The Truth About Fanfics

#2

Your main character is TOO normal

(So I'm not gonna read)

He or she isn't special any way. They're not orphans, they're not abused, their parents aren't stupid/uncaring/too busy, they weren't adopted, or they're not super popular, yet not total nerds either. They're your girl next door, run of the mill girl whose picture isn't an ulzaang. She's just an average girl, whose PB by choice is neither an actress, actor, Ulzzang, model or beauty queen/king. They're... AVERAGE.

Soooo. I'm not interested.

When people read fanfics, they want to read about something which is different, something which will never happen to them - and they know it will never happen to them, so they read about these situations to imagine it, smile about it and see how these situations would be played out. They want super pretty girls, hot boys, nerdy girls and geeky guys, all of who, have some sort of turbulent past or strange personality defect.

Something, ANYTHING.

Because reading about an average person, who could pretty much represent any of us, is quite boring. We want to put ourselves in the shoes of people who we'll never be, who have lived experiences we might never have. We want variety, we want some sort of dramatic thing in their past that we KNOW will effect them. We don't want ordinary, because ordinary is our everyday lives.

However, sometimes plain Jane's aren't all THAT bad. Ignoring your boring character for a moment, what I want to know is what your going to do to make her come alive as a person. Some sort of plot event? Another character? Something mystical or magical? Give us SOMETHING, because if you don't make your plain Jane interesting - AND FAST, we don't want to read.

If your character seems PLAIN, nobody will read.

Whats your opinions on characters that are just plain janes?

List of plain janes that WORK their ordinariness.

Anime&Manga
- Sunako Nakahara from Wallflower

Film
- Penny from The Rescuers .
- Elizabeth Abbot from The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is described as plain as paper.
- Wendy Torrence in The Shining.

Literature
- Jane Eyre: She describes HERSELF as unattractive, and so does preeeetty much every other character who talks of her.
- Pride and Prejudice: Mary Bennet, a poor little girl, is the only one plain among her very attractive sisters who are all reputed beauties. She strives to gain as many accomplishments as possible and reads a plays the piano all the time. However, it's also implied she's not that smart either.

Chapter 3: It's really weird but I agree with all if the points you're making. ESPECIALLY the second person fics. There are way to many at it saddens me because there are loads of amazing first and third person fics out there which aren't getting noticed. To be honest I don't know why second person fics get all the love from. But I personally stay way away from them

Hua I love these. You actually make some valid points that I think about sometimes when I see others fics. Maybe we're just a judgemental race... We need :(

Chapter 5: Thank you all for your comments :-)

Chapter 4: I tend to have a good length and update pretty fast according to my readers.
So, I don't really know. But personally, I'd chose length over update.
But I have to agree that it having to wait too long for an update.
Still, I understand what you mean. And that just brings me back to most of AFF's users are either in high school or middle school.
Granted there are some great writers still in high school.
Either way, this is how I've come to see things on AFF.

Chapter 4: Length over update but not if that means waiting a month between chapters. You should add a chapter about that. Some stories update so slow I forget what the last chapter was about and don't care about the story anymore so if a see a story that rarely updates I don't even bother.
I try hitting the 3000 word mark in every chapter and my last finished story was 100 chapters long.. I write how I want and are just appreciating the people who like it.
You got great points not only with this chap but the others as well.

Chapter 3: Yes! I completely agree.
Personally I hate second person stories!
Since they lack depth.
I've attempted writing one, and personally, I abandoned the project.
Even going to read them, it's rather annoying.
But still, I test them out everyday.
I still go to read them to see if I could find at least ONE good second person story I can enjoy.
You're not alone here.

Chapter 2: Again you make a great point here.
When writing the first story to my series "floWER" I've noticed my main character is a bit plane.
But not many readers will notice this right from the beginning.
Because even though she's pretty ordinary, the things that happen to her aren't.
So in that way the reader can related.
You make valid points.
Can't wait to see what else you have to say.
