In Over Our Heads

ROOTS

Rabi sat in her bed, ruffling her hair as she stared hard at her laptop screen. She stayed up all night trying to figure out when was the best time to fly to Japan. She couldn't forget the fact that they were idols, and airports were always crawling with fans. If someone spotted them traveling in such a huge group,  pictures would no doubt show up on the internet, and their managers would find them. Everyone in the group promised not to take any phone calls from their managers or group members who were back home while they were working this case. They would try their best to stay under the radar.

Rabi scrolled through the dates and times she saw listed on the screen and tried to calculate the best time to travel. Without any progress, she became frustrated and slammed her laptop shut. The noise jolted Jongin from his sleep. He turned to find Rabi ruffling her hair. His eyes then went to the clock on the night stand. "What are you still doing up?" His voice was husky as he mumbled. Rabi faced him.

"Did I wake you up?" she asked, her brows pulling together.

"Yeah." He admitted. Once he noticed the laptop on the bed, he grabbed it and placed it on the floor beside him. "That's not healthy." He scolded her in a calm voice. "You need to rest." She didn't respond, she just sighed and ruffled her hair again. She was very tired, and her eyelids were beginning to lose the battle against gravity. But she didn't want to sleep. For the past week she had the same recurring dream.

It would always begin with her standing in the middle of nothing. Blackness all around her. All would be silent, for a moment, before she would hear the voice of her father. He would just repeat her name in a mantra, each time getting louder. Eventually it would turn into a yell that would ring against Rabi's ear drums. Each time she would awake in a cold sweat. Jongin sighed and pulled her into his arms.

"Don't worry," he affirmed her. "I'll be here the entire time." Rabi let out a small sigh of relief as their bodies touched, and she felt the warm tingle of his skin against hers. Jongin didn't like to sleep with clothes on, and Rabi didn't mind. She wore one of his shirts, the smell bringing comfort to her. She pressed her body to his and tangled her legs with his. Jongin enjoyed being with her like this. Something about the night time and being in bed made Rabi seem more vulnerable, frail. He wanted to keep her close at all times, making sure nothing would get to her.

Unless she would be crying or upset, Rabi would never let Jongin hold her this way in public. She's tried public displays of affections before, and that brought her nothing but bad karma. She became very strict with Jongin about even holding hands together in public. It hurt Jongin in some ways, at times he felt as if maybe she didn't care about him the same way he did about her. Or worse, that she may still have feelings for Taemin. But all of his worries faded when they were alone, and she knew no such thing as "personal space."

"You smell like chocolate." She mumbled against his chest. Her lips brushing against his skin sent a shiver down his spine.

"I do?" he played in her hair. Lightly untangling the knots with his fingers. "Is that a bad thing?"

"No. I love chocolate."

"I love you." He said, looking down at her. She met his gaze, only for a moment before she began to drift to sleep.

"I love you back." She said, barely above a whisper. Jongin pecked her forehead and let himself fall to sleep. Being sure not to lose his grip around her. The two awoke the next morning to a loud beeping sound coming from the outside the room. Hana's screams could be hear. Rabi's eyes peeled open, then snapped wide when she noticed the light blanked of smoke crawling over he ceiling. She hopped up and ran out of her room downstairs. The smoke was thicker there, and began to fill her lungs.

"WAKE THE OTHERS!" Hana screamed at her when they met eyes. She was attempting to put out the fire that seemed to be coming from the kitchen. Only the tiny fire extinguisher was not much help in her feats. Rabi darted back upstairs and banged on the doors to her guest room and father's room where she let the others sleep. She yelled and screamed for everyone to grab their belongings and get out of the house.

The rest of the group slowly began to become aware to the now thickening cloud of smoke that was beginning to invade the second story. The guys all ordered for the girls to leave immediately. Grabbing what ever they could. When Rabi ran back downstairs she frantically searched for the second extinguisher. Helping Hana to try to tame the fire that had invaded the kitchen. Yixing grabbed a towel from the bathroom, soaking it in the water before joining the girls. He dared to get closer to the fire, beating stray flames with the damp towel.

Once outside, Narcisa had made the call to the fire department. Lucky for Rabi, it was not far from her house. Still, it took the truck over twenty minutes to get there. By the time they arrived and was able to put out the flames, the kitchen and a third of the dining area was already blackened and charred. When being questioned, Hana admitted to accidentally starting the fire when trying to make breakfast for the group.

It took about four hours, and a crowd had accumulated outside the house, but the fire squad had done what they needed to do, and was back off to the station. Leaving the group of idols to themselves. The bunch all rested in the living room, practically half as they each still had their night clothes on.

"Guys," Hana spoke. "Things are getting serious."

"Yeah, no kidding, you almost killed  us." The response came from Rabi. It was abnormally cold, being addressed to her maknae, but she couldn't mask the annoyance in her voice. The girl almost turned the fifteen of them into charred ashes.

"That wasn't me." The young girl snapped back, not liking the tone her unni used with her.

Yixing looked at her. "But you told the police-"

"I know what I told the police, but it was a lie." Rabi turned to the girl.

"Then how did the fire start?" She asked, still not believing the girl didn't have a hand in starting the fire.

"It's true, I came downstairs to make breakfast for everyone, but when I got to the kitchen there was a man there."

"A man?"

Hana nodded. "He was pouring gasoline on the oven top. Before I could stop him, he struck a match and left out the back door." Rabi stood from her seat.

"You're telling me some stranger  tried to set my house on fire? Hana, that's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard!"

"Would I make that up? Seriously unni, after finding that the same poison you were attacked with was used to kill your father, you think a man trying to set this house on fire is ridiculous?" The two girls stared at each other. Hana had a point.

"Guys... this is big." Kibum said after the silent pause lasted too long. "Someone's out to get Rabi specifically. But why?" No one had an answer to that.

"Everyone, get dressed." Rabi said in a demanding tone. "We need to get out of here. Chanyeol, check to see if you can find a flight time when there is the least about of human traffic. Then book us a flight to Japan around that time."

"Consider it done." He said retrieving his laptop from his bag.

"Myungsoo, contact your friend, let him know we're coming. We'll need a place to stay too. If you could figure that out, that would be great. After something like this, I think it's best if we stay away from any hotels. Small Inns, motels, and bed and breakfast places are the best options for us."

He nodded, and pulled out his cell phone.

"In the mean time, we need a place to stay, Narcisa?" She turned to her friend.

"I'm already ahead of you. Don't worry, I have my own place."

Within minutes, the group was up and moving, following Rabi's orders. To her surprise, they worked extremely well. Chanyeol was able to book them all flights to Tokyo. There they would take the train to Osaka where Myungsoo's friend lived. There was also a small Inn close to where he lived, so the group would be able to resign there. Hana worked on aliases they would all go by while staying at the Inn. They didn't want to book any rooms under their real names. After this attack on Rabi's home, the group couldn't be too careful.

They waited in Narcisa's apartment flat until it was time for them to leave. They took Narcisa's, Myungsoo's and the rental car to the airport. Chanyeol had done a great job in picking a departure time. The place was practically empty, and the idols were able to roam around with little effort to their disguises. Not long after, the group was on the plane heading to Tokyo.

As they sat in their seats, Minho couldn't help the feeling of unease he was getting. Kris eyed him as the idol constantly shifted in his seat.

"You do know, there's a bathroom in the back." he joked. Minho chuckled lightly and hit the man's arm.

"It's not like that." Minho said, stealing a glance down the isle. He took in the rest of the group in the three seconds he allowed himself to peek. Making sure they were all there. It was easy to keep them in his line of sight, since he and Kris took the seats furthers to the back.

"Fear of flying?" Kris asked.

"No. I get this feeling that we're being watched... followed." Kris sat up in his seat, now feeling concerned as well. "I've had this feeling since we left Narcisa-ssi's place to come here." Kris hadn't said anything, but he felt the same way as well. But nothing seemed to go wrong on their way to the airport or when boarding the plane, so he didn't say anything as to not alarm the group.

"Just keep your eyes pealed." Kris said. Minho nodded and took another glance down the isle. Hana stood and made her way to the back.

"What's wrong?" Minho asked her when she reached his seat.

"Nothing. I just have to use the bathroom. And I wanted to make sure you two were okay."

"We're fine." Minho said to the girl with a warm smile. She was beginning to warm up to him again. After his confession, she became distant and awkward around him, and Minho had begun to wonder if telling her how he felt was such a good idea. He was glad she started to treat him the way she used to. He reminded himself to not mention or show his true feelings around her. He liked it much better when she was talking and smiling with him like now.

She nodded to him and held out her lollipop. It was half dissolved, since it had been in since they boarded the plane. "I don't want it." She said. He let out a soft chuckle and took it, popping it into his mouth.

"Someone has a crush." Kris teased when the girl finally walked off. Minho punched his arm, harder than when he did the first time. "Ouch! Why so hard?" They enjoyed the light laughter between the two of them. But only for a moment before something caught their attention. They didn't look up to get his features, but a man made his way to the back of the plane, to where Hana had just walked off to. "Did she come out of the bathroom yet?" Kris asked, looking over at Minho.

"No." He said, stealing a quick glance to the back. He watched the tall figure make it's way behind the curtains where the bathroom door was located.

"Give it a few seconds, if he sees that it's occupied he should come back." Minho nodded,  and they waited for the man to come back. but he never did. Minho began to to stand, but Kris stopped him. "I got it." He said, making his way past Minho and to the back of the plane. He peaked behind the curtain, and immediately he became alarmed when he saw that the bathroom door was forced open.
