The Field Trip

Polaroids and Other Things

“Hey Lulu, did ya hear about the field trip we’re gonna have with the juniors this Saturday?”  Xiumin asked as he sat on a bench and opened his lunchbox.

“Oh, nope,” Luhan responded a bit dejectedly and then plopped on the bench across Xiumin, still worn-out from the overwhelming History class he was in previously. “What about it?”

“The teachers said we’re gonna go to the beach this Saturday to do some science experiment.” Xiumin informed in reply as he took a bite off his sandwich, “Also, we’re gonna be grouped up with some guys from our class, and then we’ll also be grouped up with some juniors too.”

“Oh! That means I can use my Polaroid to take pictures when we’re at the beach.”

“Psh, I bet you just wanna take pictures of hot guys or whatever,” Xiumin playfully laughed.

Luhan rolled his eyes in reply as if he was offended. “I’m like, one hundred percent sure my parents didn’t buy me a Polaroid camera to be that.

“Hey did you guys hear? We’re going to the beach this weekend!” Tao squealed in joy, as he strolled toward the benches with Kris following behind him. The two nodded in agreement while Kris just laughed at how giddy Tao was because of the news.

Kris pecked Tao on the cheek then sat down next to Luhan, who then scooted to the side of the bench to make space for three of them and their lunches.

**

All the students were chipper when they arrived. They were fortunate enough to be blessed with perfect weather that day. Not a single cloud could be seen and the sun shined brightly, causing the powdery-white sand to look as if it was shining. The water was crystal clear and the waves crashing on shore were gentle. Numerous palm trees hovered over the heads of the students and teachers as they excitedly piled out of the buses. One could see the numerous huts and bars dotting across the shoreline. It literally looked like a Windows screensaver.

“Oh my God, the view is amazing, guys!” Luhan exclaimed as he stepped outside the bus.

“Hey! Don’t forget your sunblock!” Kris squawked as he tried to chase after an excited Tao who ran out of the bus. He was carrying a bright yellow duffel bag containing both his and Tao’s belongings in one hand and a bottle of sun block in the other.

Xiumin followed shortly and noticed a group of students forming in the distance. “Hey guys they’re giving out the group listings right now! Come on!”

The four of them then proceeded to walk to the students and teachers congregating near one of the huts.

I wonder who I’ll get. Luhan thought to himself.

**

“Hey, my name’s Jongin! I’m going to be your group mate!”

Jongin held out a hand in front of Luhan.

This guy. Luhan thought. Oh my god.

Luhan’s mouth gaped slightly at the guy infront of him. Jongin, to Luhan was incredibly handsome. His features were soft,  bearing almost a childlike quality but he exuded manliness at the same time. His skin was of a deep golden caramel color, and his dark-brown hair framed his face perfectly.

           Damnit, this is unfair.

Luhan shook Jongin’s hand. He hoped that Jongin wouldn’t notice how his hands were slightly trembling or how his palms were starting to sweat.

           “I, uh, my name’s Luhan.”

“You’re a senior right? ‘Cause I’m a junior so that means you’re my hyung!” Jongin awed.

Jongin’s infectious mood washed off some of Luhan’s nervousness.

“Yeah, I guess so. Let’s meet up with our other group mates so we can start on our assigned task.”

Jongin nodded in agreement and walked towards where the other students were. As soon as he was out of hearing distance, Xiumin sneakily approached Luhan.

“Looks like someone has a boy-toy!” Xiumin giggled.

Luhan coughed a bit too violently in response and slapped Xiumin in the arm. “Oh my God, shut up!” Luhan blabbered and pushed Xiumin off.

**

Before the students went off to start with their experiments, the teachers announced that pictures were required, so Luhan brought out his Polaroid as his group was setting up for the experiment. Jongin noticed this and his eyebrows shot up in curiosity.

“Is that a Polaroid, Luhan-hyung? Oh my God, do you mind if you take a picture for me please?” Jongin begged. Luhan couldn’t help but notice how Jongin was unconsciously giving him pleading eyes and his lips were forming a slight pout.

           “Um, sure I gues-

“Awesome! Okay, okay, hold on let’s ask someone to take a picture of us!”

“What?” Wouldn’t he have wanted to take a picture of himself and his friends? He thought to himself.

Jongin managed to find someone who was willing to take a picture of them. Before Luhan knew it, Jongin placed his arm on his shoulders and did a peace sign at the camera. Luhan flustered only very slightly and smiled at the camera.

The flash went off and a blank Polaroid film starting appearing out of the bottom of the camera. When Luhan got back his camera, he turned his attention to Jongin who was now flipping the Polaroid film repeatedly with a confused look.

“Hyung, isn’t there supposed to be a picture?” Jongin asked as he meticulously examined the Polaroid film. His brows furrowed in confusion.

Luhan laughed and gently took the photo from his hold. “You have to wait for it to develop first. It’ll take like a couple of minutes or so.”

Jongin’s mouth formed an ‘o’ shape. “Oh, I see!” Jongin said. “Um, Luhan-hyung, do you mind if I can keep it?”

Luhan nodded and was met with a grin by Jongin that only made Luhan flustered. He quickly looked away and fiddled with his camera.

**

Luhan and Jongin’s group mates, luckily, were very efficient so they were able to finish relatively early. Xiumin, Kris, and Tao finished shortly after too so all four of them were rewarded with free time for the rest of the day. As the four of them were eating their packed lunches in one of the huts, he felt a light tap on his shoulder and turned around to see Jongin.

Kris and Tao smiled politely while Xiumin quirked an eyebrow at the new visitor. Luhan had the expression of a fish as he stared at Jongin.

“Hyung, I was wondering if we could, um, take a picture with your Polaroid again. Only if that’d be okay with you?” Jongin asked shyly. Luhan could feel the pairs of eyes boring holes through the back of his head.

“Huh? Didn’t we already take a picture awhile ago?”

“I just felt guilty that you didn’t get a picture too.” Jongin said a bit nervously. Luhan saw that he was staring at his feet.

“Hey Lulu, I’ll take a picture of you guys. Gimme your camera.” Xiumin offered. Luhan saw a mischievous glint in his eye and he was sure that his friend wasn’t up to good.

Jongin sat next to Luhan. Luhan scowled at the suggestive grins being thrown at him but quickly reverted to smiling when Jongin placed his arm over his shoulders to pose for the camera.

“Hey, can you guys move a bit closer? You guys don’t fit the viewfinder.”

Luhan narrowed his eyes at the lens, knowing that Xiumin could see him through the camera, and was that Tao giggling in the back?

Jongin then proceeded to lean onto him and scooted his chair even closer to Luhan to the point that their thighs were brushing against each other.

“A little bit more closer, you two!”

Their cheeks were brushing against each other now. Luhan could practically feel Jongin smiling beside him.

           “Just a little bit more!”

Luhan kicked Xiumin in the shin and the latter winced in pain. “Ow--Alright you guys are good!”

Luhan couldn’t help but blush at how close he and Jongin were.

The flash went off and Xiumin got the newly processed photo. Luhan immediately moved away from Jongin in embarrassment.

“Alright hyung! The picture’s yours! See you!” Jongin beamed happily and stood up. He bowed in gratitude then walked off to his friends at another hut.

“Oh my god! You two are so adorable. You guys are like a couple!” Tao exclaimed.

Luhan flushed a deep tomato red and Kris half-assedly shushed him. Xiumin was fussing over the photo while Kris and Tao were making cooing sounds at the photo. Dear God, save me from this PDA, Luhan prayed. Finally, Kris shoved the photo in front of his face to save him from any further embarassment.

“Here,” Kris said. Luhan snatched the photo and placed it inside his wallet.

“To be clear, I don’t like him! Don’t get any ideas!” Luhan snapped, attempting to appear threatening.

“Whatever, Lulu.” Xiumin snorted in amusement.

On a scale of one to ten, with ten being done, he was at a high 20.

**

Luhan looked at the photo at least fifty times before falling asleep.
