Chapter 10 -- The First Real Clue
Monsters: The MousetrapHana headed for that place in Myeongdong again, now that she had fresh eyes, maybe she could figure out something. The area was bustling and there were numerous people walking out and about.
She looked around the shops and she saw a place where there was possible security footage. Gayoon had been taken near a store that had a camera outside to be aware of shoplifters. The store had a lot of cute clothes and it seemed likely that they would get a lot of people who would try to get the small earrings or little trinkets.
She walked inside the store and walked towards the woman inside, “Hello. I noticed you have security cameras, have you heard about the missing girl?” Hana asked her.
“You mean the one from yesterday? Hasn’t she just run off with another guy?” The woman answered skeptically.
Hana gave her a curt smile, “We don’t actually know what’s happened, but I would like to see your security footage if you don’t mind. Your camera was facing in the direction of where she was taken.” She said.
The woman shrugged her shoulders, “I doubt there’s anything useful on there. Kids these days.” She muttered to herself, shaking her head. “You can have a look if you want.” The woman pointed to the back where she kept all the tapes.
“How do you organize them?” Hana asked her, looking at the stack.
“By date. The tape on top is the one from yesterday.” The woman answered dismissively, ignoring her as a customer walked in.
“Thank you.” Hana took the top tape and popped it into the VCR. She fast forwarded it until she got to the time that Yoseob and Gayoon were outside of the store. She pressed play and watched as Yoseob went around to unlock the car doors.
He had his eyes down for a minute as Gayoon’s eyes roamed around, she turned towards the alley and lifted her head slightly. Hana wondered what that kind of body language meant but she had no time to decipher it as she watched Gayoon walk away from her own boyfriend of her own free will.
Yoseob looked up to find his girlfriend gone and out of sight. She watched him yell and scream for her and he even walked down the alley to see if she was there, but no luck. She pressed rewind as she played it again but slowed down.
Gayoon really did walk away on her own, which is what the other girls must have done. She had some sort of idea now as to why the girls weren’t reported as “kidnapped” because there was no evidence that someone had taken them and ran. Nor had anyone drove up in a van and tossed them in.
It was simply the fact that they had been distracted by something, she had to keep this and get back to her wall at the apartment so she could decipher Gayoon’s body language in the tape. She walked back outside, tape in hand and saw that the store owner was busy with someone.
She figured since no one shoplifted that day the owner wouldn’t miss the tape, but just in case, she decided to leave a note on the door for her. ‘Taking the tape from yesterday. Thank you for your help.’ And with that, she went back to her apartment.
She finally had something tangible in her grasp, she could feel it. She could get closer to the answers if she could only figure out what happened to Gayoon to make her go into that alleyway. She popped the videotape into her player which converted it to a DVD. Hana took a look in her refrigerator and noticed that Seungyub had managed to buy her some soda and left it for her. She took out a can before sitting down at her table.
She had the perfect view of the video as well as her wall, she could compare her notes while watching the video play out. Gayoon’s head tilt towards the sky had something to do with her notes, she just knew it. She watched it over and over again but she couldn’t figure it out.
She sighed, downing her can of soda before walking over to collapse on her couch, maybe she needed to get some shuteye or something. A knock at her door made her think otherwise, she checked who was and saw Seungyub on the other side.
She opened the door for him, and he came bearing gifts. “Hungry, noona?” He asked her, holding up a bag from the pojangmacha downstairs. She smiled at him as she inhaled the smell of the food.
“Ddeukbokki?” She asked him, she sniffed the air again before her eyes widened. She ran away from him and towards her wall.
“What are you doing?” Seungyub asked her as he walked calmly to the table, setting up the food.
“A store in Myeongdong had security footage from last night and Gayoon walked away on her own after lifting her head up and this whole time I couldn’t figure out why but I know now.” Hana said in one breath as her fingers grazed her post-it with the scents.
She turned to him, “Oh really? And what reason is that?” He asked her, watching the footage as well.
“It is connected to the smells, she was inhaling a smell like I did just now when you brought the food. She recognized lilacs in the air and followed it.” Hana explained, playing back Gayoon’s action.
Seungyub clapped slowly, “Finally, you’ve got somewhere. Now what are you going to do?” He asked her.
She smirked, “First I’m going to go eat, and then head to the library and do some research. Just because i know it’s the smells now doesn’t mean anything. The smells don’t connect each other.”
“Yeah, true.” Seungyub said, handing her a toothpick and chopsticks for the japchae and kimbap he bought as well. “But at least you answered one of your questions, their favorite smells would lead them to whoever is kidnapping them.”
Hana smiled as he reminded her of her small victory. “You’re right and for that, I will celebrate."
