To Lose a Thing
Description
“What was lost was lost. There was no retrieving it, however you schemed, no returning to how things were, no going back.”
–Haruki Murakami, Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World
Foreword
You lose car keys and pencils
You lose houses and homes
You lose memories of places
and memories of faces
You lose dignity and honour
You lose your direction
You lose control over your life
You lose hope in the face of strife
Perhaps you have done all these
or perhaps just a few
or perhaps none at all
Yet at the end of the day,
each and every one of us
shall lose a thing:
You lose the race against death and time
for this competition
