Santa's Broken Sleigh

Jinki ran towards what was left of the capsized sleigh and collapsed to his knees, his hands shaking. He heaved away the larger pieces of wood from the wreck to reveal Jonghyun, sprawled on the icy road and groaning in pain. His coat and pants had been slashed and torn at by the sharp nails, his beard was dangling loosely from his chin, and his Santa hat drooped sadly over his face at a stupid angle. Even his boots had been tattered and ruined, with one falling off to reveal his pink socks underneath. Jinki stared in shock at the mangled, shameful mess of a human, before grabbing his wrists and pulling him from the wreck.

"Uuuuugghhh..."

"J-Jonghyun?"

"Hyung...? Am I...d-dead...?"

"What? Dead? Jonghyun, are you okay?"

Jinki pulled the younger to the curb and lay him down in the cold snow, bending over his weak body and placing his palms on the latter's forehead.

"Do you feel dizzy?"

Jonghyun slowly lifted his eyelids and squinted into the palely lit night, focusing his eyes on the face above him. When his eyes adjusted to the dark light and Jinki's face began to form clearly, he suddenly let out a dazed chuckle, leaving the elder puzzled and concerned.

"I'm really dead, Minho-ah, did you see the crash? Or did you go home? I'm in heaven now...and an angel's here to save me..."

Jinki's eyes widened at the comment and felt a pink hue spreading across his cheeks. He prodded Jonghyun on the side of his face gently, growing nervous.

"Jonghyun-ah...I'm n-not an a-angel, Jonghyun...it's me...it's Jinki..."

Immediately Jonghyun's eyes snapped wide open, and he stared at the elder in utter mortification.

"H-hyung?!"

Jinki chuckled slightly and scooped his arms under Jonghyun's shoulders, lifting him into a sitting position in the snow.

"Are you feeling better now? That was a pretty bad crash. You started hallucinating."

Jonghyun felt immense heat rushing to his cheeks despite the freezing cold around him, and he looked at his feet in embarrassment.

"I wasn't hallucinating..." he murmured, humiliation rushing over him.

Jinki stared at Jonghyun in shock, before realising what he meant and felt his heart skip a beat.

He thinks...I'm an angel?

"Uuh...umm...are you...f-feeling alright?" Jinki repeated, trying to break the awkward silence. Jonghyun nodded slowly, biting back tears.

I've just embarrassed myself in front of Jinki. The whole plan failed. Everything failed.
I'm such a loser...

"Jonghyun-ah..." Jinki said quietly. He reached out and cupped Jonghyun's cheeks, lifting up his head so they could face each other. Jonghyun felt a tear slip from his eyes, and Jinki was startled at the sudden drop of saline and quickly wiped it away with his thumb.

"Jonghyun, what's wrong?!"

He didn't reply.

"Jonghyun...Jonghyun, what is all of this?"

They both turned to face the heap of broken wood lying pathetically in the middle of the street, dimly lit by the streetlights surrounding it. Jonghyun sighed in defeat and slumped his shoulders, feeling stupid for ignoring Minho's warnings of the safety dangers he was facing. He was thankful he didn't hurt himself, or Jinki...but everything had failed so miserably, he couldn't help feeling crestfallen that all of his efforts had completely gone to waste.

"I wanted to give you a Christmas gift..." he whispered.

Jinki looked at Jonghyun in astonishment, examining his ruined Santa outfit, then the broken sleigh, then his outfit again.

And suddenly, it all made sense.

"I…I built the sleigh with Minho…we built it, and painted it, and decorated it together,” Jonghyun said tearfully, “and I bought the Santa costume…thinking I could come down in the sleigh dressed up and Santa…and give you gifts…as a s-special Christmas surprise…."

Jonghyun trailed off, dejected, kicking up the snow with his heels and sighing again.

"I’m sorry, Jinki-hyung. I messed up. I’m sorry for waking you up because of my stupid idea, thinking that this would actually go well and I’d be able to–"

Jonghyun stopped short, slapping his hand over his mouth. Jinki looked at him, puzzled, before smiling curiously.

"You'd be able to what? What? What?! Don't ignore me, Jonghyun! Tell me! Come on! Tell me! Tell me, tell me, tell me, tell me, tell me, tell me, tell me, tell m–"

"It doesn't matter anymore!" Jonghyun cried, pushing his hands over his ears.

"Yes it does! Come on, Jonghyun, don't lose the Christmas spirit! You can't let all your efforts go to waste!"

"I wanted to give you a Christmas gift, okay? That's it!"

Jinki pouted sadly and huffed in frustration.

"I know there's something else, Jonghyun-ah..."

"Just...just forget it."

"But...but Jonghyun–"

"I said forget it!"

Jonghyun placed his hands down into the snow and pushed himself up on his feet, before dusting the snow off his pants and walking over to the broken sleigh. Jinki stared at him as he walked away, and his eyes widened at the younger bent down and began picking up the broken pieces.

"What are you doing?"

"I'm cleaning up the mess I made. Go to bed, Jinki. Just go. I screwed up. Forget it."

"Let me help you!"

Jinki jumped up to his feet happily and ran over to Jonghyun, immediately bending down and scooping fragments of wood into his arms.

"Stop it, Jinki! Just go to sleep!" Jonghyun cried, turning away and gently shoving Jinki in the chest in an attempt to send him away.
He didn't expect to hear the loud clatter of wood as Jinki's arms fell to his side limply, the wood falling from his arms.

"J-Jonghyun..."

"W-wha?"

Jonghyun turned around and stared at him in surprise. Jinki's mouth was wide open, his small eyes abnormally large, as he swivelled his pupils from left to right, staring at his surroundings.

"Jinki?"

"J-J-Jonghyun…Jonghyun...I smell…c-chicken…"

Jonghyun facepalmed, then sighed.

"Yeah, that was one of your Christmas gifts..."

"What!?"

The younger bit his lip shamefully, before dropping the wood in his arms and grabbing Jinki's hand.

"Over here..."

Jinki felt his cheeks reddening as he felt Jonghyun's warm hand slide into his, but the smell of hot, crispy chicken wafting past his nose was enough to help him overcome his shyness and follow Jonghyun calmly.

Jonghyun walked around the wreck before he found a large gap between the fallen planks of wood, and kneeled down in front of it, Jinki following suit. He let go of the elder's hand and reached into the gap, squinting into the darkness, and Jinki nibbled on his lip as the cool midnight air rushed into his palms where the latter's hand had been. He watched Jonghyun fumble about and grunt as he heaved away bits of the mangled sleigh, before sighing and tugging on something inside.

"It's – stuck — mphf!"

With each tug, more and more of the red material was revealed, and the smell of chicken got stronger and stronger. Jinki slowly began piecing the events and what he was seeing together, and when Jonghyun had pulled out the whole sack and they were completely envelope int he tasty, savoury smell of fried chicken, Jinki understood.

"Wait a second...that's meant to be Santa's bag of gifts, right?"

"Yeah."

"And...you're dressed up as Santa..."

"...so I could deliver your gifts."

Jonghyun stared at the bag in woe for a few long moments, before leaning back and turning his head away, his eyes squeezed shut, and turning the sack upside down, letting the contents fall out.

Boxes.

So many boxes.

Boxes...boxes of...

"CHICKEN?!"

Jonghyun opened his eyes and turned to face the pile in front of him, and his eyes goggled out in shock.

"It wasn't ruined from the crash...?!"

"You bought me chicken?!"

Jonghyun looked up at Jinki and couldn't help but smile sheepishly at the mix of disbelief and joy the look on his face showed.

"Eh...well...yeah...I-I thought you mig–"

Jonghyun was cut off when he suddenly felt a huge weight being thrown at him, knocking him back and sending him tumbling down into the ice. He felt arms wrapping tightly around his neck and he gasped as a mass of brown hair smothered his face, as Jinki squealed into his ear childishly and rolled them around in the bitter cold.

"YOU BOUGHT ME CHICKEN?!" he cried, squeezing Jonghyun so tightly the younger couldn't even manage to choke out a cry of shock.

"Ngh...nngghhh!"

Jonghyun scrambled about until he managed to shove his hands under Jinki's chest and push him away, leaving enough space between them for him to gasp for breath.

"Jinki...I can't...breathe...!"

Jinki immediately rolled over once more so Jonghyun was lying on top of him, his arms moving down to wrap tightly around the younger's waist. Jonghyun felt his breath hitch as his face halted inches away from Jinki's angelic features, the elder's arms pulling him close. He could feel his cheeks heating up once more as they watched each other's eyes twinkle in the streetlights, their hot breaths upon another's.

"You bought me all that for Christmas?"

A small smile lingered on Jinki's soft, pink lips, his eyes curving up into delicate crescent moons as he watched the younger gulp and lie stiffly on his torso, nervous.
Jinki was nervous too, no doubt.
But the feeling of them, alone, together, with his arms wrapped around Jonghyun...he had longed for moments like this for so long, and now that they were finally there...he didn't want to let his nerves take over him, and break the precious moment.

Jonghyun felt his heart racing faster and faster, unable to tear his eyes from Jinki's.

He looks so beautiful in the moonlight. He's like an angel; perfect in every way.

Jonghyun could see Jinki's lips twitch in amusement as he forced a breath down his throat, his hands beginning to shake.

The lips I want to kiss so badly right now...

"This is the best Christmas gift ever," Jinki whispered, reaching up and brushing Jonghyun's hair from his eyes. The younger felt his heart skip a beat at the warm contact of Jinki's fingers, and the urge to let their lips attach grew stronger than ever.

"Yeah," Jonghyun breathed, "and it's about to get better."

And with that, Jonghyun leaned down, his fingers slowly creeping up Jinki's face and entangling themselves in his hair, and he finally kissed the lips he'd been so desperate for, for so many years of his life.

The feeling of another's lips on their own was like touching silk; it was soft, gentle, and so satisfying. Their eyes gently fluttered shut as they finally, finally kissed one another, all the love they'd been bottling up pouring out through it, feeling as if they were floating on feathery-soft clouds.

It was more than amazing.

It was breathtaking.

Slowly, Jonghyun leaned back, his lips parting from Jinki's, his breath shallow and his eyes still shut as he savoured the taste of Jinki's sweet lips. Jinki opened his eyes and reached up to trace Jonghyun's jawline, feeling himself smile despite the overwhelming shock soaring through him.

"Jonghyun-ah..."

Hearing Jinki's voice was like a slap in the face – he suddenly jolted out of dreamland and plummeted off Cloud Nine, as he felt guilt, horror and shock crash over him all at once. He gasped and felt himself weaken, before completely tumbling off Jinki's chest and crashing into the ice below him.

"Jonghyun?"

"Hyung...hyung, I'm s-so, so sorry...I'm...I d-don't...no...I'm s-sorry...just...just f-forget this ever happened–"

"Why would I want to forget that?"

Jonghyun gulped and turned his head to face Jinki, who had rolled onto his side and was staring at the younger with a smile tugging at his lips, and eyes filled with such love it was frightening.

"I–"

"Do you know how long I've been waiting for you to do that?"

Jonghyun gaped at him, feeling his heart skip at the unexpected comment. Jinki laughed gently at the younger's shocked expression and seized him, hugging him tightly on the ice-covered road, completely forgetting how cold he was before. He smiled in amusement at the frozen look of surprise on Jonghyun's face, reaching up to tap his nose.

"Yah, it's rude to stare."

If it wasn't for Jinki's strong arms wrapped around Jonghyun's waist, keeping him lying on his side, the younger would have rolled over on his back and lay there all night in pure shock.

"Do you...really...?"

"Do I what?" Jinki teased.

"L…l…l…do you l…uh…"

Jinki smiled at Jonghyun's shyness and leaned forward to gently press his lips on Jonghyun's once more.

"I love you," he whispered, closing his eyes to enjoy the sweet moment.

Slowly Jonghyun felt his heart rate stabilize and he soon found his fingers entwining themselves through Jinki's floppy hair once more as he kissed back, feeling both relief and victory washing over him.

He'd done it.

It hadn't gone exactly to plan – more accurately, his plan had completely failed – but he had achieved what he wanted.

Making Jinki happy.

And his.

And that's all he needed.

Thanks, Minho...

Suddenly, Jonghyun felt Jinki shiver under his fingertips, and he quickly pulled from the kiss. Jinki started in surprise and cocked his head as Jonghyun looked down at his arms, his eyes widening. His arms were completely covered with goosebumps.

Jonghyun gasped, and immediately sat up, pulling Jinki with him.

"What's wrong?"

"You're cold! Let's get inside now, before you catch a cold!"

Jonghyun pulled Jinki to his feet and grabbed his hands, tugging him towards the house in front of them, determined to get Jinki into the warmth.

Stupid, stupid, stupid! There you are, all wrapped up and warm in winter clothing, kissing Jinki on a frozen road, when he’s just in a flimsy shirt! How could you have been so foolish, to not even think of him?! Stupid, stupid, stu–

"Wait!" Jinki cried, pulling away from Jonghyun. The younger turned around to face him, his mouth wide open in shock.

"Jinki, we have to get inside now–"

"But it's Christmas!"

Jinki held out his wrist in front of Jinki's eyes, Jonghyun was surprised to see he was wearing a watch, even in his pajamas. He peered into the dark light, slowly making out a few foggy numbers.

12:30 AM

"It's already twelve-thirty?!" Jonghyun gasped. Jinki grinned childishly, all hints of romance in his eyes gone.

"We've got to wait out here for Santa-hyung, Jjong! The real Santa-hyung!"

Jonghyun couldn't help but smile at Jinki's innocence and excitement, and felt himself blushing sheepishly at the last comment. But, despite his affection – and embarrassment – he felt himself grabbing Jinki's wrist once more.

"We can wait for Santa-hyung once you've come inside and put a coat on."

Jonghyun gently tugged Jinki towards the elder’s house, and this time, he was surprised to feel Jinki wasn’t resisting.

Until Jinki stepped in front of him and hugged his waist tightly, burying his face into the younger’s neck.

"I’m not cold when I’m with you," he murmured, smiling as Jonghyun’s grip on his wrist weakened.

"F-fine…"

Jinki laughed victoriously and grabbed the latter's hand, pulling him back over to the broken sleigh.

"C'mon, Jjongie! We'll sit here and wait for him! And we'll eat all the chicken you brought, too!" he chimed, plopping down in front of the wooden wreck and beaming up at the younger. Jonghyun smiled at him before sitting next to the taller figure, snuggling up against his warm chest. Jinki reached out to seize a box, opening it and smiling that it was still warm.

"You sure you're going to be able to eat...all of this?" Jonghyun asked, eyeing the huge pile of boxes in front of them. The elder nodded enthusiastically, taking out a piece and holding it in front of his nose.

"Mmm...my sweet, sweet chicken..." he whispered lovingly, gently bringing the chicken to his lips to take a bite. Jonghyun felt his heart warm at the expression of content on his lover's face, and soon enough feeling his fingers crawl to the box resting on Jinki's knee.

They sat there for a few long hours, watching the stars fade and the street light up in the dawn as they waited patiently for 'Santa'. Jonghyun had taken off his coat and wrapped it around Jinki's shoulders to warm him, and by the time they had gone through more than 5 boxes of chicken, they had slowly drifted to sleep, warm and comfortable in each other's arms. Both had a gentle smile lingering on their faces as they slipped into their peaceful slumber, the thoughts of their new lover filling their minds with happy thoughts.

It was about 6 in the morning when the gentle sound of boots crunching through the snow echoed through Jinki's street as two tall figures made their way down to Jinki's house, hand in hand.

The first thing Minho noticed was Jonghyun's sleigh, shattered and lying in a heap in the middle of the road, with two bodies sprawled next to it.

His heart froze.

"JONGHYUN!!" he screamed, releasing Taemin's hand and running towards the wreck. He screamed Jinki and Jonghyun's names as he ran towards it, crumpling on his knees next to them, enveloped in fear.

Only then he noticed they were sleeping calmly, embracing each other, empty boxes of chicken all around them.

They weren't dead.

Minho covered his mouth and sighed heavily in relief, clutching his chest.

"MINHO!! MINHO, ARE THEY OKAY?!" Taemin's voice cried from behind. Minho felt a body collapse on their knees next to him, and soon heard them moan in relief.

"My God, Minho, I thought they were dead–"

"Shh...they're sleeping..."

Minho and Taemin fell silent as they watched the two elders sleep peacefully in front of them, and Minho felt a smile spreading across his lips as Jonghyun's twitched in his sleep.

"You failed, Kim Jonghyun," he murmured, reaching out to move some stray hairs away from Jonghyun's eyes. "You failed. You broke our three week's worth of hard work and failed..."

Minho tilted his head in content as Jonghyun gently moved his head at the feeling of Minho's fingers on his skin, nestling it deeper into Jinki's shoulder.

"...but you got what you wanted. Your perfect Christmas gift...Jinki."

Suddenly, Taemin sighed glumly, folding his arms and looking at his knees. Minho looked at him in surprise, raising his eyebrows.

"I wish you'd do something like that to me..." Taemin grumbled, blowing his hair from his face. Minho laughed and rolled his eyes, standing up and holding out his hand to help Taemin to his feet.

"Come on, you," he teased, pulling the younger to his side and kissing his forehead. Taemin smiled in satisfaction, and the two began to walk back up the street, the morning sun glimmering in their faces. Minho turned around to look at Jonghyun and Jinki for the last time, sighing happily.

After so many years of hiding their feelings, they were finally together. Happy. In love.

The gentle sun illuminated then softly, making the buckles on Jonghyun's boots and Jinki's wristwatch glint in the light. It illuminated their faces, making them light up like angels.

Minho smiled, content.

"Merry Christmas, you two," he whispered, watching them for a few more lingering moments, before turning around and setting off into the snowy sunrise with Taemin, hand in hand.
