chapter two

The day went by smoothly to say the least. Everyone seemed to be paying attention during the lectures (thought that was far from true) and the hours seemed to fly by.
That is, for some students.
Students like Hara or Jandi who actually excelled in school found class interesting and took notes. Students like Jayden or Jaehyun attempted at note taking, but usually spaced out or doodled a little bit. There were students like Chaemi, who didn’t take notes, but attempted listening.
Or you could be like Xiaoyi and text in class.
It wasn’t that she didn’t pay attention -- no, she usually scrawled down something every few minutes. But who could she be texting in class when she barely knew anyone sitting around her?
Her godfather, Luhan, of course.
Xiaoyi stared up at the projector (which had notes on something about one of the World Wars) as she sent her godfather a quick text. Nearly a minute later, her phone’s light flashed. Smiling secretly, she checked the message under her desk.
From: Luhannie:
‘Hey -- Wu Xiaoyi. Aren’t you supposed to be studying?’
She smirked.
To: Luhannie:
‘Emphasis on the word supposed, Lu-Lu xD’
From: Luhannie:
‘Alright, I get it, I get it. But won’t Wufan get mad at you? ;P’
To: Luhannie:
‘What he doesn’t know won’t hurt him.’
From Luhannie:
‘Jeez, you’re almost as bad as me.’
She chuckled softly to herself and glanced at the clock. Closing her phone and discreetly dropping it into her schoolbag, she smiled -- it was two minutes till lunch. She scribbled down something about how Germany allied with Italy and waited patiently for the bell to ring.
She eagerly counted down the seconds until the shrill bell echoed throughout the classroom. Their history teacher glanced at the clock.
“Oh, there’s the bell,” she said. “Class dismissed -- check the calendars I handed out for your homework tonight!”
“Damn, who gives homework to students on their first day of school?” Chaemi voiced outloud, slinging her backpack over her shoulder.
“Tell me about it,” Xiaoyi replied, the ever present smirk on her face.
Chaemi scoffed. “I could go on and on. But for now, I have to find a table to eat my lunch at because frankly, Minwoo most likely won’t let me sit with him.”
The two walked out of the classroom together, side-by-side as Xiaoyi asked, “Do you bring or buy?”
“I usually buy,” Chaemi responded. “How ‘bout you?”
Xiaoyi smiled, holding up her plastic container. “Bring.”
Chaemi laughed a little as she saw the box. “It’s decorated with unicorns?”
The Chinese rolled her eyes. “My dad’s practically got an obsession -- don’t ask.”
“Fair enough.”
They walked in an amiable silence with a bit of small talk as they found their way to the cafeteria. The noisy and boisterous noises of conversations drowned them as they entered. Xiaoyi blinked, trying to focus.
Honestly, for a school that was known for it’s top-notch students, it looked like a zoo.
She wasn’t the only one thinking that. Not too far away, Seohyun stared at the student filled room, confused as to how ruckus they were.
“Well, this wasn’t exactly in the brochure,” Jandi chuckled beside her.
“Not at all,” Seohyun managed to smile. “But it’s not like they’re going to brag about how noisy their students are.”
“Agreed, agreed,” Jandi said, smiling to herself.
And as if the whole school new about the new homeroom (which, in fact, they did) there were two empty tables in a lonely corner of the cafeteria which nobody touched.
The whole student body felt like this class was the odd one out, the weird homeroom, and most importantly, the soon-to-be minions of the principal. If it were a normal homeroom, they probably wouldn’t have enclosed them off the way that they did, but this homeroom wasn’t normal.
Not to them.
So when Hara walked past the tables filled with students to get to an empty one, she was cast several glances that were curious, disappointed, sympathetic, or even murderous. She told herself not to care though -- after all, she came here to be no longer judged by her classmates.
“Hara!” a voice called out behind her.
She turned her head to greet Hyunri, who smiled happily with his lunch box in hand. He caught up with her, his burgundy tie flapping. Hara smiled and paused in her steps, waiting for the blonde to catch up. He ran up to her side, a bright grin on his face.
“Hi,” he said with a slight chuckle.
“Well, hi to you, too,” she laughed.
“Where are you sitting for lunch?” he asked, walking by her side.
“One of the empty tables, I guess,” she shrugged.
He chuckled. “Well, that makes sense -- after all, it’s not like anyone would save us seats.”
“True, that,” she giggled.
Together, the both of them sat down at the table that was farthest from the trash bin. They were just normally chatting about things that weren’t important when two figures entered their line of sight.
“Hi,” Jandi said to the two, smiling. “Do you two mind if we sat here?”
“Not at all,” Hara replied, her eyes bright. “You can sit here if you like. My name’s Hara, and this is Hyunri,” she spoke, gesturing to the blonde beside her. Said blonde waved happily.
“Well, I’m Seohyun and this is Jandi,” the girl said, a smile gracing her features as she sat down. “It’s nice to meet you.”
“Likewise,” Hyunri smiled. “Are you part of the new homeroom, too?”
“We are,” Jandi replied. “I came here because it was a better option than staying at my old school.”
Hara gasped. “Me, too!”
“Same here!” Seohyun and Hyunri said simultaneously, earning giggles from the whole table.
Seohyun and Jandi seated themselves with smiles, the excitement in the atmosphere replenishing.
“So, how are you guys liking it here?” Hyunri asked, his eyes bright.
“I definitely like it better than my old school,” Seohyun commented. “Well, old schools, if I might correct myself.”
“Did you move around a lot?” Hyunri asked.
“Yeah,” she sighed. “My dad got a lot of work transfers.”
“Why?”
She glanced around, almost nervous. “Don’t tell anybody but… he’s been avoiding some guy – he won’t tell me who it is, but I know he’s been running from someone.”
Jandi gasped. “Running from someone? Shouldn’t you inform the police?”
“No, they aren’t a threat -- my dad just can’t stand being around him.”
“Who is he?”
“Frankly, I’ve got no clue, but I made him promise that this would be our last move, so I’m happy,” she smiled.
“That’s great,” Hara agreed. “I transferred to this school because the other people in my old school were abusing my intellect,” she pouted.
“My school thought that all I had was intellect,” Jandi scoffed.
“I was bullied,” Hyunri piped up, with an illuminating smile. How he smiled while talking about his bullies, no one would know.
“Why?” Seohyun asked, her eyes wide. After all, how could someone bully such a sweet boy?
“Well, they were all the tough boys in my grade,” Hyunri explained. “They didn’t like me because… well, because I’m gay.”
Hara and Jandi nodded understandingly. “My parents are actually gay,” they both said.
Hyunri smiled bitterly. “It can be… difficult at times, but I’m not really that different from anyone else! I’m human, I eat, I breathe -- I’m just like any other student!”
Seohyun giggled and pat his head. “You sure are -- one of the nicest humans I’ve ever met!”
Hyunri grinned as he up that last of his juice box. His mom had been sweet enough to pack him lunch, after all. He stood up to throw it away, walking up to the nearest trashcan and tossing it in. As he turned around, however, he rammed into another person.
“Eep!” a feminine voice gasped.
Hyunri acted quickly, grabbing the other girl by her food tray and balancing her, which, he might say, was quite a feat, considering that she was actually taller than him.
“Oh, thank you,” she sighed, relief washing over her pretty features.
“No problem,” he smiled, his eyes forming crescents similar to his mom’s.
“Mina,” a boy said, coming to her side. “Are you okay?”
“I just slipped, Minwoo,” she explained. “But I’m fine thanks to -- erm, what was your name?”
“Hyunri! Hwang Hyunri!”
Minwoo out his hand. “Nice to meet you, Hyunri. I’m Han Minwoo.”
“And I’m Choi Mina.”
“Are you two friends?” Hyunri asked.
“Well, we’re not exactly friends, but we sit next to each other in class,” Minwoo said.
“That’s cool!” Hyunri smiled. “Would you two like to sit with us?” he asked, gesturing to his table.
“Sure,” Minwoo replied, following him.
The trio walked over to the lunch table as ones who were already seated looked up and smiled.
“Hi,” Hara said. “Welcome to our… uh, table.”
“Guys,” Hyunri said, “this is Minwoo and Mina. They’re in our homeroom, too!”
“That’s so cool,” Seohyun smiled as the two sat down. “Were you two friends before this, or…?”
Mina smiled shyly. “No, we sit next to each other in homeroom, and we didn’t really know anyone else, so we were trying to find our way around together.”
Minwoo nodded. “We don’t really know anyone in our homeroom, so… I guess that’s why we’ve kind of stuck with each other for now. But I’m sure we’re going to make more friends.”
Jandi grinned. “You already have! Consider this table your friends!”
Hara nodded. “Yup! We should stick together if we’re a class!”
Mina smiled at her energy. “Definitely. But… what about our other classmates?”
As soon as the shrill bell had rung, Jaehyun had packed up his bag quickly and walked across the room to throw an arm across Jayden. The other boy looked up in surprise, a grin spreading across his face as soon as he saw who it was.
“Hey,” Jayden laughed.
“Hey, yourself,” the other boy chuckled, slinging his backpack over his shoulder. “Shall we head to the cafeteria?”
“We shall,” he replied, picking up his own backpack.
The two walked out of the classroom together, talking about whatever interested them. In this case, it was about soy sauce.
“Man, you should’ve seen the look on his face!” Jaehyun laughed as they walked through the lunch line.
Jayden picked up a metal lunch tray. “Then what did he do?”
“Well, obviously, he completely ratted me out for switching his cola with soy sauce mixed with seltzer water, but I got off pretty much scot-free.”
“Nice!” Jayden laughed, giving him a high-five. “Why the seltzer water, though?”
“So it bubbled like cola!”
Jayden laughed. “You have got the best pranks ever. I can’t wait to see what you pull off in this joint.”
“Tell me about it! And the best part? These stuck up pricks will never see it coming!” he laughed as he picked up some side dishes.
As the two continued their… unique conversations, they found their way to the lonely corner of the cafeteria, where the empty tables were. Too busy to notice any other students, they just sat down by themselves, still trapped in their own web of stories.
“And that,” Jayden finished, “is why I will never ever come near a cat again.”
“But it only scratched your leg!”
“It was traumatic!”
“But you said it was when you were fifteen -- that was two years ago.”
“You go get scratched by a cat then come back to me and tell me you didn’t get traumatized,” he snapped immaturely.
Jaehyun only laughed and patted his back. “You’re funny -- I like you, Jayden.”
“No, I don’t want to sit there, my brother’s there,” a voice said from a distance, interrupting their conversation.
“Well, the only empty seats are over there.”
“Then let’s go there! Anywhere’s better than with that jerk.”
Suddenly, two girls walked up to the boys’ table, one holding a metal tray, the other holding a lunch box.
“Hi,” Jaehyun spoke, a bit confused by their presence. “Would you like to sit here?”
“If it’s okay with you guys -- we don’t want to interrupt you two, or anything.”
“It’s not a problem! Have seat,” Jayden grinned. “I’m Jayden, and this is Jaehyun,” he said, gesturing to the nodding boy beside him. “What are your names?”
“I’m Xiaoyi, and this is Chaemi,” the Chinese spoke happily, seating herself. “Aren’t you two boys in the new homeroom?”
“Mm-hm,” Jaehyun nodded. “You bet we are -- after all, we’re the most isolated group, aren’t we? The other students don’t seem to… appreciate our new arrival so much.”
Chaemi scoffed. “Tell me something I don’t know.”
“Our whole other half of our class is at the other table, if you didn’t know that,” Xiaoyi spoke, chuckling to herself.
“Oh, I know,” Chaemi answered, a light smile playing on her lips. “Our homeroom is practically, what, ten people?”
“No, eleven,” Jaehyun corrected. “I counted!”
Chaemi furrowed her brow in confusion. “Then who’s missing? I just counted ten people here at these tables.”
Xioayi snapped her fingers. “Ah! I know -- that one quiet kid with blondish-brown hair. What was his name…? Tae… Dae… something? I don’t know. He seems pretty lonely, though.”
“…Now that I think about it, he didn’t really talk to anyone,” Chaemi said, blinking.
“Is he mute?”
“Nah, maybe he’s just shy.”
“Well, I want to meet him,” Xiaoyi decided. “I want to figure out what he’s like! He seems kind of… interesting.”
“You sound like a stalker,” Jaehyun pointed out. “Or maybe a high-school girl with a one-sided crush.”
“I am not!” Xiaoyi defended. “I don’t need a man at all! I can live all by myself, just loving me!”
“How?” Jayden blinked. “You don’t want to get married or anything?”
“No, I want to get married. I just have to find a guy that lives up to my expectations first.”
Chaemi laughed. “And those expectations are…?”
“Well, first off, he has to be more awesome and amazing than me, and believe me, that’s a pretty hard thing to do.”
“So, what are you doing here all by yourself?” Donghyun asked softly.
Jaesun snapped his head up, surprised by the intrusion. “I-I just… I like photography,” he answered quietly.
Donghyun walked into the dim photography room of the school, approaching the lone student with a camera quietly.
“So, why are you’re here by yourself?” he asked again, a gentle smile on his face.
The boy looked down. “I don’t know… I like being by myself, I guess.”
As soon as the bell had rung, he had made a beeline to his locker, dropping off most of his books and picking up a paper map he had been given. Having no real appetite, he found the photography room, and stayed there in solitude, playing with his camera.
Donghyun put a hand on his shoulder. “Is there a reason you like being alone? Aren’t you lonely?”
Jaesun said, “Not really -- I mean, I’ve always spent a lot of time by myself, so, I’m used to it.”
Donghyun sat down next to him. “Are you sure you don’t want to go to the cafeteria with the rest of your class and buy a snack or something?”
“No, I’m alright, Donghyun-seongsengnim, but thank you for the offer,” he replied politely.
Donghyun frowned slightly, but it went unnoticed by his student. “Well,” he said, “don’t come here too often -- it worries me.”
“It’s okay,” Jaesun replied, staring down at his camera. “Besides, I like it here -- it’s… quieter.”
Donghyun sighed. “Well, try to talk to people, okay? One of kids in this class are probably just like you.”
Jaesun let out a breathy chuckle. “Well, I highly doubt that, but thanks anyways.”
“Just try to. It might actually help.”
Yes, well, at long last, here is our second chapter.
