I stepped onto the sidewalk.

CRASH.

I spun around, my heart in my throat. No it couldn’t be. Please, no. No. No!

I knew it before I saw anything. I watched frozen and helpless as my sister’s slender body floated to the ground, like a beautiful leaf falling in an autumn breeze. A fallen leaf – a leaf void of all life. Bright crimson red spotted her simple white dress like a scattering of petals on snow. Lone petals that would soon freeze under the icy grip of falling snow.

No, Krystal, no. You can’t possibly…

NO!

A soundless cry escaped my lips as Krystal’s body laid limp, splayed awkwardly on the hard grey road like a doll that had fallen off its shelf. A broken, ragged doll that can never be mended.

It was too late.

She was gone.
