Forever and ever
Unlocked Doors
They say there is a ghost in the school, in the dormitories to be exact. But in a catholic school for girls surrounded by churches, nuns and gothic buildings, the new girl expected such legends as she started her term.
However the first time she heard some murmurs outside her door a rush of hot fear swept over her back. The girl quickly got on her feet. She tip toed with much fear toward the door. She stared at all the locks, something she found peculiar as she arrived.
She had locked the door earlier but didn’t place the chain in place or put the padlock. She thought it was exaggerated. But now she slid the chain to place and pressed her ear to the door.
“Two million two hundred fifty-six thousand seven hundred twenty-one, two million two hundred fifty-six thousand seven hundred twenty-two,” said a voice outside.
What could they possibly be counting that had such number? The girl was curious and she convinced herself that it must be a prank from one of the girls. So she slowly unlocked her door As slowly as possible she open the door just a crack, as far as the chain allowed her.
There she saw them.
There were two girls, sitting fearlessly by the rails. One pointed up, counting the stars. The other held her hand tightly.
The girl felt entranced watching those ethereal girls. They were beautiful but they seemed somewhat terrifying in the middle of the night. They were ghostly and surreal.
Without warning and making every hair in her body raise up, the girls slowly turned their heads at the exact same time to stare at her. They had eyes as dark as night and they peered curiously but with little expression.
The girl felt like running or screaming but the fear glued her into place. But just as abruptly as they turned their heads and just as synchronized, the girls looked away. They kept counting the stars. One giggled richly, telling the other she got the wrong number, she said that the other already counted that star.
The girl closed the door trembling, they speaked so lightly but their image was one of beauty and shadows.
She locked anything that was capable of being locked and went to her bed. She had no sleep that night.
The next morning there were two butterflies just outside her door.
“Well we are all sinners aren’t we? By thought, by action, by desire… One way or another.”
“If she is a demon then I’ll be a sinner.”
… for there is something about the forbidden that makes even the most terrible things desirable.
"We should then count the stars together."
"Forever and ever."
