Three to 5 days monthly, your lover is literally smarter. He’s more alert- intuitive even. He abides by the unspoken rules. Like the back of his hand, he knows them well. Even before you two started sharing a bedroom, he’s learned to live with them.

Days 2 and 3 are when he has to really tread carefully.

You win every debate. Period. Anything that you finally decide to wear looks wonderful and he doesn’t dare complain about the menagerie of rejected outfits piled on the bed. Your cooking is especially delicious on these evenings and he’s not quick to agree with you when you insist that the vegetables need more salt. He responds to your side-eyeing by finishing all that’s on his plate with a smile.

On the 4th day, he comes home to find you waist deep in fried food and ice cream. He greets you with a sweet kiss as if he hadn’t noticed you snarling at everything and everyone for the past couple of days. He doesn’t badger you for a homemade meal and draws you a warm bath after his shower. The counter is cleared of the wrappers and empty containers when you join him in the kitchen later. You’ll be having spicy Ramen for dinner because his culinary skills are even more limited than yours. He’s still in such a giving mood and it makes your heart tremble a little so you let him continue to dote.

The end of your cycle is like the settling quiet after a storm. You assess the damage while he sits beside you silently on the couch. As he’s flipping through the late night programs, you wonder if you’ve been overly cynical or cruel this week. Did you hurt his feelings at any time during your hormonal crapfest?

You quickly come to find that the only thing you can be sure of is that he was always calm and compliant through it all. The perfect boyfriend.

“Baby…” You mumble after watching the television’s lighting dance across his face for a while.

“Hmm?” You have his attention immediately, but not all of it. His eyes are still glued to the large screen ahead.

“Seung-hyun.” You reach out to him this time as an added measure.

He turns finally, instinctively clasping his hand around yours. “Yeah, babe.”

After a few moments of looking into his eyes, you realize that you don’t have much to say. This is all you really wanted- to be close to him and exchange affection. You can’t seem to verbalize the swelling of contentment in your chest.

Before he grows worried over your not speaking, you say simply and sincerely, “Thank you.”
