Red Lips & Soft Fingers { h i a t u s }

chapter five
      lies&the beginning of a new friendship;
                                                                                                                                                                                                                           -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kyungsoo was walking silently down the stairs while looking out of the window at the students who were chatting happily in that beautiful day. He smiled to himself then turned right to go towards the lockers. Passing by the principal’s office, he couldn’t help but stop and listen when his eyes caught a glimpse of no other than his ‘awesome’ best friend, Kim Jongin.

“How did you manage to do something like that?” the principal asked; voice full of concern. “Are you okay?” however, Jongin could only nod.

“I’m fine. Unfortunately, it seems you have to send somebody else to the competition.” The elder one sighed, looking through some papers which were messily placed on his desk.

“I guess you’re right.” He mumbled, and one moment later, Jongin stood up from the chair and started to walk towards the door, leaning on a crutch.

“Have a good day, principal.” He said, receiving a simple nod from the latter.

Kyungsoo’s eyes went wide open when his best friend came out of the office with his left leg in a cast. Words could not explain the shock the doe-eyed teen had when he saw his best friend in such a plight. Jongin only smiled, the same smile he used to have everyday he met his beloved Kyungsoo, then passed by him just to hit somebody else with the crutch, causing a gasp to escape the certain person’s lips.

“What happened with you?” and those, were exactly the same words which were playing in Kyungsoo’s mind, ready to come out from his mouth as a scream in any minute.

“I fell on the stairs last night.” Jongin sadly said. “I kept thinking at your words…and I didn’t pay attention.” All of the sudden, YiXing felt as the world entirely fell over his head. He felt extremely bad, guilty, and somehow like never being able to forgive himself for saying those things, seeing the consequences. Jongin was a dancer; what if he would be never able to dance again?
“Kai, I’m sorr-”
“Go and win that competition for me, buddy!” Jongin threw his fists in the air, then signaled for Kyungsoo to follow him.

“Look! There’s absolutely nothing wrong with my leg! I put it in a cast to convince the principal I can’t dance so he would send somebody else instead of me!” Jongin explained for God knows which time since he and Kyungsoo arrived in the cafeteria. The other only shook his head as an expression of slight disappointment came onto his face.

“But why?! This competition was the thing you dreamed at the whole year!”

“I know…” Kai could only whisper.

“It is really important to you, Jongin.” The said one kept silence. That’s right! This competition was the thing he wished to win with all his heart, but Jongin realized there were other things more precious in his life.

“He’s more important than that.” He smiled. Kyungsoo, however, wasn’t sure about the things his best friend’s heart was dictating him to do.

“Does it hurt badly?” YiXing came after some moments and sat next to Kai at the dinning table, placing his backpack on his lap. Jongin could only nod, while biting into his bottom lip. There was a sad expression on his face, although, his eyes were smiling, or maybe more than that.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to say those for real. I am really sorry…”

Kyungsoo saw the guilt the Chinese’s eyes were emitting and felt extremely sorry for him. It wasn’t fair for Jongin to lie him like that, actually, it was completely selfish, and the doe-eyed boy was sure Jongin’s game wasn’t going to end up too well.

“The principal called me inside his office.” YiXing sighed. “He wanted to send me at the dance competition instead of you.” Jongin smirked, seeing everything was working exactly the way he planned. “But I refused him.” Kyungsoo’s mouth fell. Kim Jongin’s also.

“W-What?” Kai wanted to say more; to yell at the latter; to scold him for doing such a huge mistake, but there were no words to do so. Nor his heart, neither his mind allowed him to do the things he wanted.

“It would have been rude from me to take your place. I would never do something like that to you. It’s your competition, not mine.” The Chinese gently smiled, then placed one hand on Jongin’s shoulder. “But hey, what an irony! You can’t go also!” he shrugged and quickly dashed through the crowd of students.  Kyungsoo couldn’t help but burst in laughter. The whole situation was so damn funny he just couldn’t hold it in.

“Wow! I bet your girlfriend was so freaking worried!” Kim Joonmyun said, kneeling in front of Jongin and looking with an eyebrow raised at the cast. “Does she know this is a fake?” he hit the ‘injured’ leg with his fist making Kyungsoo laugh one more time. Kai only shook his head while tightening his jaw.

“I’m going to break it for real in your if you don’t get lost from here right in this moment.”

“I dare you to try.” Joonmyun smirked and looked with his piercing gaze straight into his opponent’s ones for a couple of moments. He then chuckled and turned to leave, of course not before he threw a flirty wink to Jongin’s friend.

Chen felt awful. All that time spent with Joonmyun made his head spine every time he heard the said one’s name. Obviously, the red haired guy was nothing more but a burden. No matter how many times would have Jongdae explained him some basic math things people their age were forced to already know, Joonmyun would have never understood a thing. He was way too lost in his own, little world, and Chen was more than aware of that.

“How’s your little friend doing?” and like that started every day of tutoring between Joonmyun and Jongdae. A simple question, that’s right, but Chen felt like hitting his head on the walls because of hearing it so many times.

“Kyungsoo.” He said, remembering Joonmyun, once again, how his ‘little friend’ was named.

“Right! I met him in the cafeteria in my way here.” Chen raised one eyebrow while his shoulders sank.

“Then way are you asking me that?” he whined, bringing his right hand to touch his head which was already feeling like ready to explode in any second.

“Politeness?”

“Do you even know what’s that?” Joonmyun frowned. Chen slightly flinched at the sight he had in front of his eyes but he immediately vanished the tear by throwing a boot to the latter. “Page 157. Solve all the exercises.”

“All of them? But there are too many!” Jongdae started to laugh.

“They are only 7.”

“Too many!” Joonmyun childishly cried, making his tutor shake his head, amused.

“Exactly!” he smiled. “I’ll be looking for a book with more equations. You have to work hard in order to pass your math exam this year and keep your ‘beautiful’ image untouched by not being called a ‘stupid’…thing you already are, but yeah, you can’t have everything. Anyway, I’ll be right there…” he raised his index finger and showed Joonmyun the math section of the school’s library. “…while you’ll be right here, solving those. If not, I’m telling the principal.” Joonmyun made a face, then opened the book at the page Chen told him to. “Don’t forget! I’m watching you!” a firm look was thrown straight into the red-haired artist’s eyes before Jongdae disappeared through the many shelves of useless books.

“The s I do.” Joonmyun mumbled, looking completely lost at all those numbers and equations, wondering what he should start firstly with.

Chen smiled to himself. He loved to take control over people he disliked and of course he enjoyed at maximum to boss Joonmyun around. What was so amazing in all this thing was the little, well, not really, fact that Joonmyun could do nothing about it. Jongdae felt like a real teacher; so powerful and unbreakable.

Once in front of the section he was looking for, Chen started to look for the book he needed. He started from bottom shelf and finally stopped when he saw it on the top one. His mouth fell wide open when he realized there was no way he could have reached that high. He stretched his arms, his body, his legs, jumped as high as he could, but nothing. Deeply sighing, Jongdae placed his hands on his hips and started thinking of a way to get that book down. Maybe he could have called Joonmyun and put the boy raise him on his shoulders. Thinking at that once again, Jongdae could only make a face and wipe off the idea, being sure Joonmyun would do nothing more but laugh at his height, although he wasn’t that tall himself also.

While Chen was still in his profound thoughts of how he could get the back down and maybe grow a little bit taller, a hand came from behind the boy and took that damn book off its’ shelf.

“You could have used a ladder.” a husky voice spoke right next to his ear, making the said one jump forward and like an idiot, hit his head in the thick spine of a random book. “Exactly.” The stranger shrugged and held his hand out to give the other the heap of papers. When their eyes met, Chen’s ones turned into a dark shade of brown and with shaking hands, he took the book.

“Thanks, YiFan.” He mumbled.

“Kris…for the unknown ones.” Kris smirked and then turned to leave.

“Kris.” Chen said before a sarcastic hiss left his lips. “Exactly.” He turned around and walked to the table Joonmyun was still trying to solve his task. “You finished?”

“I have four more.” The other sighed, slamming his head over the notebook, and then looked at Chen with pleading eyes.

“But you solved, well, tried to solve, only three. What is that hard, Joonmyun? I could have done them with my eyes closed and still finish before you.” The red haired boy shrugged.

“I’m not made for math! And anyway, what took you so long?” Jongdae smiled before pursing his lips together.

“Let’s just say I met an unknown human being.”

“…alright.” Joonmyun said before a long silence in which he tried to realize what was his little tutor talking about. Chen started to laugh at the priceless face he had in front of his eyes, making Joonmyun throw his pencil at him.

“Stop laughing, you retard!”

Kris watched the two talking and laughing, and started wondering what the relationship between them was. Were they friends? Relatives? Classmates? Whatever it was, he didn’t like Chen around him, Kim Joonmyun, the Kim Joonmyun he knew so well, the one YiFan never wished for a guy or girl to ever date.

“Yeah…” he mumbled, the corner of his lips slightly raising upwards. “Kris. Only Kris.” He sighed, and with a long, last gaze, he walked out of the library with heavy steps.
