Chapter 1

Our Keeper of Time

Nam Woohyun:

I pulled the gummy earbuds out of my ears and looked up at the sky. It was just about time for me to attend my first day of college. I was nervous, but I tried my best to be indifferent. Indifference is what saves my sanity, keeps my mind at peace and lets me drown out all of the bad things that corrupt people.

I looked at the time on my iphone and shoved it back in my pocket. 8:05, time for Appreciation of the Arts. I looked to my left and saw a girl and a boy walking together, slapping each other lightly on the shoulder and laughing at silly comments they exchanged. I sighed and walked to the building marked Art App. on my campus map.

It was a small, crummy looking building. Square, plain, brick building with a dead shrub next to the door. I contemplated on whether or not I should just walk in or skip and pretend I didn't know where it was because I was new. I went in.

Luckily it was empty, with the exception of a tall skinny boy in the corner breathing into a book, sniffing occasionally. I picked a seat in the very back and threw my bag onto the ground clumsily. It wasn't but 5 minutes and people had already begun to flood in, chatter and commotion stirring up the nervous feelings that began to find their way back into my lungs, taking my breath away and causing my throat to close up. Just as I started to think about getting up and leaving, my heart fluttered.

I blinked, blinked harder, blinked again. Why is it that some random guy who just walked in has made my head spin? A guy. Male. A... GUY. A medium height, squinty eyed, russet-haired, boy with black, framed glasses and a grey jacket. I watched him inconspicuously as he walked toward the middle section of seats and sat his bag down next to an other boy with slightly girly features and wide eyes. He greeted him casually with a smile. A straight, white-toothed smile that turned his eyes up, barely open at all. I found my face heating up and had to look away, my heart pounding in my chest for reasons I can't quite explain.

Kim Sunggyu:

"Hey, Hyung! Over here! Sit here!" I spotted Sungjong waving to me from the midsection of the room and took a seat next to him, greeting him back. "How have you been?" He nodded his head and affirmed that he'd been good since the last time we'd seen each other. I smiled back at him and looked down at my bag, before snatching it up and sifting through it for my Art App. Notebook. "Here are all of the notes from last year's Art App. If you want it, you can have it. They might help you with the written assignments at least." He took it from my hands and thanked me.

I assessed the surroundings, recognizing a few people from last year's Art App. Class, also trying to acknowledge some new faces I didn't recognize. I looked behind me and saw a boy staring at me in a weird manner. I smiled awkwardly and turned back around. I nudged Sungjong in the side to get his attention. "Yah, do you know that kid in the back that's staring over here?" He looked back and shook his head. "No, why?" I shrugged and pushed it out of my mind.

Mr. Kang, our Art Appreciation teacher walked in through the door and everyone started to settle down into their seats, greating him politely. He was a short, tired looking man with worry lines grooved into his face forever. His hair was greying and he wore a red sweater and grey slacks. The rest of the class passed slowly, beginning with a little bit of information about the class and what it means to study Appreciation of the Arts. He went over class guidelines as usual and read the policies animatedly, mustering yawns from various persons around the room. I layed my head down, and soon, I had fallen asleep.

Nam Woohyun:

I watched him put his head down on his desk and took the opportunity to study him. He had a cute, straight nose, and pretty pink lips with a soft, shapely cupids bow. His squinty eyes were closed in a thin, dark line. He looked like a hamster. I couldn't help but giggle to myself when I noticed the resemblance. I let my eyes trace from his face to his clothes, to his feet, and back again to his face. I swallowed the lump in my throat and coughed, trying to disract myself from the boy sitting 2 rows and 1 seat to the right of me, sleeping soundly on his desk, stirring lightly every few minutes or so. His friend nudged him and he didn't wake, so he let him be. I looked down at my class syllabus and pretended to read it, forcing my eyes to follow the words.

Mr. Kang tapped on his podium with his pencil loudly and pointed at the clock in the back of the room. "Well that's it for today. I hope we can get started with section one Wednesday. I'll see all of you in two days. You're dismissed." I quickly shoved everything back into my torn, black backpack and stood, slinging it over my shoulder.

I started to leave with the crowd when I noticed that the hamster-like boy was still sleeping, his head turned slightly downward on his desk. His friend hadn't even bothered to wake him up. I let the thought of waking him up myself pass through my head for a split second, but I decided against it and ran from the building, breathing in the fresh air that filled my lungs with relief. I could breathe freely again.

I pulled out my schedule and read over it. I only had two classes to attend on Mondays. My second one was Trig 2, and it wasn't until 11:00. I still had an hour left to waste. I decided to take a walk around campus and find all of the buildings I had to know for my classes so I wouldn't have to do it later.

Kim Sunggyu:

I felt a tap on my shoulder and woke up instantly with a startle. Panic ran through my blood and I snapped my head around to the clock to see that class had only ended a few minutes ago.

I apologized repetedly to Mr. Kang and gathered my things.

As I was leaving I tripped over my own feet and fell onto the door, pushing it open and landing on the pavement. Flustered, I sat up and checked myself for scrapes. When all was clear I pushed myself back up onto my knees and picked my things up, cursing myself in the process. "How embarrassing." I muttered under my breath.

Mr. Kang was standing at the door with a concerned look on his face. I bowed my head and waved slightly. "I'm fine, all good, no worries." I turned my head and grimaced, walking away awkwardly until I was out of range.

I noticed the kid who was staring at me earlier standing in the middle of the sidewalk with his brows furrowed. He was focused on what looked like a map and was tracing his finger from one side to the other, flipping the page around chaotically. I approached him and asked curtly if he'd like some help.

He looked up at the sound of my voice and his furrowed brows morphed into fright. His mouth dropped open slightly and his lip quivered as if he wanted to say something but it wouldn't come out.

"I.." I took the map from him, sorry to have startled him. "Which building do you need? I'll show you there." He looked down and snatched the campus map from my hands, crumpling it. "Trig." I tipped my head to the side in thought.

"Ah, right. That's just a few buildings left of the Changwon Dormhouse. You need me to show you where it is?" He shook his head and staggered back. "No, I'm fine." I scoffed. "You aren't very polite for an underclassman, are you? I'm Kim Sunggyu, how about yourself?" He diverted his eyes somewhere in the distance.

"Nam Woohyun."
