It was his sunshine’s twenty third birthday that night. A somewhat huge banner with a “Happy Birthday Sunshine!” was drawn all over it (with crayons), and flimsily hung in between the poles, as twenty three candles were placed around the platform. The universe, the brushing gust of wind, the trillions seen and unseen of white stars, and that one bright moon in the dark sky became their only guests that night. It was a birthday celebration for two; and Minhyuk couldn’t think of anything better but a time, and place solely for the two of them.

His sunshine is no other than his Song Joohee.

He bought a small white, round cheese cake for her, with a squirrel image designed on top of the cake, as he then sang her the traditional “Happy Birthday” song, except that he added a little, freestyle rap at the end of it. She flashed him a quick smile, closed her eyes, and blew the candles off in a single blow.

“Why sunshine?” She bluntly asked, as she watched how he clumsily cut the cake into smaller pieces, before feeding her one.

“Because you’re my sunshine,” He laughed, and poked her nose lightly.

She stuck out her tongue at him, dissatisfied, “But why do you call me sunshine?”

“Do you really want to know?”

“Amuse me, Lee Minhyuk,”

“Well, firstly, you’re my sunshine because your hair resembles one,”

Joohee rolled her eyes, “Ha ha, funny,” and he chuckled,

“Secondly, you’re my sunshine because you’re my source of energy. Because your laugh is infectious and because you always manage to make me smile, even when I tried to pull a sour face when you do such annoying things like being an hour late to our dates, or waking me up very late at night just because you’re hungry and you want me to cook something for you,”

Joohee blinked once, twice.

“Thirdly, you’re my sunshine because you’re always the light to my dull life.  Because you’re weird, and your weirdness took me out of my shell; because you were shy on our first date, and you surprised me with your hula-hula imitations on our next date, and because I first fell for you when I saw you childishly kicking and throwing sands at the beach,”

Joohee felt butterflies tingling.

“Fourthly, you’re my sunshine because that day when I fell for you, the sun shone the brightest, and you were there standing, gracefully tucking a strand of your hair beneath your ear. And because that’s when I learnt to call you my sunshine, even before I decided to confess to you weeks later,”

“Minhyuk-ah,”

“And lastly, because you’re my Song Joohee, and because you are you,”
