♪Neo  neo-e-ge e-e-ge oh oh♪~

“You’re playing it again?!” Peniel yelled at Hyunsik and Sungjae as he entered the dance studio, a towel draped around his neck.

The young maknae quickly pocketed his phone, not bothering to shut off the Beast video he had been playing. Hyunsik simply stood up and walked over to look down on his dongsaeng.

“Of course we are.” He said with a smile. “If we’re gonna get better, why not learn from the best.”

“They’re not the best.” Peniel scowled removing his towel and draped it over the bar adjacent to the mirror. “They’re just older.”

“Well I think they’re good.” Minhyuk said entering the room, followed by the leader, Eunkwang.

“They’re not that good.” Peniel replied once he turned his head away from the group.

Eunkwang couldn’t help but smile as Changsub and Ilhoon entered. “ Ok. Let’s get to it. Let’s run through ‘Irresistible lips’ from the top. And please guys. Take it seriously” He walked over to his ipod, already plugged into his speakers and the rest of the group got into position. He hit play and quickly took his position once the music started.

♪ Shigani neuryeojineun sunkaniyeosseo Ijekkeot baewotdeon neukkyeotdeon mideotdeon areumdaumeul Neon bakkwosseo~ ♪

The music began and the 7 boys practiced their movements. All of them were moving flawless through the first verse, Peniel trying his hardest not to miss a single count. However, once the chorus started, he began to fall apart. He began struggling at the beginning, falling behind count after count. Once the time came for him to sing along, Peniel couldn’t help but trip over himself.

Eunkwang stopped the music and the rest of the members tried to stifle a laugh.

“Need some help?” Hyunsik pulled Peniel up to his feet, smiling at his dongsaeng. “ You were doing so well. How’d you fall apart like that?”

Peniel diverted his gaze from his hyung and answered, “I just lost count.”

“You’re overthinking it, Pen. How about I help you out” Hyunsik walked over, offering a hand to Peniel.

“Thanks but no thanks, Hyung. I’ve done this plenty of times. I don’t need your help”

Hyunsik sighed heavily looking at Peniel. He knew Peniel’s stubborn attitude was what was holding back his potential but he would not help someone who wouldn’t ask for help.

“Ok. Let’s take it from the top” Eunkwang reached down for his ipod and Sungjae spoke up.

“Wait! Maybe we can try something a little different. Have a little fun with it. You know like how Beast does with their rehearsals.” He immediately went into a familiar Beast move. He swayed his hips as he smiled and sang one of his favorite tunes. “♪Nan niga jeil joha.~ Niga jeil yeppeo.~ Jinaganeun gotgot maeryeogi da heulleo~♪”

Peniel glared at the maknae as Hyunsik and Changsub joined in. They copied Beast’s moves perfectly and all sang along. “ ♪Niga jeil joha neo hanamyeon dwae.~ Gaseume saegyeodwo.~ Niga sesangeseo jeil sojunghae.~♪”

The three boys started laughing though Peniel glared unamused. He hated when the boys would imitate Beast. It made him feel inferior to the other Cube group. The group with more experience.

Eunkwang smiled, rolling his eyes at the younger boys. “Alright. Irresistible lips. From the top.”

Peniel arrived at the dorm and layed on his bed above Minhyuk’s. The others had gone out for dinner but he didn’t feel the desire to socialize. He shifted some blankets around his bed until he found a small blue book. He pulled a matching blue mechanical pencil from between the pages and wrote an entry in his private journal.

Journal entry 101 Date September 10, 2012

It’s already been six months since we debuted. I feel as though I’m the only one struggling to sing and dance at the same time. Hyunsik’s always offering to help but I’d rather not listen to him. I don’t want to owe him anything. BtoB has been a part of Cube for a while now, but all I seem to hear is about how great Beast is. No one seems to recognize BtoB as an official band. We’ll always be in the shadow of those six, for lack of a better word, children as long as their music keeps selling. It sickens me. Just because they’re older. I’ve never noticed before, but I truly hate Beast. Sometimes, I wish they’d just disappear.

Peniel closed his journal and sat up, looking at his watch. The sun outside was starting to set as he descended the ladder of his bunk. He decided it’d be best if he were to go out for a walk before the other boys returned. He knew the best thing for him would be to go out and get some fresh air. He needed to clear his head. He grabbed a white hoodie, pulling the hood up over his head. He took a deep breath and exited the dorm.

Peniel had walked for what felt like hours. The sun had already set and the chilly air of late summer began to embrace him. He decided to go into a cafe to try and warm up a little. After ordering a small coffee, he leaned back in his chair and re-evaluated his choices throughout the day. He couldn’t help but think he was being too hard on himself and groupmates. They only wanted him the be his best.  He felt he had been a little tough on Sungjae. He just wanted to imitate his idols. Peniel sighed and layed his head on the table as the waitress placed his coffee.

He picked up the coffee taking a sip of the sweet beverage. He sighed and managed to relax for a moment before his attitude turned sour. That song! He moved his hands up to his ears. The last song he wanted to hear played over the cafe radio. Beast’s ‘Bad Girl.’

“They premiered 3 years ago! Why is this song still playing!!” Peniel grabbed his coffee and quickly exited the shop., the night air consuming him once more. He sighed heavily, continuing his walk. He clearly needed more air.

After sometime, he noticed he had become lost and began frantically searching the streets of Seoul for the way back to his dorm. Most of the shops were closing at this time so the young foreigner began to panic. He quickly but cautiously ran through the streets before arriving at an alleyway. Looking down the dirty alley, he could spot a small blue shop, the lights still on.

Peniel approached the shop, turning the doorknob. He was immediately greeted by an arrangement of hanging beads and the strong smell of burning incense. Peniel could immediately tell by the odd decour that this was no ordinary shop. It was a fortune teller’s shop.

“Come in, young Shin Dong Geun.” The alluring voice of a woman called for him from the shops  rear.”

“How do you know my name?” Peniel moved toward the woman.

“I’ve been expecting you”

Peniel sat in the chair across the table,adjacent to the woman. “Do you have any idea how cliche that sounded?”

The lady looked up at Peniel, her brow slightly furrowed. “I can see into your future, Peniel.”

“Um. Yeah. I’m just looking for directions on how to get back to my dorm so if you could-”

“You are quite talented for someone so young. It’s a shame you’re struggling so much with your singing and dancing.”

“How’d you know I’m struggling?”

“I told you, I can see your future.”

“Um. Yeah. So I’m just gonna go now. You're obviously just some crazed fan who happened to see my last dance practice somehow.” He stood from his chair and continued. “So, um, I think I’ll just be leaving now. It was nice meeting you and all but please stay away from the rehearsal hall-”

The woman stood up putting her hands on her hips. looking Peniel in the eye. “Look, kid. Ya’ want your fortune told or not. I’m wastin’ time here.”

Peniel sat back down and the woman also returned to her seat. The woman then proceeded to wave her hands over her crystal ball before peering up at Peniel. “I also see one more thing. A hatred. A deep seeded hatred for a rival group.” Peniel rubbed his temples as he knew exactly to whom the woman was referring. Beast.

“Why do you hate them so much. They’re really good.”

“No, they’re just older. I’m tired of them hogging the spotlight. It’s time they gracefully step aside and let BtoB take the top Cube spot. We could be as good as them if we’d been around as long as them.”

The woman narrowed her eyes and smiled at Peniel. “Sounds to me that you have a deep desire to see Beast fail.”

“It’s not that I want them to fail. I just want everyone to realize we’re just as good and deserve as much recognition.”

“Very well Peniel, I shall grant you one wish. Use it wisely as you can’t go back after you make it.”

“Fine. You want me to make a wish! I wish for just as much..no.. more. I want more experience than Beast. I wish, just for once we can outshine them and expose those boys for the children they are.”

The woman smiled waving her hands over the crystal ball. “So shall it be done.”

Peniel stood up and walked to the door as the woman stared deep into the crystal orb. “I’m out of here. You’re weird.” He then left the shop, his hands stuffed into his pockets. “I should’ve wished for directions.”

The woman gazed deep into her crystal orb as the target of her spell came into focus.

At the Beast dorm, six boys laid asleep soundly, unaware of the magic that has just been cast upon their lives.
