The Many Faces Of Love

I woke up to the warm sunrays shining on through the curtains onto my face. Rubbing my eyes sleepily, I sat up in my bed and stretched. I had a satisfying dreamless sleep and was filled with good vibes. I smiled as I looked over to my alarm clock. The time read 9.30am.

I got out of bed happily, humming a happy tune. I straightened out the bed cover and prodded up my pillow up against my bolster. I pulled my curtains open, allowing the beautiful sunshine to come into my room. As I was walking over to my door, I spied my schoolbag lying on the floor. I picked it up and put it onto my study desk.

Then, I grabbed my phone that was on the desk and saw that I had two new text messages. I slide my fingers against the touch screen, unlocking the phone. Suddenly, I noticed the time and date at the top left hand corner of my phone screen.

It was 9.40am, on a….

FRIDAY?!

I spun around in shock and double-checked the time on my alarm clock again.

Yup, it was 9.40am!

“FISHING HOLE! 9.40AM? I SHOULD BE AT SCHOOL! AIIISSSHHH!!!” I cursed loudly as I raced out of my room, grabbing my towel and uniform that was hanging on the handle of the door. I rushed through a shower and changed into my uniform at record speed. I was about to dash into my room to grab my schoolbag when I noticed a piece of note stuck to my door. I tore it off and read it.

There was a realistic drawing of a pig that had a big ugly bruise-like thing at the top of its head. I turned it over, and saw that it was from Kyuhyun.

Unicorn Comatose Pig-ni,

Tried waking you up but you were sleeping like the dead. Don’t you dare blame me…

Anyway you will scare the hell out of everybody with your new trendy makeup if you come to

school today. Please stay at home for the good of the public. =P

Oh ya, don’t molest my dear cousin again okay? He’s mine.

P.S: Don’t bother poisoning my dinner. I’ll make sure Heechul tries the food first before I eat

anything.

Handsome PrinceKyu

I crumpled up the note in a fit of frustration. Then, I couldn’t help but smile. It was just the style of Kyuhyun to rub in the misfortune of his friends. I threw the crumpled ball of paper into my wastepaper bin as I reentered my room. Retrieving the text messages from just now, I discovered they were from Heechul and Kyuhyun respectively. Heechul’s one was that he would be coming home for dinner tonight while Kyuhyun’s is more annoyance provoking.

dEvil-Kyu

What did u do last night wif SM?

So tired till I couldn’t even wake u up?

Aish, such a waste of my time in the morning!

>.<

U still dare to say?!

=( How can u leave me at home!

I hav a science test today!

Did u really try to wake me up?

I din hear anything!

As I waited for his reply, I noticed it was already 10am. I decided to skip school for the day as it was already too late to rush there anyway. I sighed, set my phone back down on my desk, and changed back into home clothes. I hung my uniform back neatly on the hanger and hung it back into the wardrobe as I wasn’t going to need it until Monday comes around.

Picking up my phone, I exited the room. Sungmin must already be awake as his door was wide open. Knocking lightly, I poked my head into his room, only to find it empty. I stepped into his room and looked around. The room was almost the same as it was last night, but most of his stuff was already up. The top shelf of his study desk was already filled with books. The desk had a powder pink laptop set up on it.

Seeing the pink laptop reminded me of the incident last night. I slapped myself mentally as I was reminded of my tactless behaviour. “Oh gosh… I feel so bad! What can I do to make it up to him?” I covered my face with both my palms as I exclaimed exasperatedly.

Suddenly, a bright idea came into my mind. I looked around at his almost bare room again, inspecting it carefully. “Since he like pink… I’ll paint his room pink! Yes! I’m sure he’ll love it!” I gushed in excitement. At this point of time, I really felt it was a great way to make it up to Sungmin.

Filled with excitement, I skipped to my room, grabbed one of my many sling-bags, slapped a duck-cap on to hide the hideous bruise on my forehead, and left the house after throwing my wallet, together with my phone into the bag. As I waiting for the lift, a text message came through again. It must be Kyuhyun.

dEvil-Kyu

Wad do u mean u nv hear anything?

I almost broke the door down!

Wad science test?

My class science test!

Aiish, if I flunk it, It’s ur fault!

><

Just as I finished replying him, the lift arrived. However, as I stepped into the lift to head to the ground floor, my phone rang again. In my mind’s eye, I pictured Kyuhyun slacking off in class, not listening to the teacher, typing underneath his desk.

dEvil-Kyu

Challenge Accepted

Prize: Honey Glazed Pork Chops :)

I burst out laughing. Three months ago, I came across the recipe for Honey Glazed Pork Chops. Knowing he loves pork chops, I prepared it in an attempt to improve our friendship. Not only it worked, he had been bugging me to make it again. However, the steps are troublesome so I always couldn’t be bothered. Since then it had became a reward for favours in our small little household.

As I stepped out of the building, I saw the ajusshi in charge of the maintenance in our building standing at the security post, talking to the security guard. I got to know the maintenance ajusshi because I helped him out when he was maintaining the common corridor lights outside our apartment last month. I greeted the both of them with a bright smile and they smiled back at me.

“Going out?” the maintenance ajusshi asked cheerily.

“Yup,” I answered happily, then continued as an idea came to my mind, “Ajusshi, are you free later on?”

“I’m free now actually, what’s wrong?”

“Haha,” I laughed nervously as I put on my sweetest smile, “Ajusshi, I need your help in painting my friend’s room, can you help me please? I want to give my friend a surprise, but I won’t be able to finish before my friend is back! Please???”

“Aigoo… Since you helped me the other time round… Okay, Ajusshi will help you this time!”

“Yay! Ajusshi you are the best!”

So I got into his van. Ajusshi was a very nice person. When he found out that I was going to paint my friend’s room as a mean of apology, he drove me to a household items wholesaler, where he said the prices were much cheaper.

Man! That shop was HUGE! They sold everything from flowerpots to curtains. They even sold stools and chairs! They had such a wide selection of paint colours available that I couldn’t make a choice. There had to be at least 20 different shades of pink! In the end, I chose a very pretty Barbie-like shade of pink. I recalled seeing this shade in most of Sungmin’s clothing articles yesterday, so I guessed that was his favourite shade. I got a small can of a darker shade of pink as well, for his room door. After getting the paint, I also picked out some pink curtains and bed sheets, as well as a pink doormat for Sungmin. He is going to love his makeover room!

As we were going home, Kyuhyun’s text message came through, carrying good news. He had managed to convince Ms Nooya Kang that I was suffering from a headache so bad that I couldn’t make it to school as much as I wanted to. I was surprised that he managed to convince that old hag, as she was famous for being the strictest teacher who accepted no excuses from her students. I have to admit, Kyuhyun was pretty good at using his charms.

Thinking that I would have to prepare the pork chops for Kyuhyun, I decided to throw a small welcome feast for Sungmin as well. However, when I asked Kyuhyun for Sungmin’s favourite foods, Kyuhyun volunteered to get the ingredients for tonight’s dinner, saying that I would scare people with my alien-like bruise if I were to go to the supermarket. Thus, I sent him a list of the ingredients needed for the pork chops, and reminded him to get Sungmin’s favourite food, as well as some Kimchi for Heechul.

As ajusshi’s van neared our building, a thought popped into my mind. What if Sungmin was already at home? Luckily, the house was still empty when the maintenance ajusshi and I lugged all the stuff upstairs. To play safe, I bolted the front door so even if Sungmin came back, he would not be able to open the door.

Okay, that was mean but I didn’t have another choice!

Ajusshi was very experienced in these kind of things, and we only took 3 hours to paint the all of the walls plus the door. It took us another 1 hour to shift the stuff back to its original place. By 2pm, everything was in its place. After instructing me to put out some dishes of vinegar to help dissipate the odor of the paint, he left me to my own devices.

Just as I went into the kitchen to fetch the vinegar, I felt a sudden shooting pain in my stomach. “Crap, I was so busy with Sungmin’s room that I forgot that I hadn’t had breakfast…” I mumbled to myself as I opened the fridge to get something to it. Suddenly, my phone rang.

“Hello?” I answered as I sipped a glass of milk.

“Are you at home?” Kyuhyun’s irritated voice came from the other side of the phone.

“Yup,”

“Why the hell did you bolt the door? I can’t get in!”

Opps, I had forgotten about the door that I bolted. Putting down my phone and the glass of milk, I ran over to the door and unbolted it in record time. “Sorry, I was doing something,” I grinned as I held the door for the very annoyed Kyuhyun. He shook his head and stepped into the house, carrying bags of groceries from the nearby supermarket and setting them down at the bar top in the kitchen.

“Ooff.. What’s THAT smell?”

“Nothing, I was painting something.”

“As in house paint kind of paint?”

“Yes,” I nodded as I retrieved the contents of the bags. “Honey, kimchi, spaghetti noodles, danhobak, pork cutlets, prawns, scallops, mussels, squids, cheese, milk, more danhobak, prawns again… Did you have to get so much seafood? I’m not preparing a feast for you, you know?”

“YAH! You were the one who asked me to get Sungmin’s favourite food!”

“He likes seafood?”

“… Yup, he… He loves seafood! You should cook like… Cheesy scallops. Stir-fry mussels, seafood pasta and such…”

I looked at Kyuhyun with narrowed eyes, “Why does all of that sounds like your favourite food?”

He gave me a crooked smile, “It’s a coincidence. By the way, he is crazy about danhobak. You should cook something with danhobak, he’ll love it.”

“What about the seafood?”

“Well… He can help me… I MEAN, I can help him finish the seafood! Aish, Heechul likes seafood too!” Kyuhyun answered deviously as he flashed me a 1000-watts smile. I shook my head and continued sorting out the ingredients, “I’m only cooking for four, you know? Was there really such a need to buy so much stuff?”

“You said you wanted to prepare a welcome feast for Sungmin! Anyway, we can keep those that we can’t finish for other days. Speaking of which, where is Sungmin?”

“I have no idea, he was already out when I woke up this morning.”

“I’ll call him,” Kyuhyun said as he walked over to the dining table, taking out his phone. “Eh? What’s this?” came Kyuhyun voice, “Yonni, use this to rub against your bruise, it’ll go away faster. Sungmin.”

“What are you talking about?” I looked up at Kyuhyun, who was holding up a hot water flask. He took off the cap and peeped at the content. Then, he walked over to me and passed the flask to me. I looked in, and there was a hardboiled egg inside!

“Aww… How sweet…” Kyuhyun crooned, “Our Sungmin is so nice to you! Must be the hug that you gave him yester…” I cut him off with a hard backhand to his chest. “Why would I want to rub this against my bruise?” I wondered aloud as I retrieved the egg inside using a long spoon. It was still warm.

“Aigoo… Are you really that dumb? Didn’t you know that using an egg to rub against a bruise would help it to go away faster? Tsk tsk, silly Yonni.” Kyuhyun clicked his tongue a few times.

“In that case why didn’t you tell me that yesterday instead of laughing at me?”

“Cause… You look funnier walking around with the bruise!” He laughed evilly, dodging a kick I sent out at him. He then left me in peace to cook and walked out to the living room to make his call to Sungmin. Apparently, Sungmin had left the house early in the morning to go back to his house to get some things that he forgot to bring here. There was nobody else at his old house that could help him send the things over, and he was already on his way back. He would reach at about 7 plus in the evening.

“Good! Then I won’t have to worry about him spoiling the surprise! Oh my god, I can’t wait to see the expression on his face when he see his new room!” I thought gleefully in my heart as I laid out the ingredients on the table.

I spent the remainder of the afternoon cooking in the kitchen. Kyuhyun was back in his room playing his Star Craft again, leaving me to slog my guts out in the kitchen. I moved back and forth in the kitchen, multi-tasking as I chopped and cooked at the same time.

“KIMCHI FRIED RICE!!!!” Heechul roared once he stepped into the house. He dashed into the kitchen, taking in exaggerated deep breaths of the aroma of the Kimchi fried rice that I was frying. I smiled, “Welcome back bro,”

“What’s the occasion?” Heechul asked as he looked around the messy kitchen.

“We are throwing a welcome feast for Sungmin, Kyuhyun's cousin,”

“Oh! That guy! I met him last night. Aish…” Heechul suddenly whacked me across my head.

“What?! What did I do?!” I whined as I scooped the fried rice onto a big plate.

“He doesn’t even look like me a bit! How can you mistake him for me? Michyeosseo?”

“YAH! Kyuhyun told you that, did he?! This is all his fault!”

“Aish, you should be able to recognize you own brother! What are these?” Heechul asked as he pointed to a pot of yellow sauce, and a smaller pot of yellow soup.

“It’s still stupid-Kyu’s fault!” I complained as I looked over at what Heechul was pointing at. “That’s danhobak cream soup. The other one is my new creation! The sauce for danhobak sausages spaghetti!”

“Is it good?”

“I don’t know, this is my first time cooking it. It smells good though. YAH! THAT’S DISGUSTING!” I scolded Heechul as he dipped a finger into the sauce.

“Not bad, needs to be a little saltier though,” Heechul said as he the sauce off his finger. “I’m going to bathe, call me when dinner’s ready.”

Sungmin came back just as I finished putting the last dish on the table. “Wow! Smells wonderful!” his voice came floating through the screen door.

“Welcome home! What did you leave behind? Why is it so important that you have to go back and get it?” I asked, walking over to the living room.

“Ah… I left my violin, guitar and harmonica behind,” Sungmin answered as he entered through the door, lugging two big carriers on each of his shoulders. He was wearing a pink dress shirt with white pants. “Wow,” I thought to myself as I smiled at him, “He looks really good in pink!” I asked him to put his things down in the living room, saying that the food would not taste good if it got cold. Actually, I just didn’t want him to go into the room yet. It will spoil my surprise!

Sungmin smiled and nodded, leaving his guitar and violin carriers standing against the wall as he went to knock on Kyuhyun and Heechul’s room door. There was a huge spread on the dining table. I almost died while trying to prepare all these food. There were baked cheese scallops, black pepper stir-fry prawns and mussels with squids, broiled ginseng prawns, seafood omelet, kimchi fried rice, honey glazed pork chops, and most importantly, the danhobak soup and spaghetti.

I literally saw the boys eyes glazed over as they each saw their favourite foods. We had a wonderful dinner chatting and joking away, and soon, all the plates were empty. Towards the end of dinner, Heechul made an announcement.

“My band would be having a mini-concert at the pub that I am working at next week. I want all three of you to come and see me shine on stage!” Heechul said as he jumped onto the dining chair, strumming an air guitar. We all laughed. Heechul had formed a small rock band in his college that consists of just two people. He was the drummer and rapper of the band while the other guy was the vocalist and the guitarist. He had always said that if Ryeowook comes and join us in the city, he wants him to join his band, and then together they can rock the world. I knew that the band was Heechul’s proudest achievement, thus I agreed immediately. To my surprise, Kyuhyun and Sungmin also readily agreed to go and support Heechul. Heechul was extremely happy that we were all going, and he ran off to his room, saying that he wanted to tell his band mate that his family was going to support him.

Sungmin was the only kind person who volunteered to help me wash up the dishes. Kyuhyun, the one without any conscience, ran off to his room straight after dinner, saying that he had an assignment that he needed to finish. I bet his ‘assignment’ was 100% on Star Craft.

“How did you know I like danhobak?” Sungmin asked as we stood side by side at the sink, with him washing the dishes and me drying them up.

“Kyuhyun told me so,”

“So… You cooked it specially for me?”

“It’s a welcome feast for you, of course I cooked it specially for you! Babo!” I chided jokingly as I reached up to put the dishes onto the dish rack above the sink. “I hope it wasn’t too horrible?”

“It was really delicious, I loved it! Next time I’ll cook my variation of the danhobak spaghetti and soup for you okay?” Sungmin was trying to hide the smile that was coming onto his face.

‘Why are you smiling like that?” I asked suspiciously. He shook his head as he bit the corners of his lips, trying to hold back the smile that was slowly creeping out. I suddenly remembered about his room, and I gave him a huge smile as I said, “Sungmin ah, I have a surprise for you!”

“EH? For me?” He exclaimed. I burst out laughing at the shocked expression that was on his face when he jerked up his head and looked at me.

“Haha! Yup! It’s in your room!”

“Okay.” He nodded as he started washing the dishes at top speed, face scrunched up a little in concentration. “What are you doing?” I asked, puzzled by his sudden increase in pace. He answered without looking up, “I want to faster finish washing these dishes so I can get to my surprise!”

I giggled as I resumed drying the dishes. His face was really cute as he looked like a little kid trying to figure out how to play with a new toy. I could hardly hide the excitement in my heart. I already had a mental image of Sungmin jumping up in joy after seeing his room being filled with his favourite colour.

Barbie pink everywhere, from the walls to the curtains to the bed sheets!

We finished washing up in another 10 minutes, and Sungmin ran over to his room right after he dried up his hands. I ran after him, I wanted to see his first reaction at seeing his new room! When he saw his pink room door, he turned and looked at me with a confused look on his face. I laughed, “Yup, I painted it pink! Faster, open the door!”

He placed his hands on the doorknob and slowly turned. My heartbeat was increasing bin multiples of ten for every millimetres that the door inched opened.

One inch…

Two inches...

Finally, the door opened fully.

Then when Sungmin the lights…
