Ashes to ashes. Dust to dust. Vampires to...?

Predator on the Prowl

One moment Irene was swooning over Wendy’s domesticity as she cleaned the vampire’s house; the next moment she felt a wave of nausea sweep through her body. The brunette felt dizzy and disorientated and she wasn’t sure whether it was the sunlight that made her feel that way or something she drank.

The last time the vampire felt like she had the drunken spins and vertigo was when she had recently become a vampire and experimented by having a blood tasting of all RhD positive and RhD negative blood types, A, B, AB and O.

“This is why they say don’t leave drinks unattended or accept them from strangers. Did Wendy tamper with my drink?” Irene thought in disbelief, wanting to interrogate Wendy. The brunette recalled having drunk the chilled blood that Wendy thoughtfully gave her and realized that Wendy had something to do with her sudden nausea. Suddenly, everything went black – Irene had stopped consciously breathing.

Wendy heard something crash near the door and headed outside to investigate the disturbance. She saw Irene sprawled across the “Welcome” doormat. “What a welcome indeed,” Wendy fretted. She scooped up the innocent-looking, yet heavy, vampire and carried her towards her room. “For someone on a liquid diet, she’s still so heavy.” Wendy chuckled to herself and placed the vampire down on the bed.

“Did I accidently kill her?” Wendy thought anxiously. Wendy placed her hand on the left side of Irene’s chest before remembering that vampires don’t have a pulse. She let her hand linger a little bit longer on Irene’s cold chest, contemplating what to do. “Technically Irene is dead already but how would I actually know if she is dead, dead?” Wendy decided that it would be best to stay next to the vampire, just until she wakes up.

Irene felt something warm next to her and squinted her eyes open and was surprised to see Wendy sleeping next to her. “What happened? Why is Wendy in my bed?” Irene thought to herself, trying to put the puzzle pieces together. A part of Irene wanted chuck Wendy out of the house after recalling the drink spiking incident. Another part of Irene felt human-like again and wanted to remain snuggled up next to Wendy.

“Wendy could have unintentionally caused the death of one of my human blood donors, in the event of them needing a quick blood transfusion. What was she thinking when she acted like a bartender and messed around with my emergency blood supplies? She could have caused me to have blood poisoning or even my death. Luckily fate was on my side and I did not die but maybe I should let Wendy think otherwise.” Irene smirked as she wickedly thought of a way to rattle Wendy.

Irene noticed that Wendy was still deep asleep and realised that she can stage her death. “Ashes to ashes. Dust to dust. What happened to vampires? Vampires to bats?” Irene contemplated buying a real bat from one of the hidden, local wet markets but immediately dismissed that thought as she did not want to support people who disregard the valuable ecological service that bats offer.

A quick trip to the store and Irene had a realistic-looking bat, fake blood as well as a voice recorder.  By the time Irene arrived back home, Wendy was still fast asleep and Irene was ready to put her plan into action. The vampire recorded a message to wake Wendy up and scare her. The brunette positioned the bat face-down onto her newly blood smeared pillow, and quickly hit the play button before hiding it behind the pillow. Irene fled quietly outside the house, eager to video and watch Wendy’s reaction through her bedroom window.

Wendy heard soft moans, followed by gasping breathy sounds and sprang awake. She was shocked to see the bat and even more shaken to hear Irene’s desperate, soft voice. “He-Help me. Blo-Blood bag. Yo-Your fault.” The guilt ate away Wendy and she burst out in tears. “I’m sorry Irene. I even started liking you and I wish I was more open about my feelings earlier. I hope you can forgive what I’m going to do next.”

Irene heard everything outside but decided it would be for the best if she no longer existed in Wendy’s life. Irene was about to hide but made her presence known when she saw Wendy escape the house.

“What the hell, Wendy. How could you just leave the bat … leave me dead in the house! You’re not going anywhere. The least you can do is owe me an explanation.”
