The Call
Boris Johnson glances at the clock and grumbles to himself. He's got a meeting on the docket that has no information attached to it, which means it's with the new Minister for Magic.
He hasn't met the woman yet, but after the incident a few days ago he's not surprised that she's coming. He had, however, thought she'd take a little longer to reach out, based on his past experience with that lot. He'd certainly hoped she'd take a little longer - the Brexit stalemate and upcoming elections are occupying most of his time, not to mention this recent magic disaster. There's no way she's coming over two days later to ease his already piled-high burdens, that much is certain.
She arrives exactly on time, and Boris has to shift slightly so soot from the fireplace doesn't land on his shoe.
The woman in front of him doesn't look very impressive - frizzy brown hair barely contained in a ponytail and severe black robes - but looks can be deceiving. If she was deemed worthy to follow Kingsley there must be something to her.
"Good afternoon prime minister, I hope you're managing to be well, despite circumstances." The woman says, holding out her hand, which Boris shakes a bit loosely.
"Hermione Granger." She adds once her hand has been released. "I know you're already under a lot of pressure Mr. Johnson, but we in the wizarding world are dedicated to making this transition as painless as possible for both parties involved."
Boris blanches. "Transition? Can't you lot just do you magic hoodoo and get rid of it? Britain is under enough pressure as it stands without you lot getting your stuff mixed in with ours."
Minister Granger frowns. "I'm afraid the combination of the global scale and the accessibility of technology these days has moved this far beyond what we might have been able to conceal." She says briskly. "And so our Ministry will be starting an initiative to bring the Muggle and wizarding worlds together."
"Is that even possible?" Boris grumbles, already thinking about how much more work this is going to give him. He barely sleeps as is, now he'll have to go without entirely.
Minister Granger sniffs. "It's been done before, technically. We went into hiding in the Middle Ages, but prior to that the magic and non-magical interacted with each other rather regularly. Just look at the old myths from before the common era." She points out. "We're already putting together a team on our end, so you'll have minimal paperwork. It is our world trying to join yours, so most of the administrative headaches will be on my desk, if that helps. I know you're under a lot of pressure right now and the last thing I want is to add to that."
It does help, but Boris knows she wouldn't be here if none of that headache was headed his way. "So what do you need?" He asks, perhaps a bit impatiently but she'd come on very short notice and he has a lot of other things to accomplish today.
Granger nods. "All we need right now is for you to inform your cabinet that we are looking for Muggles to join our Initiative. We feel this process will be much easier for both sides if there are people representing them both."
Boris sighs. That's not too much, and he can pass it off to someone else. So he nods. "Right, easily doable, I'll have the word out by tonight. Anything else?"
Granger shakes her head. "Your cooperation is appreciated as always Prime Minister." She says formally. "I'm sure I'll be seeing you quite soon to keep you appraised of the situation." And with a quick bow she's gone, vanished into the air with a pop that hurts his ears.
Boris sits alone in his office for a long moment before heaving a sigh and pressing his intercom. "Peter, I need you to get me the Head of the Magical Liaison Division. Send her to my office within the next hour."
"Right away sir." Peter Hill's voice responds immediately, and Boris allows a faint smile. Theresa had known what she was doing hiring this one, he's bright and efficient - Boris never has to worry if Peter is on the job.
Twenty minutes later the speaker crackels again. "Cadi Morgan is ready to see you sir, whenever you're available." Peter says briskly.
"Send her in." Boris quickly replies, pushing the files he'd been reading aside for the moment. The quicker he tells Morgan what to do the quicker he can stop thinking about it and get back to what his England needs.
Cadi Morgan is a woman pushing fifty and she's not afraid to let it show. However, despite the wrinkles and the grey streaks, she's still a very attractive woman, and Boris never minds when he needs to speak with her.
"Mrs. Morgan, I appreciate the hasty response." He greets her, standing to shake her hand.
Morgan gives him a quick shake before her hands retreat behind her back. "I assumed this would have to do with the incident two days ago. Has Minister Granger spoken with you about what our next steps should be?" She asks, all business as usual.
Boris nods. "They're setting up some sort of team that's going to organize the details and try to ease the transition as much as possible - dealing with the media, considering the legalities and what not. She asked me to put out the word that they want Muggles on the team as well, so if you don't mind I'd like if you took point on that."
Morgan nods, breaking into a smile. "With pleasure Prime Minister." She says cheerfully. "I'll get on that right away."
Boris nods his thanks and she hurries out of the room to get started.
This year is going to be an absolute headache, he can already tell.
A/N ; And there we have it, the final teaser! Which means *blows trumpet* next week we'll get to see who's hired! I'm so excited to get this story started, and I hope you all are ready for a wild ride - this trilogy is going out with a bang! ^^
