II

Life Will Change

"Breathe, Wendy. Breathe. This isn't your first rodeo..."

"You talk to yourself often?"

Wendy flinched at Seulgi's offhand comment.

"No, not really."

"Good. Please stop, it's distracting me."

"...Okay, I'm sorry."

Seulgi glanced over at Wendy again. She smirked.

"What a nice girl. I'd expect a murderer to kick up a fuss and start swearing at me but you're not. How very interesting."

"It's because I'm not a murderer."

Seulgi just shrugged and went back to looking over the case file. Wendy tried to get a peek at what was written on it, but Seulgi caught what she was doing and slammed the file shut.

"Eyes forward."

Wendy pouted and slumped in her seat.

"You're mean."

Seulgi didn't reply.

The rest of the ride to the police station was quiet. The noisiest thing in the car was Wendy's thoughts, which were racing with worries. Did Yeri make it back home safe? If she did, how was she? Was she still shocked? Was she crying? Did she tell Mr. and Mrs. Choi? There was a sinking feeling within Wendy's stomach, one not different from when she saw the corpse for the first time. It was a feeling of despair, of sorrow.

Wendy began gripping the sides of the car. Her heart rate was going through the roof.

"Calm yourself, we're at the station. See you in the interrogation room."

Seulgi left the car, leaving Wendy to be ushered into the police station by the other officers in the car.

This wasn't Wendy's first time at the police station, but it was the first time she was going further than the front desk. The officer sitting at the reception desk shook his head upon seeing Wendy enter, familiar with the girl now after multiple visits. Wendy just put her head down and let the police officers guide her to her destination. She didn't want to see all those uniforms staring holes at her, pricking her with their judgmental eyes.

She wandered from corridor to corridor, seeing nothing but marble and black shoes as she finally came to a stop at the front of a door.

"Here's your stop."

Wendy was escorted into the room and handcuffed to the chair by the policemen before being left alone in the room. She finally lifted her head.

The interrogation room was about what she expected. Nothing but pure grey, with a camera at the top corner of the room, a singular light above the table in front of her and a fan that wasn't doing its job very well behind her.

Despite her circumstances, Wendy had managed to calm herself. She knew she was innocent. All she would have to do is answer the questions that were given to her truthfully. Detective Seulgi seemed like a pretty straightforward cop, so she'd probably appreciate Wendy giving her the answers straight. She finally broke a smile.

"I'm coming back to you, Yeri."

The interrogation door opened. Wendy sat up straight and cleared , expecting to see the detective that was sat beside her earlier to come strolling in front of her, trench coat a little damp from the slight drizzle outside, a cup of coffee in her hand and that same blank expression she had in the car. She took a deep breath.

"What a sight, seeing you in handcuffs. I just wish they were raised over your head instead."

Wendy felt an electric current crackle within her body. That wasn't the voice of Detective Seulgi.

"Remember what I said?"

That voice was getting closer, and Wendy now felt a hand wrap around her waist and go underneath her shirt. The hand was cold as ice.

"Park Sooyoung, it's a name you'll be hearing for a long time."

Wendy could feel the vixen's warm breath on her neck. The way her words rolled off her tongue was like that of a snake's fangs piercing your skin. A slight nibble of Wendy's ear was enough to send the young girl quaking, and the officer loved every bit of it.

"Look at the way your body shakes... almost makes me want to risk it all, right here, right now..."

Wendy's breathing was hitched.

"Pl-please stop..."

Sooyoung's laughter rang through the small room. It was boisterous, like that of a child's. It didn't suit her one bit.

"I love it when pretty little things like you beg," Sooyoung Wendy's cheek, goosebumps rising from all over Wendy's body upon feeling that sensation on her skin.

The sound of heels clacking now filled the room. That cursed face Wendy had no intention of seeing was now right in front of her, smirking like a Chesire cat. She wasn't even using the seat, rather she laid down on the table and allowed her long legs to sprawl all over the place. Wendy didn't dare look her in the eye.

"Son Wendy. Listen here. I know for a fact that you're innocent."

Wendy's ears perked up.

"I know that you're a pure, caring little angel who just wanted to accompany her little sister to a dark and dangerous place to make sure that she was okay like any good unnie would do."

Wendy felt her heart rate stabilize a little.

"Unfortunately, Miss Wendy, even though you're such a great young woman, God has blessed you with  luck."

Wendy looked up.

"What?"

Sooyoung grinned viciously. She grabbed Wendy's chin, yanking her forward, Wendy yelping like a puppy would as a result.

"Poor little girl. You see, I don't give a if you're innocent or not."

"What?"

"Oh if only you could see the fear that's in your eyes. You know what, why don't you?"

Joy spun Wendy's head around to the one-way mirror behind her. Sooyoung was right. In her own reflection, Wendy's face was as pale as the snow. Her eyes were wide and almost bulging, and the quivering of her lip certainly wasn't helping.

"Oh, I love it. I love that look so much."

Sooyoung spun Wendy back around again. The twenty-year-old was on the verge of tears.

"What... do you want from me?"

"Honestly? A good ."

Wendy cringed at the crude language. Sooyoung cackled.

"But this isn't about what I want, Son Wendy. It's about the Godfather."

"The Godfather?"

"Exactly. I'm not a good cop, Wendy. Not all. I'm as filthy, disgusting as a floating turd in the sewers. I'm as despicable a human you could possibly meet. I'm not your typical captain of the precinct, Wendy."

"I'm a full-fledged member of the number one crime family in Korea, the Bae Family. That name ring a bell?"

Wendy didn't even have to think before that image popped in her head once again. She grimaced, and Sooyoung's smile grew even wider.

"You're a clever girl. I'm sure you understand your situation?"

"You're ed, Son Wendy."

"... What's stopping me from telling the other police about you?"

", you think they're gonna listen to the primary suspect instead of the ing captain of the whole precinct? Come on, Wendy-ah."

Wendy bit her lip.

"Please... I'm just a twenty-year-old girl trying to live a normal life. I have a younger sister. I can't leave her all alone."

Tears began to finally spill out of Wendy's eyes. Her whole body was quivering.

Sooyoung stared nonchalantly.

"I need to take care of her. Please. I can't die now."

Wendy heard Sooyoung let out a loud sigh.

"... Aren't you a ing sob story?"

Wendy shook her head.

"I'm not. I just want to take care of my sister."

Sooyoung raised an eyebrow.

"... ing hell. A cutie like you dying so young would be a waste anyway."

"I can spare your life."

"Thank-"

"But you're not getting away scot-free. I need to save my own skin too."

Wendy's rejoice would have to be put on hold. She glanced at Sooyoung, who was now facing the wall, her hands on her hips.

"You'll be alive, but after what I tell you to do, I don't know if you'll want to be anymore."

"I'll do anything. I just want to see my sister again."

Sooyoung turned back to face Wendy, her face showing a faint hint of annoyance. She sat back down at the table, wrapping her hand around Wendy's neck and pulling her closer. Her gaze was strong, powerful, but Wendy stared right back. She needed to show her will, show Sooyoung that she was serious.

"I'll do anything," Wendy said. Her voice was soft but her tone was strong. Sooyoung smirked.

"Even work for the Bae Family?"

Wendy didn't flinch.

"Fine by me."

Sooyoung snorted.

"Enjoy that confidence that you have now. It'll disappear quick, trust me."

Sooyoung let go of Wendy. She leaned against the wall, resting her legs on Wendy's thighs. Her heels were gently caressing Wendy's legs, which was making the young girl very uncomfortable. Sooyoung just kept smiling.

"You're so ing cute."

"Thanks."

Sooyoung cackled.

"Alright sweetie, here's the debrief. I'll get rid of the evidence that I falsely planted to convict you-"

Wendy shot Sooyoung a glare. The lady shrugged.

"Then your name will be clear. After that, you'll be under the Bae Family's control for the rest of your life. Sounds good right?"

"Not at all."

"Well, it's either that or you're ing dead. Which one would you prefer, babe?"

Wendy's shoulders drooped.

"Good girl. Now, let me go clear your name for you. So stay put and look pretty, okay?"

Sooyoung tried to plant another kiss on Wendy's cheek, much to her annoyance, pulling away as far as she could. Sooyoung settled for a light slap on the cheek instead.

"Cutie."

Sooyoung walked out of the room. Wendy sat there, staring blankly at the wall in front of her. What was her life going to become? A member of organized crime? There was no way that she would be able to survive that kind of life. Sooyoung had sentenced her to death either way. She laid her head on the table Sooyoung was just sitting on, letting out the breath she had been holding this whole time.

"What now..."

The door of the room opened once again. Wendy sighed.

"Am I free yet?"

"Not quite, Miss Son. Sit up, I need to speak to you."

Wendy leaped up in her seat. There she was, the woman she was hoping to see in the first place. That slightly damp trench coat, the cup of coffee, that blank expression.

"De-detective Seulgi..."

"You're really in deep , Miss Son, just not the kind of I thought you'd be in."

Wendy blinked.

"Wait, how did you know?"

"Oh please, I'm not an amateur. I've got eyes and ears everywhere, even in this room. I heard everything."

Seulgi pointed at the fan behind Wendy.

"Korean Police can't be bothered to maintain this room, so I took advantage of that."

Wendy grinned.

"So you know-"

"Yes. You're innocent. Trust the Seoul Police to have a rat as vicious as her in their ranks."

Wendy chuckled. She felt a sudden rush of immense joy she hadn't been able to feel almost the entire day.

"Can you get me out of this, Detective Seulgi?"

"I'm afraid not."

Wendy felt her mood plummet back down to Earth again.

"I need you, Wendy. This situation is unfortunate for you, but you can turn it into something great."

"How so?"

Seulgi leaned forward, her voice dropping to a whisper.

"Just as Sooyoung is a rat within the police, you'll be a rat inside the Bae Family."

Wendy's eyes widened.

"I can ensure your safety. I'm not some run of the mill detective from the Korean Police. I know what I'm doing."

Seulgi looked at her watch.

"Park's going to be back soon."

Seulgi slipped a card inside Wendy's pocket before stepping towards the door. She turned back to Wendy once more.

"You can trust me, Miss Son. See you soon."

Seulgi left the room, the door closing gently behind her.

Within a minute, that door was open again.

Sooyoung strolled into the room, that arrogant smirk still on her face. However, Wendy had one on her face too.

"What are you smiling about?"

"I'm going to be free."

Sooyoung shook her head, unlocking the handcuffs around Wendy's wrist, much to the innocent girl's relief.

"I put in a good word for you. You've got one day to enjoy your freedom before you start working for us. Enjoy your next 24 hours. I'll be seeing you real soon, Wendy."

Sooyoung opened the door to the interrogation room, pointing outside. Ignoring Sooyoung's eyes, she left the room. Her legs were filled with adrenaline. She made her way out of the police station in record time, standing at the entrance of the police station. She checked her pockets and realized she didn't have her wallet.

"Shucks. Guess I'm walking."

Just as she took one step forward, a taxi pulled up in front of her.

"Taxi for Miss Son Wendy? Someone called me to come and get you."

Wendy had a feeling who had called the cab. She thanked the driver and climbed into the backseat, and the taxi started moving.

She pulled out the card from her pocket.

"Tomorrow, 9 am, the McDonalds at Itaewon.

P.S. You're welcome for the cab."

Wendy smiled.

"Thanks, Detective Seulgi."

Chapter 9: it's been quite a few years and i don't know if this story will be continued but just wanted to say it's an amazing one, like the plot is really insane. i was really invested in seeing joygi here but...anyways i don't trust seulgi fully yet there could be some other reason she's doing this.

i hope you're doing well, thanks for writing!
