Love Maze

Jungkook hated wearing suits.

They made him feel itchy and uncomfortable. As a matter of fact the suit he was wearing at the moment was giving him a huge wedgie. But he couldn’t adjust himself or he’d just look like an idiot in front of all these people. He scowled as he glanced around at all the guests in their fancy suits and dresses, how the hell did he even end up here anyway? One minute he was in his apartment eating ramen and playing video games, then the next he was at a formal party standing in the corner of the room alone drinking wine.

It was all Jin’s fault.

“If you’re planning to become a personal assistant at a clothing company, then you need to change your ways! Stop locking yourself in your apartment and go socialize with people, go on a shopping spree or something!” He imitated him underneath his breath.

Jungkook hated admitting that he was right, but he was. He moved to Seoul in hopes of starting fresh, stepping outside the lines and trying something new. He thought starting off as a personal assistant for a temporary job wouldn’t be too bad. How hard could it be? Unfortunately he didn’t put into consideration who he might be working for. He’d successfully come across a job, but it was for the CEO of one of the biggest designer brands in Seoul.

He had his job interview in a few days and it was only starting to settle in now how unprepared he was for it. But that was the reason why he moved there in the first place, to embrace that feeling of doubt. His mom always told him that if he was ever feeling doubtful, then that meant he had room to work hard and get stronger in his life. And that’s exactly what he wanted, to be stronger and more cool.

But at the moment, that plan wasn’t really working out.

Jin had dragged him to this party so he could get out of his apartment, but he left him stranded only a few minutes later to catch up with some other friends. He tried to invite him along though, but he said he’d just stay behind to mingle elsewhere. He thought he’d only get in his way if he went with them. Jungkook was surprised at how many people knew Jin there, but he guessed that was what happened when you were the son of one of the most popular and respected actors in Korea.

Jungkook tugged at his collar, feeling hot all of a sudden. Jin had given him the suit as a quick change, but it was way too small for him. He needed to go shopping for some better clothes before his interview, but he was a bit short on money. He his lips and took another sip of his wine. God, why was he so awkward? The whole point of going there was to broaden his horizons and talk to new people. So why couldn’t he bring himself to do it?

He gave his neck a quick tilt. He was way too tense, he needed to loosen up a little bit. If he wasn’t so focused on his nerves, maybe he’d be able to talk to people easier. Some more alcohol would do the trick. His mind was always a lot more at ease when he was a little drunk.

Jungkook poured himself a few more glasses and downed them quickly. His head turned cloudy after awhile and he was starting to feel a bit nauseous. But he wasn’t as nervous anymore, that was exactly what he wanted.

“Okayss,” He slurred and adjusted his blazer confidently. “Less gooo.”

He turned away from the beverage table and eyed the crowd of people again. A few of them were swaying happily to the orchestra music, dancing with their partners. He was a pretty good dancer, he should join them as well.

Jungkook stumbled towards them and gave a sloppy grin when he finally reached the group. “Mind if I dance as well?”

A man who was swaying slowly with a pretty girl, stopped and gave him a strange look. “Uh, sure?”

Jungkook broke out in b-boy moves then and began spinning and krumping to the beat of the song. Everyone glanced over weirdly at him, wondering why he was dancing so chaotically. But he could care less, he was enjoying himself.

“Uh, uh.” He went down onto the floor and kicked his legs up, but his foot accidentally hit the girl’s ankle.

“Ow!” She hissed. “Watch what you’re doing!”

“Sorry geez, unclench you’ll be alright.” He rolled his eyes. Why were girls always so dramatic?

The man stepped in front of her. “Hey, watch how you speak to her.”

“Tell your girl to chill out and maybe I will. It was just an accident.” He huffed and continued dancing.

“You know what, let’s just go.” The man took her hand and tried to lead her away, but Jungkook blocked their path.

“Oh come on don’t be mad, keep dancing with me.” He swung his hips.

“Please move out of our way.”

“Seriously? Stop being such a party pooper-”

“Is everything alright over here?” A cold voice interrupted them then.

Jungkook glanced over and noticed it was a young man. He was glaring at him and had a dark expression on his face, but he was really handsome nonetheless. Except just by how his blonde hair was slicked back and the sharp black suit he wore, Jungkook could tell he was uptight, rich, and probably spoiled.

“Yo man wassup?” Jungkook tried to do a handshake with him but he just looked down at his hand in disgust.

“We’re very sorry for the the disturbance Taehyung.” The man bowed quickly at him. “I think this man might be drunk which is why he’s acting so erratically. He reeks of alcohol.”

Taehyung boredly glanced Jungkook up and down. “You’re disturbing the guests here with your immature behaviour. Do I need to call someone to you out?”

He scoffed. “What? Of course not, I’m just having fun? Isn’t that what parties are for?”

“This isn’t some college party, this is a formal event-”

Jungkook grabbed his arm and pulled him further onto the dance floor. “Why the hell are you so uptight? Come on, dance with me and have some fun man!”

Taehyung glared at him. “Hey, take your hands off me!”

He ignored him and began swaying to the music, gripping his arm and waist tightly.

“Let go of me or I’m calling the police! I’ll have you charged for harassment!” He hissed.

“Harassment for dancing? That’s idiotic.”

Taehyung stepped backwards abruptly and Jungkook moved forward to keep up with him, but their feet accidentally snagged each other. They stumbled and crashed to the floor, Jungkook falling onto Taehyung’s chest.

His gaze was venomous now. Damn, if looks could kill. “You little-”

It all came up before he could react.

“Heeurrgghhh!” He vomited all the alcohol and ramen he ingested before onto Taehyung’s suit.

Everyone gasped loudly around them, looking down at the mess in disgust and horror.

Taehyung looked shell-shocked for a second. But then glared up at Jungkook with burning hatred.

He wiped the back of his mouth slowly and then gave an apologetic smile.

“Um, I’m sorry?”

**

4 days later

“I think I’d be good for this job because I’m a very hard worker...” Jungkook mumbled to himself as he quickly reviewed his notes. The train jolted suddenly and a woman’s bag hit into his papers, crumpling them slightly. He gave her a dirty look and then sighed, running a hand through his hair. He was so stressed out, and it didn’t help that this train was packed with so many people heading to work and school. He could barely hear himself think.

Jungkook pressed down his shirt slowly, trying to make sure there were no creases or wrinkles. He was wearing a simple black button down long sleeve with black shoes and pants as well. He made sure to buy decent but comfortable clothing, so that he wouldn’t have to suffer wearing a tight suit again. But he still couldn’t help but think his style wasn’t fashionable enough for where he was considering working. If he got the job, they’d probably inform him about the exact dress code anyways so maybe he shouldn’t worry until then.

He smirked. Well that was if he actually got the job, and at this rate he really didn’t know if he would.

“Stop,” He whispered firmly. “Stay positive.”

His phone buzzed in his pocket then and he pulled it out slowly.

“Hey,” He cradled it between his shoulder and ear as he started reviewing again.

“Good morning, are you nervous?” Jin asked.

“Obviously.”

He chuckled. “Yeah sorry, that was a dumb question. I was just calling to make sure you weren’t doing anything stupid before your interview. You know, like getting drunk.”

Jungkook grimaced as he remembered being dragged out of the party by Jin after the embarrassing mess he created. He didn’t know what the hell he was thinking, getting drunk to ease his nerves was possibly the dumbest decision he ever made. But everything wasn’t supposed to go downhill like that, he just wanted to make it easier for himself to interact with people. Except he just ended up vomiting on someone named Taehyung and getting everyone else pissed off. Why did everything always go wrong for him?

“Trust me, that’s never happening again. The only place I’m ever even considering getting drunk at again is my apartment so I can make a fool outta myself in private.” He shook his head.

“I can’t even stress how lucky you were that I’m actually close with some of the people there so I could ease the situation a little.”

Jungkook laughed. “I still can’t thank you enough for saving my . I’ll take you out somewhere to eat later to show my gratitude.”

“Awesome, I know a nice barbeque place in the city we can go to. The workers there love me, they’re always giving me discounts.” He boasted.

“Must be nice.” Jungkook still had no idea how he even managed to become friends with someone like Jin. They first met each other in middle school and somehow hit it off even though they were complete opposites. But Jin eventually had to move to Seoul to live with his dad in high school after his parents got a divorce, except they still kept in contact and stayed close. Even though he was pretty high maintenance sometimes, Jungkook was thankful that he had him as a guide to get used to the city when he moved there as well. Although dragging him to rich people parties only a few days into his stay, probably wasn’t the best move on his part.

“Anyways, I hope you do amazing with your job interview. Don’t be nervous okay? I’m sure they’ll like you. You’re a funny guy.” Jin tried to encourage him but it wasn’t really working. “What’s the company called that you’re going to again? I know you told me once, but I can’t remember.”

“Ah, wait a sec.” Jungkook flipped through his notes quickly, trying to find the hiring notice he’d printed off before. “Violetta, it’s a pretty popular brand in Seoul.”

“Violetta,” He hummed. “It sounds familiar.”

“Knowing how much you like to shop, you’ve probably heard about it before.” The train jolted again and Jungkook glanced up as a voice came over the intercom.

“Seoul train passengers, we’ll be arriving at your destination in two minutes-”

“No...There’s something else...The head of the company he...Wait, holy Jungkook-” A few passengers began moving forward to make their way towards the exit then. The commotion was starting to get louder and he was having trouble hearing. He figured he should probably get ready as well so he didn’t get trampled trying to leave.

He picked up his things. “Jin I’m gonna have to call you back later, the train is stopping and I have to get off soon.”

“Wait-”

The same woman’s bag knocked into his hand again and he accidentally hung up the phone.

“Seriously?” He groaned and stood up. He needed to get out of there before he lost his mind.

The train eventually stopped and everyone filed out. He breathed a loud sigh of relief when he stepped onto the tarmac, making his way towards the exit of the station. This commute was torture, he needed to invest in a car sooner than later.

Jungkook walked a few blocks down towards the company, feeling thankful that it was close by. He admired the street vendors and diverse people around him, vehicles swerving through the roads that weaved in and out of large buildings towering above his head. There was so much happening at once, almost felt like if he let his mind slip for a second he’d get into an inescapable maze. The commotion overwhelmed him, but it also prepared him at the same time. Once he got used to this craziness, he’d have no problems facing everything else.

“Hoddeok for the handsome young man?” One of the street vendors suddenly shoved the pancake into his face.

“Uh, thank you.” Jungkook bowed quickly. He wasn’t really hungry but he’d feel rude if he refused. He took the food and handed him some money, then kept walking. The syrup dribbled down his chin as he inhaled the pastry quickly, but before he could stop it it dripped onto his shirt.

“!” He hissed. He noticed he was close to the company, there must be a washroom inside where he could clean off his shirt quickly before the interview. Jungkook ran towards the building and stumbled through the glass doors, spotting the bathroom sign immediately. He pulled off his shirt frantically as soon as he raced in, placing a little bit of water over the spill. He used a few napkins that came with the pancake to dab out the syrup, but it was no use. The stain just looked worse than it did before.

“Ughhh,” He groaned loudly and put his hands on his head in distress. Why did this have to happen to him now of all times? What the was he gonna do?

The toilet flushed suddenly and the stall creaked open behind him. He glanced back and saw a man with a small, but elegant frame striding towards him. The faded blue denim outfit he wore made him look like a whole model. Jungkook felt like an idiot standing shirtless in front of him.

The man bent over to inspect himself in the mirror, running a hand through his grey hair a few times to fix it. Once he was done he stood up straight again and glanced at Jungkook, eyeing him up and down.

“Are you okay?” His voice was light and airy. Jungkook couldn’t take his eyes off his red, plump lips.

He looked away quickly. “Ah, yeah I’m fine. I just had a little accident that’s all.”

“Yeah, I could hear you freaking out a few seconds ago.”

He blushed in embarrassment.

The man crossed his arms. “Are you by any chance here for the job interviews taking place today? I know Mr. Kim is looking for a new personal assistant.”

He nodded. “Y-Yeah, you hit the nail right on the head.”

“Well,” He glanced down at his shirt. “Good thing I caught you then, because if you went into the interview wearing that shirt he’d turn you down immediately. The designer of it is a major rival to Violetta and Mr. Kim hates him, these are things you should know if you’re looking to work here.”

Jungkook mentally face palmed. How could he be such an idiot? Now he was thankful that the syrup spilled all over it.

“You can wear any other brand, just not that one. You’re lucky that I’m here, thankfully I have an extra shirt you can wear. I always bring one just in case.” He reached into his bag and pulled out a neatly folded top that had a faded floral pattern. “This is from Violetta’s latest collection. If they see you with this on, they’ll definitely be impressed.”

“Thank you so much.” Jungkook bowed quickly, feeling extremely grateful as he took the shirt. He slipped it on carefully and looked it over in the mirror. It fit him really well, he couldn’t believe how perfect it was.

“No problem, it looks really nice on you.” The man smiled. He reached forward and ran his hand suddenly through Jungkook’s hair, catching him off guard. He was really close and he smelled like flowers and honey. “I was thinking you’d look really good with your hair out of your face and I was right, you should show off your eyebrows and forehead more often. It makes you look ier.”

Jungkook could feel his face burning up. “Ah, okay thanks for the tip.”

He cocked his head at him curiously. “What’s your name by the way?”

“Jeon Jeongguk, but you can just call me Jungkook.”

“Okay, my name’s Park Jimin.”

He thought the name suited him perfectly, he didn’t know why. “Do you work here as well?”

“Not technically, I’m actually a model. I was booked to walk in Violetta’s upcoming fashion show for their fall collection. So I’m here for a fitting today.” Jimin smiled fondly to himself. “I’ve been booked here quite a few times actually, I think Mr. Kim likes me.”

Mr. Kim. He kept mentioning him, that was really the man Jungkook would be working for if he got the job. He wondered what kind of person he was. He instinctively glanced down at his phone and noticed the time. “Oh god I completely lost track because of everything. My interview starts in thirty minutes, I need to figure out where I’m going-”

“Third floor, room 125. That’s his office, I’m pretty sure he’ll be holding all interviews in there. The elevators are close by as well, you’ll see them as soon as you walk out.” Jimin offered and he sighed in relief.

“Seriously, I can’t thank you enough for helping me. I’d probably be in big trouble right now if it weren’t for you”

He chuckled softly. “Don’t worry about it, I know how stressful these kinds of things can be. But if you really want to thank me, we should go out to dinner sometime and get to know each other better. You can return the shirt to me when we meet up again as well.”

Jungkook felt flattered. Why would he want to get to know him of all people better? He wasn’t even that interesting. Jimin handed him his phone number and then bowed. “Okay, I have to head back now and you need to get going too, so text me later. I hope you’re interview goes well, Mr. Kim can be a bit hostile at first but once he warms up to you he’s really sweet. So don’t be scared okay? I’ll see you soon.”

“O-Okay, thanks again.” He smiled and watched him leave. Jungkook turned back towards the mirror once he was gone and gave his reflection a firm look. He felt a lot more confident now after that encounter. Nothing would get in his way, he would get through that interview successfully no matter what and get the job too.

“Let’s go.” He whispered.

**

Jungkook reached his office a few minutes later and sat down in one of the chairs in the small waiting room outside. A few other people were already there practicing and reviewing, they probably had their interviews after him. Jungkook checked them out quickly, almost all of them were attractive men and women who looked like they just stepped off a runway. He wondered what he looked like to them, probably average. But he looked a lot better today than he usually did-

The door creaked open and a woman ushered out of the room, sobbing loudly. Everyone watched her leave in silent shock. It really set in stone just how serious this whole thing was. But what exactly could’ve made her cry?

“Jeon Jeongguk, you’re next.” A hostile voice called and it sent shivers down his spine. He stood up slowly and wrung his hands nervously as he made his way inside. It was safe to say he was terrified now, was Mr. Kim really that intimidating? Jimin did say he was hostile, but he also made it seem like he was this really nice guy too. Jungkook let out a long sigh to calm himself down. It didn’t matter, if he wanted to work for him he’d just have to get used to him. He had to be prepared for anything.

He carefully rounded the corner of the wall that led into a large office that almost resembled a board room. There was a window that took up most of the wall at the back of the room and had a really beautiful aerial view of the city. A long table sat in the middle with a few papers laying neatly on top, but no one was seated. Jungkook noticed a man with his back facing towards him looking out the window. He had his arms crossed as he turned slightly and glanced back at him.

His stomach plummeted.

I-It was him, the guy from the party. The one that he was dancing with and threw up all over-He was Mr. Kim?

Taehyung dropped his arms and shoved his hands casually into the pockets of his pants. He cocked his head and gave Jungkook a dark look.

“Have a seat.”
