“Yuna, what are you doing?” Jisu lifts the blanket to find Yuna crawling under the sheets and trying to settle in the space between her and Yeji. Her cold skin presses against their skin causing them both to shudder under the blanket.   “Can I sleep with you guys tonight?” Yuna pleads. She wraps her arms tightly around Jisu’s waist and buries her face in her chest.   Jisu looks over at Yeji who merely shrugs and back down to Yuna. “You have your own bed, Yuna.” She the top of her head gently trying to coax her into loosening her grip on her.   “I know, it’s just…” she sighs, “I just don’t want to sleep alone tonight.”   “Is something wrong?” Jisu asks, cupping her cheeks examining her face up close to inspect for any visible issues.    “No, I’m ok.”   “Then you can go back to your bed.” Jisu says in the most loving tone she could muster at midnight.   “Mum…” Yuna chides as she turns to Yeji.    “Ahh just let her sleep with us, it’ll be for the night anyways and it’s a bit cold. We can use the body warmth,” Yeji turns around and wraps her arms and legs around Yuna’s tiny frame and Yuna clings to her for dear life.   Jisu pauses for a second and looks at Yeji suspiciously. “What exactly are you two up to?”   “Nothing… goodnight hun,” Yeji smiles and closes her eyes quickly to avoid Jisu’s gaze.   +   Yuna crawls into their bed again the following night.    “You can’t make this a habit, Yuna.” Jisu says sternly as the little one tries to wriggle in between the middle of them again.   “Please. It’s really cold.” She remembers the excuse from yesterday that let her stay. It makes sense as well. The winter nights were getting ferociously cold - so cold that she had to have three blankets to keep her warm.
“We can turn on the heater in your room,” Jisu says. “Come on.” She wriggles out of bed and extends her hand to Yuna as the girl looks over desperately to Yeji, pleading for her to let her stay with them again.   “I mean we can save some money and sleep together again tonight to keep each other warm.”   “What’s with you two? Yuna you’re seven. Do you really want to be sleeping with us? Also you…” she looks at Yeji, “Weren’t you complaining about how Yuna whacked you in the face last night because of the lack of space.”   “I mean, it’s fine, really… just let her sleep here one more night. It really is cold.” Yeji shivers and once again wraps her arms protectively around Yuna who only looks at Jisu with round wide eyes. “Please mum…”   “Come on, the bed’s getting cold,” Yeji pats the empty spot where Jisu used to be and runs her hands over the sheets.    Jisu gives in for the second time. “Tomorrow you’re sleeping in your room ok,” Jisu says sternly and Yuna nods. They all snuggle in a little closer, hugging each other for more warmth.   +   Jisu checks in on Yuna on the third night.   “It’s time to turn off your light for bed, Yuna.” she pops her head through the crack of her door and looks for Yuna who was sitting at her desk. “And look, we’ll turn on the heater so that you don’t get cold.” Jisu switches the heater on and Yuna watches the light glows red, indicating that it was on.   Yuna reluctantly climbs into bed and tucks herself underneath the bedsheets.    “Goodnight sweet pea,” she kisses her forehead and switches off the bedroom light.   In the darkness Yuna stares at the red glowing light and it’s not long before her imagination takes over. She buries her head underneath her blanket and shakes her head as if trying to empty out the bad thoughts. “He’s not real, he’s not real, he’s not real…” she utters under her breath.   +   It’s midnight when Yeji feels a tug on her arm. When she opens her eyes she sees Yuna towering over her. “Oh god, Yuna...What is it?” she gasps still reeling from the shock of having her daughter’s face almost pressed up against hers.   “I can’t sleep,” she says, “Can I sleep with you tonight?” Yuna’s eyes widen and her lips curve into a pout that Yeji makes out from what little light was in their room.   “You know that your mum’s not going to like it…” Yeji whispers.   “But you’re the reason why I can’t sleep these last few days!” Yuna says in disbelief. The utter betrayal she felt could not be explained and would probably cost Yeji a few ice-cream cones. “If you hadn’t made me watch the Labyrinth with you I wouldn’t be so creeped out at things that move in the night. I don’t want to be kidnapped in the middle of the night!” Yuna slowly raises her voice from a soft whisper to a loud one and Yeji feels the panic set in, she hopes Jisu doesn’t wake up.   In all fairness to her it was a movie she had watched when she was younger and she didn’t remember it being that scary. Her mother - Yuna’s grandmother - would later remind her that Yeji spent the next week sleeping at the foot of her parent’s bed whilst she learnt to get over her fear of that movie.    So by the time the movie finished the damage was already done and Yeji had made Yuna promise to not tell Jisu she made her watch a scary movie.
