The next week was absolute torture. Yuna wasn’t one to hate maths, she loved both elementary and additional mathematics actually, but this new chapter was killing not only her love for the said subject, but also her one brain cell.

Differentiation was beautiful, but when it’s twin, Integration, came into the picture, Yuna just wanted to slam her face against the table.

Yuna tried, she really tried to understand what her teacher was saying, but all the letters were absolutely confusing and- Yuna just can’t fathom how she’ll cope with this disgusting topic.

Seeing her peers suffer along with her surprisingly didn’t make her feel any better. She has been studying her off for this stupid topic, and just as she thought she’d got the hang of it, she gets smacked in the face with a 6/10 test paper.

“I know this is a tough topic, but many of you are getting complacent from the previous scores you’ve gotten, but I’m just going to tell you that this two topics would usually be interlinked, the question asking you to differentiate y before integrating something related to the answer. So for those of you who gotten below a 7/10, you better buckle up and practice more. I will not have any failures in this coming exam.” Ms Bae said, making eye contact with Yuna throughout her whole speech.

Yuna instinctively looked down, cheeks burning from anger and embarrassment at her horrendous grade. She wouldn’t mind it as much if the four marks lost was due to her carelessness, because it meant all she needed to do was practice more. But her four marks was due to her inability of solving the last integration question. Yuna had left it completely blank, her brain unable to even regurgitate the starting formula.

Yuna glanced at the painfully white space below the last question, Ms Bae not even bothering to write a comment to show her disapproval of Yuna’s lack of attempt at the question. Yuna sighs with a heavy heart before picking up her green pen, which has been untouched for quite a while, scribbling down the notes Ms Bae was writing on the white board. It was confusing to say the least, the formula changing systematically when the graph changes.

The agonizingly long hour passed, Ms Bae barely managing to go through the four questions on the test paper. After Yuna bowed to greet Ms Bae, she slumped in her seat with a sigh.

Looking at her schedule, Yuna makes a mental note to kill Ms Yoon when she sees the two chemistry slots right after their lunch. Ms Yoon had told them she the day before that she could be taking an off day today, and Ms Bae said she was more than happy to take over her periods.

Four periods of math.

Yuna thinks this couldn’t get worse.

“It’s recess, you wanna come with us?”

Yuna looked up, locking eyes with Chaeryeong who had her arms linked with Lia’s. She guesses Lia would be alternating between her own clique and Chaeryeong’s clique from now on.

Just as Yuna was about to politely decline Chaeryeong’s request, Ryujin appeared behind Chaeryeong, sending Yuna a nod, as if telling her to tag along. Yuna’s eyes widened ever so slightly, before sending them a toothy grin, “Sure!”

Yuna didn’t miss the small smile threatening to widen on Ryujin’s lips when she gave them her answer.

Yuna’s eyes glanced across the bustling canteen, inwardly grimacing at the crowd that just entered. Ugh, people were never her thing. Especially if they were shoving her back and forth.

“Let’s go to our table, it should still be empty.” Lia says with a smile, linking arms with Chaeryeong as they disappear into the crowd.

Yuna’s brows furrowed, there’s no way their table’s still available. Letting out another sigh, Yuna watches as her friend’s figures completely disappear in the crowd, her eyes forming slits as she thinks about the amount of contact between all the sweaty boys she’d have to go through.

“Let’s go, don’t want you getting lost am I right?”

Yuna’s eyes widened at the foreign grip on her wrist, Ryujin’s deep voice catching her attention. Before she could utter a reply, Ryujin turns to face the crowd, walking bravely into the mess Yuna was so afraid of. Yuna cringes, feeling people knock against her, rushing to the stalls in hope of getting the last pizza by the italian stall. A soft squeeze on her palm jerks her out of her daze, Yuna quickly directing her attention on her hand, which somehow had been interlocked with Ryujin’s amidst the chaotic mess around them.

Yuna doesn’t remember when that happened, but she makes sure to give Ryujin’s hand a squeeze as well.

“Hey! Finally got out of the crowd?”

Yuna looks up when she feels the loss of warmth from her hand, Ryujin already taking a seat next to Chaeryeong. Staring at the now-filled table, Yuna’s eyes widened in surprise.

“How was the table empty in this crowd?”

Lia lets out a soft giggle, placing her head on Chaeryeong’s shoulder as she replied, “This is their table, it’s an unspoken rule in this school, almost every major clique has their own table to come to.” Leaning forward and grabbing a slice of pizza, Ryujin laughs (Yuna tries to ignore how the sound echoed sweetly in her ear) and takes a bite out of it.

“Now how did you get that pizza that’s obviously sold out-?”

“My friend works here, met her online and told her there was an opening here and she made really good pizza and pasta, so… why not? She decided she owed me one, so she reserves me two pizzas every alternate day.”

Ryujin laughs, shaking her head as she remembers how Sejeong and Chungha had managed this business, not minding starting out small in a school canteen. Taking a quick peep over the crowd and at the Italian stall, Ryujin lets out a low whistle, seeing the “sold out” sign placed on top of the pizza picture, but the queue proved that this school valued the countless other dishes they served.

“Damn, I haven’t tried the pizza yet, the queue always seemed too intimidating.” Yuna says, leaning forward to grab the slice offered to her.
