The First Summer II
Summer Breeze (여름 바람)"So where should we go?" Haera asks after yawning for the nth times since Areum brings her out of her hibernating nest.
"I'm thinking beach. What good is a summer vacation without a beach, right?" Addie answers instantly, wiggling her eyebrows.
Haein chuckles as she jots down the first suggestion on an empty page of her dark blue notebook, "Of course, you love the beach. I almost forgot."
"Tch. Yeah of course. Best way to show off your body and flirt with all the half guys. Just don't forget to bring your birth control pills, sis," Ahn replies, giving Addie a sarcastic smirk.
"Ahn. Babe. Sweetheart. You know how many guys I've been with -"
"Countless," Sehee interrupts.
"And have you ever seen me carrying their babies?"
"No but you're carrying their spe- Ouch! What was that for?" Sehee hisses when Haera kicks her leg underneath the table.
"We got an underage here," her lazymate points at Areum who is being strangely quiet, hearing the conversation with her cheeks flushed.
"Underage? She's 20, she can watch now."
"Not everyone is like you Addie," Haein continues, getting the approval from everyone who are nodding in agreement except Sehee.
Addie and Sehee are both known as the heartbreakers. They have been in many relationships compared to the other girls which is why the two converse a tad bit too explicitly sometimes. Though Addie is still the queen in this matter, Sehee is seasonal - specifically in summer. She is the queen of summer flings where you will see her in relationship with different guy and when the season ends, so does the relationship.
"Or maybe we can go to Hongdae. Wear y dresses, go to hotspots, bring some hot guys home," Sehee grins, giving Addie an I-Got-You-Girl wink.
"I think we should engage ourselves with the nature. Let's hike and camp on the Bukhansan Mountain," Haein says surely and calmly.
There is a long moment of silence and all the girls are giving looks towards each other before everyone refuses all at once.
The discussion continues until afternoon. The only thing that stops them is their sudden hunger. It takes more than 10 pages of Haein's notebook jotting down their ideas from an endless place suggestions for their summer vacation to lists of summer jobs, and some other to-do-lists in making their summer a perfection.
"What car can fit us six though? Do we need to rent one?" Sehee pops the questions since they wanted a road trip and have chosen the farthest beach they can possibly drive to.
Everyone answers with the name of cars that come up in their minds while some are arguing over how renting will cost them more money.
Ahn who has been quiet the whole time finally speaks rather hesitantly, "I can fix Highboy."
"You don't have to, babe. We'll figure some things out," Addie replies softly.
The girls know the story behind Highboy and how Ahn suddenly stopped fixing cars in her free times right after Changkyun left. Everyone remembers how Ahn came back home one night with tears streaming down her cheeks like a waterfall and how all of them slept together in the living room for the first time, embracing one another with Ahn in the middle. They remember the promises they made to never leave each other's sides no matter how hard life gets in the future. They remember how the night was dark but their friendships glow brighter than the moon.
"It's about time," Ahn smiles a little, convincing the girls that it will be okay. "It's been a year anyway."
"I'll help you!" Areum chirps always trying to lighten the mood.
Haera smirks, " You'll only destroy the truck even more."
"And you'll only end up annoying Ahn and she'll probably bury you there," Sehee teases before Addie joins in, grinning playfully, "With all the spiders."
Areum frowns at the word spiders. She hates that creatures with all her heart, even thinking about it already makes Areum loses her appetite which is why she drops her chopsticks and crosses her arms over her chest with a pout, glaring at the bullies, "That's not fair, you always play that card!"
Ahn chuckles and pokes Areum's pout with her chopstick, "It's true, Ari. There are even more than just spiders. It's an abandon junkyard."
Haein who only watches the girls squabbling shakes her head before catching Ahn's eyes, "If you need anything. Just let us know, okay?" Ahn hums and nods in reply, "Of course."
"I'm going to work as a lifeguard," Addie says.
The girls are now lounging in their living room, watching random drama on TV. Sehee flops herself on the maroon beanbag while Haera on the other hand secures the 2 seats sofa just for herself, laying there comfortably. Ahn, Haein and Addie sits on the 3 seats sofa together with Haein in the middle while Areum sits cross-legged on the floor near Sehee, playing with the lass's hair.
"At the beach?" Haein asks.
"I wish but there's no beach here in Seoul so swimming pools will do."
The older one nods before shifting her attention towards Ahn, "How about you?"
"Me? I'm not gonna work," she shrugs. "Probably going to fix some cars, go water surfing, enjoy summer the right way."
Sehee who is scrolling her phone sighs, "Lucky you. I'm going to work soon."
"The CU store?" Areum asks.
"Yeah, where else?"
Despite her laziness, Sehee is the one who works the most. While others only find part time jobs during the summer break, Sehee has been working at the convenience store near their house ever since she moved there. Sehee is not from a wealthy family, her father is just a barber while her mother passed away years ago. Being the first born child, she has to force her lazy self to work in order to help her father who is baring all the responsibilities to take care of his two daughters alone.
"How about you, Haera?" Ahn asks.
"PC room," she replies short, focusing on the drama.
Haera is a trash for games which is why she chooses to work at the PC room. Rather than spending off her money, why not work there and get money instead. Bonus, she gets to play for free too.
"Oh, Haein! Are you going to work at the hospital again this time?" Addie asks a little excited.
"Yes, as usual. Why?"
"Great! Send my love and regards," Addie whispers seductively, cupping her s while emphasizing the word 'regards', "to Dr. Zhang."
"Ew sis, get your erted out of here," Ahn throws the squared pillow she has been hugging towards the naughty one.
Addie lets out a loud laugh before throwing her hands up in defeat, "Not my fault that he's such a finger good."
"What the hell!" Ahn quickly grabs the pillow that she threw and starts hitting it onto the other girl before Haein who is trapped in the middle stops them, slapping Ahn's hand and pinching Addie on her thigh. Addie is catching on her breath after laughing so hard when she kicks Areum on her , "You cutie pie, where are you planning to work at?"
"I applied as a skating ring attendant at Go Roller."
"Uuu, will we get to roller skate for free then?" Sehee grins, poking Areum on her cheeks.
Areum giggles and shrugs, "If I get the job, I'll let you know."
"Awesome! Anyway, I'm going now. Adios es!" Sehee stretches before getting herself up from the beanbag.
"Take care. Don't forget to ask Mr. Kim for a week off." Haein reminds.
"Got it, mom."
It is just a typical day at work. Sehee is filling up the stocks on the snack rack while her workmate, Jaehyun is taking care of the counter. They will swap position somewhere in the middle of the shift.
Jaehyun is a handsome guy, she can't deny that. Sehee remembers how she got infatuated by his look when Mr. Kim first introduced him as her new coworker. That sharp jaw line, thick and manly eyebrows and the way his dark brown hair covers his forehead with a small split in the middle, she was pretty convinced to have him as her next summer fling.
But not anymore.
It has been three months since they started working together and everything has been nothing but boring as hell. Jaehyun rarely talks. Often times, Sehee wonders why he decided to work here when he fits more in a bookshop or a library. Given her natural talkative nature, Sehee did try to start conversations with him many times before but Jaehyun normally replied with short answers. The conversation couldn't go any deeper so Sehee decided to just give up. He is dense and innocent anyway. He will make a boring summer fling.
"Noona, can you cover the counter for a while? I need to go to the toilet," he asks politely and Sehee hums in response.
She feels the younger guy bowing. Sehee gets up from her sit and takes over the counter as he leaves. There are no one to attend for now and she sees Mr. Kim standing at the Magazine section just on her right side.
"Mr. Kim, can I have a week off please?" She asks casually. Sehee has been working here for more than a year so talking to Mr. Kim is not a big deal. They are like friends now. In fact, he is the only person she can joke around with in the store.
"When?"
"Next week," Sehee grins cheekily.
The older man gasps, putting his palm over his chest playfully as if he is shock, "Who is going to cover for you?"
"I don't know," Sehee chuckles at her manager when she hears someone putting the groceries over the counter.
"Unless you find a replacement, then it's a no for me," Mr. Kim replies with a shrug.
Sehee instinctively scans the customer's items while still looking at her manager, "Please Mr. Kim, I've never requested a day off before."
Mr. Kim shakes her head before laughing, "You always got your way out of everything, don't you? Alright, but only for one week," he warns like a father.
Sehee nods and gives him a big thumbs-up, "Thank you, Mr. Kim! You're the best, as always!"
She continues to scan the items when she grasps a familiar scent. Sehee clears and shakes her head to dismiss the thoughts.
It can't be.
"The total is 5000 wo- ."
"Shin Sehee," the male greets with his deep manly voice.
"Oh Sehun."
Sehun was en epitome of perfection. Seeing him today, in a somber Italian suit that seems to be tailored specially for him, she is not sure if there is any other word to describe something even more than a perfection. He is ethereal. She notices how his shoulders broaden and how he stands with so much more confident now. He still has that sweet smile and that sharp pair of eyes which gaze on everything a little too intimidating sometimes. He still carries that earthy scent. Sandalwood and leather. The scent she finds it hard to forget.
"How have you been?" Sehun asks with a small smile on his lips.
Sehee shrugs while counting his change, "Nothing much." She hands him the balance, "When did you come back?"
Sehun frowns at her question. He tilts his head slightly, "Come back from where?"
"From the States?"
It takes a few seconds for Sehun to digest before he laughs and Sehee swears she is this close to losing her sanity.
"Sehee, how can I come back from somewhere I've never been to in the first place?"
That voice. That voice when he calls out her name always drives her crazy. How can he still affects her like this even after years?
Sehee is surely shocks by the news but she brushes it off and nods anyway, "Good to know."
Learning that his family wanted to send him off to States for business school was the main reason why she decided to end the relationship. Now as she finally learned that he had never left and the fact that they still breathe the same air after all these years makes her head spins.
Jaehyun comes back right in time and Sehee steps out of the counter as soon as possible. She is still trying to play it cool, walking past Sehun towards the aisle she has been working on as if he is not the reason why her heart is violently drumming over her ribcage.
"Sehee?" Sehun calls out and she can't believe she hears a pinch of longingness in his voice. "I'll see you later."
Sehee closes her eyes and takes a deep breath. It shouldn't be this way. The past is supposed to stay in the past. That is how you live. That is how you keep your heart in piece. That is how you move on from the beautiful memories you once shared.
With all of the small strengths she has left, Sehee turns to meet his eyes.
"Better not."
And it breaks her heart seeing him staring back into her eyes with sadness that she knows he tries to mask behind that fake smile. He nods and leaves the store.
I wish you well.
