“Yeah, about that... This is my second time being a 12th Grader,” he simply confessed, a small smile gracing his lips. Despite the darkness, Mari was able to make out his expression.
Everything fell right into place. Of course, it made sense! He had already taken the subjects before. That was why everything was easy for him. This is the second time that he’s learning these things. Why didn’t Mari think of that before?
“Oh...,” was all she said when she realized something important. “Then, how old are you?” she asked, curiosity getting the better of her. He’s already opening up about his life, so she might as well go push this as far as she can, right? You have to listen to someone if you want to gain their trust.
Baekhyun looked at her before answering, “I’m 19.” He was rather embarrassed to admit his age in front of her.
Mari quickly looked away when she met Baekhyun’s eyes. It was difficult for her to lie when the person she’s lying to was staring right at her soul.
“Oh, you’re an adult now. How does it feel like?” She was praying to God she sounded as cheerful as she wanted to. The judgmental part of her was itching to come out any time now.
“It doesn’t feel any different, to be honest.”
“Why not?” Mari inquired, trying to get him to talk.
Baekhyun stopped walking and turned his body towards her. Just as then, the breeze caressed her skin it made the atmosphere even more serious than it already was. “Because I’ve been an adult long ago.”
Mari took a moment to process his words. She studied his face, half-lit by the street lights. It was unbelievable. How could he look so effortlessly good after a long day? She couldn’t understand anything from his stoic face. The emotionless eyes had quickly taken over him.
Finally, Mari managed to form a good enough sentence, “What do you mean?” But that was the last words heard of from the two. Baekhyun continued on walking in silence. The silence was too uncomfortable for Mari after her question was left hanging in the air.
