Chapter 1

Goodbye Summer

[Please play this song while reading - IKON - MY TYPE ]

It was the start of fall when we first had a decent conversation.

I have been standing at the hallways of the Engineering building thinking of ways on how to go to the nearest coffee shop without getting soaked from the first week of fall rain. The clouds have been crying for more than 30 minutes and I might be late for our group meeting if I don’t find any umbrella right now.

“You’ve been standing there for good 20 minutes,” a familiar voice casually said. It’s Jung Jaehyun – the math genius of our batch. He has been my classmates for three semesters already but I cannot consider him as my friend. We are more of acquaintances who pass by each other without saying a word.

“Uhh. Yeah.,” I answered awkwardly not wanting to engage in a conversation with him. It’s not like I hate him but we are not that close to even talk about random things. He is this unreachable intelligent guy while I’m just a wallflower trying to survive college.

“Here.” He offered a black umbrella while smiling at me. I looked at him without saying a word.

“Just take it.” He held my hands and put the umbrella between my palms. “I have an extra umbrella in my locker. Your groupmates are waiting for you.”

He beamed and waved at me as he walked away while I was still nailed to where I was standing, staring at the umbrella. Why the hell would he lend me this?

I snapped back to reality when by phone buzzed.

“Yah! Where are you?” One of my groupmates shouted on the other line.

“I’m on my way,” I stated and apologize. I walked towards the coffee shop with Jaehyun’s umbrella protecting me from the rain.

The next day, I looked for Jaehyun first thing in the morning to return the umbrella but his friends told me that he won’t be around for two weeks since he will be attending an international competition. What a genius bastard.

Two weeks have passed and Jaehyun is back at school again with, of course, a gold medal. He was opening his locker when I approached him.

“Hey! Congrats!” I greeted him.

“Oh! Hi. Thanks!” His eyes smiled along with his lips. It amazes me how he can still look this good after all the college engineering stress we’ve all been feeling.

“I just want to return this,” I told him, handing his umbrella. “It helped me a lot.”

When he accepted the umbrella back, his hand touched mine and I swear, for a moment, I felt a spark but I chose to ignore it. I smiled at him kindly and turned to go to my next class when he held my hand.

“Wait a second,” he chided and rummaged through his locker.

“Here!” He handed me a small box with my name written on it. “I suddenly remembered you when I saw this in Malaysia so I bought it for you.”

I looked at the simply covered box and opened it. It contained cute random dolphin stickers. I blushed at his thoughtfulness. I don’t even know what to say.

“Thanks,” I muttered shyly.

I didn’t even realize it but since then, he had been giving me random things like stuff toy, stickers, and drawings with dolphins on it.
