I am sitting alone in the kitchen when my only son Hui came home from his girlfriend’s house that day.

“Hey Hui, how was your day today?” I asked when he walked into the room.

“Great dad, I had a great day with Sujin today. I really think I love her dad, I am going to tell her next time I see her.” He said to me with compassion in his eyes.

Love. That word, the word that had so much power, so much meaning. Love, the word that can make you feel the most amazing thing in the world, or shatter everything in your world.

“Really? You sure you love her? That is a very meaningful word son” I said to him.

“Yeah Dad, I care for her so much!” He said to me with a huge smile spreading across his face.

“Son, I think it is about time to tell you about how your mother and I met.”

Flashback

I was 19 and only had one goal in life, to fall in love with that one special girl. I was a hopeless romantic, and even though I had girlfriends in the past, it was never that special feeling of love I was so desperately looking for. My parents were divorced so I never really got to see what true love looked like, so I was looking for it upon myself.

Everyday I went to the local coffee shop down the street from my house. It was quiet and small, and not many people went there because it was an unknown gem. I had discovered it last semester and have been going here very often since.

I walked down the street towards my destination. It was my favorite kind of day, cloudy and calm. Not raining yet, but I knew it would happen soon. The fresh smell of the rain that was to come was starting to form as a smile spread across my face. This was my favorite weather, so calming.

I arrived at the coffee shop and was looking into it through the glass window before the door and stopped abruptly.

Sitting at a table right on the other side of the window was the most beautiful woman I have ever seen in my life. Her beautiful brown hair, her pointy nose and bright smile in her face as she sat reading a book. I just stood there and watched her for a few moments. I watched the way a smile would creep onto her face as she read a certain part in the book.

Butterflies erupted in my stomach as I watched that smile spread on her face, the most beautiful smile I have ever seen in my life. She then looked up out of the window and in fear of her seeing me watching her, I kept walking towards the door.

I entered the coffee shop, pausing as soon as I got into the door. I could not believe her beauty, she was one of a kind. As I walked in, she didn’t even look up from her book, so intrigued by it.

I went and sat down at a table by the wall a seat that was a perfect view for this amazing girl. I sat down and ordered a coffee, and stared at her. I looked at the way she sat slightly hunched over her book. The way was slightly open as her eyes scanned the pages.

She looked so beautiful, so uncaptured in something she loved. She looked up from her book and caught me glancing at her. I looked into her beautiful brown eyes with amazement, as she gave me a small smile. That smile sent a shiver down my spine. I was looking into the eyes of the most beautiful girl I ever met.

She went back to her book as my coffee arrived, but I couldn’t look away. After around five minutes she looked up again and saw me looking. In any normal situation I would look away, but I couldn’t. She was captivating, I couldn’t look away. She folded the page of her book and got up from her chair, and started to walk towards me. I couldn’t help but panic, hoping she wouldn’t comment on my staring. She comes up and sits at the chair across from me.

“Boy can I tell you a wonderful thing? I can't help but notice, you're staring at me. I know I shouldn't say this, but I really believe I can tell by your eyes that you're in love with me.”

--

That day marked the beginning of my relationship with your mother. Our love was everything I wanted in life, it had showed me what I wanted more than anything. I fell farther in love with her every day. The way she would invite me over to the house she lived in alone every day, not wanting to be apart for a single minute. I fell in love with the way she read all of the time, the concentrated look on her face. The way her forehead crinkled and her eyes slightly squinted.

Every morning she would get ready within minutes, her natural beauty coming out so much, and she knew it. She spent minutes getting ready because she had no need to take more. She was captivating, every inch of her was indescribably beautiful.

She kissed me good bye as I left for school every day, wrapping her arms around me and kissing me like it would be our last. Every minute away from her was unbearable, but I got through it with the thought of going home to her. Your mother greets me by running into my arms, I pick her up and spin her around. I kiss her hard, not wanting to let her go.

"You are so beautiful" I said to her as the biggest smile spreads on her face as she pulls me close.

"I love you so much" she replies.

We went to her apartment and lay together on the couch, facing each other. I her face, admiring her beauty. Her eyes sparkled when she looked at me, and we stared into each other eyes. We kissed like it was the last, every time that we did. Sparks shot down my spine when we kissed, and butterflies erupted throughout my stomach.

At night we settled down with a bottle of vodka, erasing the pain of our lives and living in the moment of our blurred vision and the company of each other. We were in pure bliss, caught up in the mix of alcohol and love. We would climb to the roof and lay there, looking up at the stars.

"We are so small compared to it all. There is so much in this world and we are so small. It is all so beautiful." She said to me, laying against the roof and staring at the stars.

"It may be beautiful, but it's not as beautiful as you. We may be small in the world, but you're big in mine. You are my whole world." I said to her as she turns to me and smiles at me.

Her smile lights up my life, captivating all the beauty that this world holds. The blurred vision and cloudy mind couldn't block out her and all her beholds to me.

At the end of the night and the end of the vodka bottle, we climbed off the roof and into our bed, where I got to watch her slowly fall asleep. She would be staring at me, a smile spread across her face. Her eyes slowly slipped closed, the smiling never fading from her lips.

She would snuggle into my arms and drift off to sleep. I never went to bed before her, not wanting to have to cut any time with her. Soon after she fell asleep, I closed my eyes with the image of a beautiful angel sleeping beside me, and I fall asleep.

I stayed at her house every day after that. My parents often called to complain about my absence at home, but I was young, dumb and in love, nothing else in the world could matter to me but her. I kept up with school so I could prepare for a life of supporting her, a life that could be so good for us. I would do anything to make this happen, including be away from here for a few hours in order to set up our future. I would do anything for her, and the time flew by when I was with her. Every hour went by as if it were mere seconds, no amount of time would ever be enough to me.

She was everything to me, and all I wanted was to be happy. I would do anything for her, and I planned to do so. I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her, I did not want anything to get in the way of us. I wanted to make a bold move, something to show her how much I cared. I didn't have much money, but I had a plan.

That night we continued on like we usually did. With the last half a bottle of alcohol and each other, we went to the roof as she leaned into my chest. I looked down at her, as she just stared out into the sky at the stars.

The light from the stars and the moon reflected in her eyes and on her face, causing her to light up. She suddenly got up from where we were lying, sitting up to look me in the eyes. She was hesitant to say what she wanted to, so I urged her to speak what was on her mind.

As a tear slipped down her cheek and a small smile spread across her face, she finally said what she needed to.

"I'm pregnant" she said to me. I was absolutely stunned, but I knew what I needed to do next. I looked her into the eyes, as I pull something out of my pocket and say..

"Girl, can I tell you a wonderful thing? I made you a present with paper and string. Ope
