The golden orb in the sky illuminated the heavens, accompanied by the chirping of birds as a new day started in Tokyo. The honking of street cars and taxi cabs began to fill the air as I drew the curtains, allowing the sunlight to pour into my studio apartment. A sigh escaped my lips as I peered down at the busy streets, preparing myself for the day to come. Today is my first day at NaMu’s Cafe, the most popular cafe in Tokyo..well, at least according to Instagram influencers. I jumped as my alarm rang, alerting me to get out and catch a cab before I was late on my first day of work. Grabbing my purse and a jacket, I reached for my keys and phone before slipping my sneakers on and shutting the door behind me. I shuffled down the hallway and pressed the button for the elevator, only to realize that it was broken, leaving me no other option but to use the stairs. Ugh, how annoying. I shuffled down the stairs and checked my watch. I still have a little bit of time to catch a cab. As I looked up from my watch, I ran into the back of a tall man.
“Oh my gosh! I’m so sorry!!” I blurted out, as he caught his balance right before he missed a step.
The man shrugged, and continued to hurry down the steps.
Tch. Rude. Whatever. I don’t want to be late on my first day. He isn’t worth worrying about. I ran out the main entrance of my apartment and hailed a cab in a second. Wow! I beat my personal record!
“Good morning! Please take me to 709 Etinifni Drive!!” I said, hurriedly closing the cab door and fumbling for my phone.
The ride there did not take long, though worming my way through the crowd of people lined up in front of the cafe did. I finally reached the front door after apologizing and clarifying that I was an employee, not a customer,a million times to the rude customers behind me. I pulled the handle and to my dismay, found it locked. Peering in through the clear glass, I noticed that all the lights were still off and not a living creature was to be found in the cafe.
“Excuse me! I am terribly sorry, but please do refrain from leaving marks on the glass. We just had it cleaned yesterday.” a deep voice spoke from behind me.
I pulled my hands back instantly, spinning around to find myself face to face with a tall man, who I assumed to be the owner.
“I’m so sorry! This is my first day and I thought I had arrived late.” I spluttered, quickly giving a bow of apology as heat spread through my cheeks in embarrassment.
“That’s quite alright. I was late myself and I’m the owner.” the man chuckled, unlocking the front door and letting me in.
I followed him to the back room and couldn’t help but stare at his back. It just looked so so familiar!! Shrugging it off, I shed my jacket and bag in a cubby and put on the apron that had my name pinned to it.
“So you’re Dia?” I spun around to find myself face to face with a smiling shorter girl.
I nodded slowly as her face lit up, her eyes turning into little crescent moons.
“Nice to meet you! I’m Hyun Mi and I’ll be showing you the ropes today.” she chirped.
“Ughhh I don’t wanna work today.”
My head turned, following the new voice that had entered the room. Hyun Mi bounced over to the girl and gave her a reassuring pat on the back.
“At least this gives you a good excuse to talk to Myungsoo.” she said, rubbing small circles into the girl’s back.
“Yeah, but I don’t think I really like him anymore so I don’t even wanna work.”
Myungsoo? Who’s Myungsoo? Whoever it was, I gotta admit. He’s got a nice name.
“Sorry I’m late!!” a tall-ish male shouted as he ran into the room, panting. “Is he here already?”
Hyun Mi blushed as she made eye contact with the boy and nodded her head.
“Yeah, I think Myungsoo unlocked the cafe this morning.” she said, pulling her apron over her head.
“Oh! Where are my manners? Woohyun, Seul Yi, this is Dia! She’s new and she’ll be working on our shift with us from now on.” Hyun Mi beamed, tugging my arm towards her.
“Nice to meet you, Dia! I look forward to working with you!” Woohyun grinned, sticking his arm out politely.
I shook his hand and politely uttered a “Nice to meet you too!”
“Just look out for Myungsoo, especially on his bad days.” Seul Yi said, standing up from where she sat on the bench.
“Who’s Myungsoo?” I asked as the others put away their belongings in their designated cubbies.
“Myungsoo? Oh! He’s the owner of NaMu’s. Kinda mysterious. He doesn’t talk much but because of his good looks, girls swoon all over him. That’s kinda why we have so many customers.” Seul Yi said, gesturing towards the wall closest to the entrance of the building where I had nearly been trampled.
“Ahhhh.” I nodded, beginning to understand why the cafe had been so popular.
