oblivion

and i, for you

It was a gloomy, rainy day in Seoul.

The weather seemed to paint the city in a veil of black and white and Seulgi couldn’t help but feel a little lonely as she watched the drops of water on the window slowly fall. The people that passed by seemed to become blurs in her sight. It was almost like a painting and she couldn’t help but feel like she was right in the middle of an unfinished artwork.

It was quiet day. Their company had given the girls time to rest after their recent comeback. Everyone else was busy visiting their families or spending time with friends but Seulgi was simply all alone in their dorm. She supposed she could’ve visited family and friends just like the others but here she was, all alone with a heart half full of anticipation and half full of dread, waiting for a simple phone call or text.

She couldn’t help it. It was pathetic of her to do all this for a boy. But there was something about him that she couldn’t resist.

She was drawn to him and his sunshine smile.

Sometimes, she thought he was sunshine itself.

She sighed as she thought of him. She had been waiting the entire day and yet, nothing came. Her heart sank in disappointment. It was foolish, she supposed, waiting and hoping for something that wasn’t meant to be anyway. She threw her phone on the bed and sighed as she turned towards the window again.

There was still some time for her to enjoy the day. She decided that she would try to go around and see if she could still make something of the fading hours of daylight. Maybe, just maybe, she could end up forgetting about a certain boy and his sunshine smile.

Maybe.

That was enough to convince her to leave her dorm. After throwing on a large, warm, pink hoodie, she headed out. Since it was raining, people walked and moved fast, allowing her to walk through the crowd undetected. She didn’t have any destination in mind; she simply just continued moving and walking without taking note of where she was going. She seemed like she was in a hurry, frantically moving. Her mind was empty and yet a mess at the same time. The world blurred away and the crowded streets turned into unfamiliar ones.

It was all too late before she realized that she had been running away from her thoughts and feelings for him.

And doing so had made her undeniably lost.

She couldn’t search up where she was or contact anyone for help since she had left her phone on her bed. She groaned in frustration. How stupid could she get? She sat down beside a stone wall and buried her head in her knees. Her chest felt heavy with feelings she wish she could simply throw away and her eyes filled with tears wishing to escape.

She couldn’t help but blame it all on him.

Then suddenly, she felt a warm presence beside her and she couldn’t help but look up to see a certain boy and his sunshine smile.

With apologetic eyes and messy, chaotic hair, he said to her, “I’m sorry for being so late. We had a sudden lunch meeting that extended and I didn’t have time to contact you. It’s a good thing I recognized your pink hoodie when you passed by the restaurant we were eating at.”

She wished that at that moment, she had screamed and got angry. She wished that she had the courage to stop her heart from hoping and wanting something it couldn’t have. She wished that she had told him that she wasn’t strong enough to continue having feelings for him.

But instead, she simply buried her face into her hands, not knowing what to say or how to react. She was thankful that he didn’t say anything else. He simply stayed by her side, his presence a quiet and warm comfort to her troubled heart.

“We’re always busy… we never see each other,” she said softly. “It’s not like people will be accepting if they find out about us either.”

As she spoke, it started to rain.

She looked up at the sky as raindrops landed on her cheeks. The sky was gray and dark. The air was cold and unforgiving.

“Is all this even worth it?” she asked.

It started to rain a little harder.

He stood up and offered his hand to her.

“Forget what the world thinks,” he told her. “Forget about everything. Forget that the world exists and dance with me.”

She stared for a while at his hand before looking at him to see his face, so earnest and determined. His presence was so bright in contrast to the monochromatic sky. A daring of yellow in a black and white painting. An escaped ray of the Sun in the kingdom of heavy clouds.

She put her hands in his.

And together, they danced. With every step they took, with every breath they shared, with every laugh and smile, she felt herself coming closer to the edge of falling.

After which, they stopped, lungs rapidly rising, hearts beating fast, eyes focused on each other. The world had melted away and all that was left wasn’t a pair of idols or celebrities but simply a boy and a girl.

Seulgi finally realized the answer to her question as Jimin gave her his sunshine smile that she adored so much.

“Yes, it’s worth it.”

And at that moment, she fell.

And there was no turning back.
