Growing

Obstacles

The little girl looked at him with her big round brown eyes under her black bangs and the pink beanie which had been pulled onto her head, as he passed by. He sent her a smile, but instead of getting a smile in return, the little girl's eyes just grew bigger as if there were something wrong with his smile. For a second he considered stopping and try to talk to the girl, however his brain reminded him of all the things he had to do before meeting up with his friends. So he didn't say anything and just continued walking. As he passed another kid, he couldn't help but notice how tiny the child was.
It had been the same with the girl earlier. So tiny and round in all the winter clothes she had been dressed in.

He couldn't help but wonder how tall he must have looked to her. Just as tiny as she had looked to him, he would have seemed just as tall to her. He remembered when he was a kid and looking up to the adults wondering how it was to be an adult, how it was to be so big. How one became so big, did it happen over night? His grandparents and aunts would always tell him how much he'd grown when they saw him, but it was first know, when he had grown up he realized he had been growing all along. He was now, what most would call an adult, and yet he didn't feel like an adult at all. He still felt like he was his parent's little boy, even though he now could take care of himself. He had a drivers license, a stable job, an apartment.
He still felt like he was the child looking up to his huge and tall parents, even though he long ago had grown taller than both his parents. Since when had he grown so big? For once he agreed with what his grandparents and other relatives always had told him. He grew so fast. To fast almost, but he was still very content with his current position in life. He almost didn't want to let it continue. He glanced back at the kids he had passed. Cute and round in all their winter clothes.

He wondered if he's ever have a kid look up to him like that, with eyes like his own. Having one's own kid, watching it growing up to become an adult like himself. A kid he'd love and protect from all the evils of the world. Was it even possible to have something so dear to you? He had heard getting kids made one more responsible, but was it really true? He doubted he would get more responsible getting a kid on his own. He remembered when he had moved out from his parents house and suddenly feeling responsibility upon his shoulders, having bills to pay and laundry to do.
However, it had turned out, at least in his own opinion not to be true. He hadn't become more responsible just because he had left his parents' nest. On the other hand, he had suddenly been able to do all the things he'd never done while living with his parents. He smiled by the thought of his youth, and found the house-key in his pocket only to find the door unlocked when turning the key in the keyhole. He smiled again as he returned the key to his pocket and opened the door.

He heard giggles inside which immediately stopped as he closed the door.

"You're back?" a melodious voice asked, greeting him. He looked up from taking off his shoes, and his smile grew bigger. His beautiful wife stood in the hallway, having her phone in hand, obviously just ended a call. He took off his coat, ignored the groceries he had placed on the floor and went to embrace her.

"Mhmm.…" he hummed hugged her closely burying his face in the crook of her neck.

The only thing keeping them apart her bulging stomach between them.
