Grant
Against All Odds“What do you think?” Tiffany took a glance at Sooyoung who was sitting next to her at the passenger’s seat. They were already in the car. Sooyoung at the time was looking at the brochure of all the writing programs that they had at the National Theatre.
The next intake would be in January, just seven days away. As much as she wanted to enroll, the fee was just too much. Plus, the classes would be in Seoul, it would be difficult for her to travel from Gyeonggi just to attend the classes. It was not practical.
“Soo?” Tiffany called out for her again.
“Hmm yes?” Sooyoung quickly turned to look at the woman.
“What do you think about the program?” She asked again.
“It’s really great.” Sooyoung forced a smile. There was a hint of frustration in her tone. Of course Tiffany noticed it.
“Great but?” Tiffany asked another question. She badly wanted Sooyoung to enroll. Tiffany knew the program would be good for Sooyoung if she still wished to pursue writing as her future. “Hmm, I hmm I can’t afford this Tiffany.” Sooyoung mumbled slowly.
Tiffany just smiled to herself the moment she heard what Sooyoung had said. “Plus, it’s just too far from where I live. I can’t be taking the train every day just to attend a three hours class, and I have my job.” Sooyoung added. “It’s just impractical.” She voiced out.
Tiffany was just smiling to herself. Then she made a turn to a junction and approached a housing compound. Sooyoung recognized the place instantly. Tiffany then parked her car in front of the entrance of the house. She then looked at Sooyoung. “Come. Let’s talk inside.” She said before she opened the door.
Both of them went inside the house and Mrs Kim, the housekeeper greeted them at the door. “Ms Tiffany? I didn’t think you would be back this early.” The woman said.
“I’ll be travelling back to Gyeonggi later.” Tiffany informed the woman. “I’ll make tea.” The woman said before she walked to the kitchen. Earlier, Tiffany had arranged for them to watch Cats the musical later that night, so it’s best for them to rest at the house for a while.
Sooyoung then politely sat on the couch facing a big tall Christmas tree in the living room. Tiffany sat next to her and looked at her. “I really want you to join the program.” Tiffany started to speak. “But..” Sooyoung was trying to say something before she interfered.
“I could get you a grant.” Tiffany suggested. “But you have to perform.” She added. The theatre offered grants to some applicants, but the applicants must show that they deserved the grant.
“As for a place to stay, you could stay here.” Tiffany smiled as she gave the most brilliant suggestion. Mrs Kim came into the living room holding a tray of tea and cups. She placed it on the table and poured the tea to both of them.
“I can’t stay here Tiffany. What would your ex-husband say?” Sooyoung asked; she was restless.
“Heh? He’s not staying here anymore and this is no longer his house.” Tiffany said. “What would Emily say?” Sooyoung asked again. “I’m sure she would love having you around.” Tiffany said again.
“I don’t know Tiffany. This is big.” She said. How could everything happen so quickly?
“As for your job, there are a lot of bookstores here in Seoul.” Tiffany said, indicating that Sooyoung could look for another job in Seoul instead. “The program is just for 6 months Sooyoung, it would be good for you to finally have a bit of change in your life.” Tiffany suggested. “You are still young my dea
