The Im family was the epitome of a happy family. Im Sejun was a loving husband, doting father and a hard working man respected by the community. Park Jaeun was a devoted housewife, a patient mother and six months pregnant with their second baby. Yoona was a blessing to the Ims. Obedient, sweet and full of joy. Her joy was contagious to those around her.

“Do it again, mama!” Four-year-old Yoona squealed in glee as her mother gave her another push in the back.  Jaeun and Yoona were at the park playground waiting for Sejun to get off of work so they could all spend some time as a family before the baby came.

“Sweetie, mommy has to go the restroom. Don’t move an inch and don’t talk to strangers okay?” Jaeun reminded her daughter before heading to the bathroom.

Yoona nodded her little head, her hair swinging with the motions.  Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted a boy around her age staring at the empty swing next to her. Her legs dragged against the floor, slowing down the swing for her to jump off. She jogged over to the boy. “Hi.”

“Hi,” he replied.

“Did you want to play on the swing? I can push you.”

The young boy nodded eagerly and ran to the swing with Yoona. After making sure the boy was secure in his seat as her mother would do, Yoona pushed against his back as hard as possible, then took a few steps back to get out of the way. “This is fun.” He shouted with a laugh and stopped the swing soon after. “I’m Jungkook.” He said with a complicated expression that Yoona couldn’t quite understand.

“I’m-” “Dad is here to pick us up, sweetie.”

Yoona turned and saw her mom gathering their stuff. “Okay, let me just say bye to my new friend…Wait, where did he go?” He was right behind her.

Jaeun looked to her daughter with a confused expression but dismissed as the stage for imaginary friends. “Maybe he went home? I’m sure you’ll see him again.” Her mom comforted.

True to her mom’s words, Yoona did see him again. He didn't show up very often, only about once a month. By the time she was nine, however, her mom repeatedly stressed that it wasn't normal to see imaginary friends anymore. "Spend more time with your real friends." Her mom would say, her voice filled with worry and love. When she did as she was told, ignoring his presence, he started showing up more often, intrigued by her lack of response. Then when she was eleven, she had let it slip she still saw and sometimes spoke to him, that was when the weekly psychiatrist started. When that didn't seem to help she was prescribed all sorts of pills to help her stop seeing things. The pills hardly helped, so she turned to drugs. That helped until mom and dad sent her packing to rehab at the tender age of sixteen. Two weeks before her seventeenth birthday she was officially diagnosed with schizophrenia and slight paranoia. He finally stopped appearing on the day her parents sent her to the asylum but despite the heavy medication Yoona always knew he would be back.
