The Boys Are Alright

Babysitting Bangtan

They turned and left, walking a few paces to another bedroom. Inside the wide open door it was immaculate. The floor was shining and the bed was made. Sunlight streamed in through the window. There was a desk, at which the last brother sat, sitting in the corner, covered in paper and random headphones and other music related items. In the back corner of the room was another door, also open, that led to what looked like a small recording studio. The boy turned as they entered, without knocking, and looked curiously at his mother. When Jin stepped out from behind Tzuyu to get a better look, his eyes first caught on the lilac and blonde hair messily on top of the boy’s head, under which the sides of his head were shaved down to black hair. When he smiled, he showed all of his teeth, shining white and straight. Overall, Jin decided, this boy had some serious looks. Jin giggled at his own thought.

“What’s up, man? I’m Namjoon. It’s good to meet you.” He said, smiling again. He stood to shake Jin’s hand and Jin gulped, blinking rapidly. The boy’s voice was deep and dark, and he stood at Jin’s height. Jin grinned back uneasily.

“This is my genius, the one whose mixtape Hobi was talking about. He’s number one in his school, has a 100% grade point average, and taught himself English one summer.” She said, obviously extremely proud of her son. He grinned, rubbing the back of his neck. “Not to mention I get to take the credit, since we adopted him when he was only a newborn!” She grinned evilly and Namjoon rolled his eyes, the tips of his ears turning a scarlet shade.

Jin noticed she had mentioned when she had adopted everyone but the little boy currently on his hip, his thumb and snoring. “What about this one?” He asked, grinning and shifting the little boy. Namjoon paled a bit, grimacing.

“We adopted him a few months ago. It was a bit of a rash decision and there are still some… kinks to work out.” She said, sadness tinging her voice. Jin nodded, understandingly. “I’m gonna head downstairs, babe. You know our number. There’s a list of contacts on the fridge if you need us, Jin. Have fun, but try not to give Jin a hard time. I love you!” She said, as she turned and walked away, posture slightly rigid. Jin turned to look again at Namjoon. The boy grinned at him.

“You can sit. My bed doesn’t bite. Although this is the cleanest you’ll ever see my room. Hobi cleaned it for me last week.” He grinned evilly, and Jin found himself compelled to ask why. After situating himself and Jungkook on the bed, he turned his full attention to the lavender haired boy who was still staring at him.

“Why?” Jin finally asked, and caught Namjoon’s intense, but still pleasant, gaze. “-did he clean your room, I mean.” He clarified, as Namjoon nodded, rubbing his chin and smirking darkly.

“It was a bet. He lost. His punishment was to clean my room everytime it gets messed up for the next two months.” His smirk turned downright dangerous and Jin giggled, finding the intensity of the boy’s acting hilarious. “Too bad for him I always manage to break everything!” He cackled, and his voice broke, leaving him coughing and gasping for air. Jin looked on in amusement as Hobi showed up at the younger’s door, brows drawn together. At Jin’s amused expression, he relaxed against the door frame.

“Here just an hour and you’re already trying to kill Joonie.” He shook his head disapprovingly, but let out a laugh that didn’t fit his pretend-stoic face. Namjoon finally caught his breath, and Jin realized that the boy’s cheeks were slightly red from coughing and tears clung to his lashes. Jin caught his breath in his throat. He turned away to see Hobi grinning like the cheshire cat at his younger brother. “Did you tell our new friend your nickname, Joonie Baby?” He cackled hysterically, and Namjoon didn’t react much besides sighing slightly and rolling his eyes. Jin grinned.

“Hmm, Joonie Baby? I like it.” He watched Joon go completely rigid as the name passed his lips, and Hoseok giggled loudly, snorting at the end of his hysterics, before waving at the two conscious boys and leaving the doorway.

“You can just call me Joon, actually.” He said, blush still present. Jin smiled politely.

“Then you can call me Jin.” He said, voice light. Joon smiled back before rubbing the back of his neck again, a nervous habit Jin was quickly recognizing and cataloging.

‘Wanna hear my mixtape?” Joon asked, voice low. Jin smiled, but when Jungkook shifted on his hip and clung tighter, he realized he should probably check on the other two boys. Maybe he should even set up a schedule with how often he should be checking in. He had a feeling he would be spending a lot of time in Namjoon’s room, since the other boy made him feel quite comfortable. And the comforting weight of the youngest on his hip was nice, too. Hobi was friendly but clearly too busy.

“Give me five minutes, I want to check up on your brothers.” Joon’s face fell for a split second, but returned to neutral rather quickly.

“Just… Make sure you knock. Those two are obsessed with privacy.” Joon wouldn’t meet Jin’s eyes, but the older shrugged it off.

“Okay, I’ll be right back.” Jin replied, shifting the youngest again and heading for the door. He could feel Joon staring, but he just continued his way down the hall and down the steps.

When he reached the second floor, he shifted the young child in his arms again, finally beginning to feel the tiredness in his shoulder, and sighed at the sweet face the boy was making, his thumb and drooling on Jin’s shirt.

“Twins!” Jin called out, trying not to wake up the small boy in his arm. When the two didn’t answer, Jin decided to knock at their doors. The closer door led to Tae’s room, which he knew because it said so in hangul on a plaque on the door, so Jin knocked lightly at the wooden frame. No one responded, so he moved down the hall to the other door. Hoping that door led to Jimin, and not Jungkook’s room, he knocked. This time, he could hear shuffling and movement before the door was tossed open by a disheveled Jimin. The boy looked like he had been laughing moments prior. Jin smiled politely, and Jimin nodded back, grin still in place.

“I was just checking up on you two. Obviously your mother trusts you two to be safe when you’re in your room, so I’ll just come check up on you every hour or so. Is that alright?” Jimin nodded, eyes darting behind him to find Tae, who was sitting on the floor eating a bag of seaweed chips and gaming with his other hand. He hollered at the TV with a full mouth as Jin watched. Jin took a moment to glance around the room, and found that there was a door connecting Tae and Jimin’s rooms. “Alright- be safe boys. I’ll be upstairs if you need me.” Jin finished, face open and gentle. Jimin nodded distractedly, still glancing backwards every few seconds. “And if you want anything specific for dinner, Tae, we can go down and examine the fridge for ingredients.” He raised his voice so Tae would hear him, and the younger turned his head momentarily to cast him a wide, boxy grin. He put down the food to toss a thumbs up at the man, before continuing his previous activities. Jin nodded absent mindedly, and turned back to the hall. The door made a swishing sound as Jimin obviously shut it firmly.

Jin ascended the stairs again, knocking lightly against Hobi’s door. The oldest didn’t react, headphones blocking out all sound. Jin made himself visible through the cracked door, and Hobi smiled up at him. Jin cast him a thumbs up, much like Tae had done, but paired with a curious expression. Hobi returned the gesture with a wide smile and Jin grinned back. He left the oldest’s doorway and headed on, down the hall, to Joon’s door. The door was as he left it, open three quarters of the way. He pushed the door open, but the creak that followed stirred Jungkook, who groaned with his little voice and clutched to Jin for a moment, before relaxing again.
