Stuck Without A Place
PromiseWhen Jaehwan left Sohee's cabin, it was with his mind spinning. Looking up and around the ship, he confirmed his guess from the previous night that no, there were no flags flying to show the Captain's allegiance. That should mean that the ship was a privateer, beholden to no one except for their money, but the magician's presence on board made him doubt that. Norian magician's weren't easy to hire and they were certainly not cheap, and they were notoriously law-abiding. But Sohee's healing and the charm her now had painted on his hand - something to ward against sea-sickness, she said - were odd. The whole ordeal was confusing to him and he desperately wanted some answers, and so he set off in search of Krystal.
But it wasn't the woman that he found. The short crew member who had woken him intercepted him as he crossed the lowest deck, stepping in front of him and harshly grabbing his arm. "Where do you think you're going?" he grumbled at Jaehwan, crossing his arms over his chest and squinting up at the taller man.
Jaehwan shook his head slightly and gave a sigh as he reminded himself he did not want to get into an argument. "I'm looking for Krystal," he began, to which Joe gave a snort of laughter.
"She has more important things to do than to watch over some washed up toerag," the man sneered, then reached out to grab Jaehwan's shoulder.
Something inside of him snapped, though he wasn't sure exactly what the insult meant, and he stepped back away from Joe and pulled himself up straighter. "Don't touch me," he said, a small voice telling him that he ought not start a fight, but he pushed that aside and stood his ground.
Joe raised an eyebrow at him, then took a step toward him as if he would try to grab Jaehwan again. Before anything could happen, though, a voice cut through the tension. "Joe! You're supposed to be minding the rigging."
The short man scowled and his heel, shooting Jaehwan one last dark look over his shoulder before heading away, grumbling under his breath. Jaehwan took in a deep breath and turned to the speaker. "Thank you."
Daniel stood there, his arms crossed over his chest and a line between his brows as he watched Joe leave. His dark eyes flickered to Jaehwan and the line eased, a smile coming over his face then that didn't quite erase all the irritation. "Yeah well," he said as if that covered it all. "Come on, I doubt you've eaten anything. What was your name again?" he asked as he led the way across the deck toward the front of the ship.
"Jaehwan," he told the man as they entered a room. The scent of baking hit him hard and his stomach gave a loud growl.
Daniel laughed and motioned at the young man standing over a fire, stirring a huge pot with a wooden spoon. "Aron, meet Jaewan," he introduced, and though he messed up on the name, the newcomer didn't correct him. He merely bowed to the cook and gave him a large smile.
Aron returned the smile, though he didn't leave the pot. "I've heard a lot about you already," he said laughingly, and nodded his chin at a large wooden box built into the counter along the wall. "Get some bread to hold you over until dinner. There's more than enough there. And a few pieces of fruit, too," he added, looking to Daniel.
The tall crewman turned and opened one of the large bags hanging along the walls over the counter, and removed several pieces of dried fruit to hand to Jaehwan. As he accepted them, adding them to the small loaf he had taken from the bin, Aron asked, "How do you say your name again?"
Before he could answer, Daniel laughed and nodded his head. "Yes, your name is so foreign," he explained, shaking his head in amusement.
"Can we call you something else, like I don't know, Ken?" Aron asked, stirring the pot and making delicious smells waft around the galley.
Jaehwan fumbled for a moment, unsure of how to kindly tell them that no, he would keep his name that his parents had given him. And yet once again she came to his rescue.
"His name is Jaehwan, it's really not that hard," Krystal berated, stepping into the galley and tossing her hair back over her shoulder. "Or will you now give Yunho a new name to better suit your lazy tongues?"
Both men turned red and silent at her admonishment, and though Jaehwan wanted to tell them it was okay, he wasn't angry, she didn't give him a chance. A small smile came over Krystal's lips as she turned to Jaehwan. "I see you've found the food," she noted, eyeing the goods in his hands.
"Oh, uh, yes thank you," he said trying to bow to her without dropping anything.
She smiled at his actions and shook her head. "No need to bow every time you see me. Daniel."
"Ma- ma'am," he answered, stuttering over the first part. Jaehwan's brows crinkled in thought as he realized that the word he was about to say sounded nothing at all like what he had ended with.
"Jessica wants you, she has a few things to discuss. I will take care of Jaehwan."
Once again, acting as if he were a baby. He
