Unexpected Kindness

Joe's usually stoic face was streaked with tears, his eyes red from both the smoke and the sorrow. He looked up as Krystal and Jaehwan approached, but said nothing even as she knelt beside the man he cradled. His legs were stretched out to provide a pillow for the Prince, but from the looks of the intense burns that covered Yunho's body, Jaehwan wasn't sure that the gesture even mattered.

The Prince was burned badly, his clothing and skin melded together in such a way that Jaehwan didn't think he could survive. His breathing came ragged and he trembled in his servant's arms, not aware of the world around him at all. Both the sailors looked at a loss for what to do, and Jaehwan was no better.

And yet Siwon was. The strange man stepped close and looked down at the Prince with a surprising pity in his eyes. "Do you have a blanket?" he asked Krystal in a voice no longer coated in condescension. And when she shook her head in the negative - they hadn't planned to be gone that long and had only brought a little food and supplies - the man went into motion. He stripped off the outer layer of his robes, undoing a wide belt that kept them secured around his waist, and stepped toward Yunho while holding the fabrics. Krystal looked like she might tell him to back away, but to Jaehwan's surprise she did not, and merely watched as the man settled the robes about the Prince's form.

"He may be going into shock," he explained as he tucked the edges of the fine silks closer about the wounded man's body. "This won't do much, but they'll do until help arrives." He gave Krystal a long, sharp look then. "You do have help coming, don't you?"

"Of course," she said imediately, brow furrowing in anger. "The King is sending his troops."

Well, Jaehwan thought that might be a small stretch of the truth... the King would be sending his troops only if Jessica and Sohee could prove their case. The sisters were quite positive that Sukjin would believe them, but Jaehwan didn't want to count on it. Like they said, don't count chickens before they've hatched!

Siwon's lisps pursed as he looked down at Yunho, nodding his head slowly as if in conversation with himself. "Very well, I shall wait here," he finally said, and settled down cross-legged near Joe. "The thing is, Krystal... Eldresan was not involved. And we were not partner to this crime, nor the attack on your ship. Yes," he added when she snapped her head around to look at him, "I know of that. I think most people here in Kelsar with any kind of connections do."

He rolled his shoulders and continued. "The thing is, I do not want the attempted assassination of the Princess of Remasan and the, uh, capture and maiming of a Prince of Maklar to be held against my King. As such, I will tell you." He looked at her then, his dark eyes seeming to bore right through her. "If you ride hard, you can catch Changmin and bring him for trial. He only left at the sunrise, and he is with his family in a carriage."

Krystal had stiffened at the revelation, and without seeming to realize what she was doing, she had grasped the hilt of her sword. "Two hours ahead of me at most," she mused, looking southward. "He would have taken the trade road if he had a carriage. Joe-"

"I will not leave him, Princess." Joe's voice cracked with damage from the smoke, but he held her gaze firmly. "I will not. My place is here."

She frowned but nodded at his declaration. "Very well. Jaehwan, would you come with me?"

He was taken a bit aback at the question, unsure that they ought to be haring off after someone with ony the two of them. Instead of answering her, he turned to look at Siwon. "How many men did the, uh, did Changmin have with him?"

From the corner of his eye he saw Krystal start before a slight blush tinged her cheeks. He was right, she wasn't thinking straight through all of her anger, and he thought that maybe she would change her mind. But then Siwon said, "He had six," and Krystal's face settled into determination.

"Thank you," she told him, then moved for her horse. Apparently she didn't think six was too many, and so, unwilling to leave her heading off alone, Jaehwan turned to follow her.

Then he paused and turned back to Siwon. Whoever this man was, no matter that it seemed he had connections that Krystal did not trust, he had done Yunho a kindness that he had no reason to have done. Jaehwan gave him a bow, as deep as he would have given anyone else, and when he had risen Siwon's eyebrows had climbed high on his forehead in surprise. "Excuse me," Jaehwan told him, gave Joe a squeeze on the shoulder that h

Chapter 17: I'm really glad that thing turned out well and also that Krystal and Jaehwan did fully fall in love with one another. I could see it happening the entire time, and the way you wove their relationship was absolutely beautiful. I really liked this story and the adventure it offered, and I hope you had as much fun writing it as I had reading it. Now I'll need to read The Depth of Reason;).

Chapter 13: I'm glad they were able to find Yunho, but I feel so bad for him. I hope he'll make it, for his and also Jessica's sake. Also, I guess I've now seen someone that will pull emotion out of Joe. Now I hope Krystal and Jaehwan can catch Changmin before it's too late.

Chapter 11: First of all, with the last chapter you really know how to write a good battle scene. It was very intense.

Now onto this chapter. The pain and anger that the crew and princesses felt was very real and it left me almost emotional, especially when it came to Daniel's death. He was such a good man, and also so brave. I hope that Jaehwan won't carry the guilt for too long, especially since this wasn't actually his fault. Now I also how everyone will be okay and get through this okay.

That fiery being was very well written and I could imagine it well as I was reading about it, so good job. I'm glad it did accept the fallen into the afterlife.

Chapter 8: Okay! I thought they might be princesses from the way they were revered by the crew and with such high respect. I also quite enjoyed the way you explained about the world and how they are trodden on and ignored by King Sooman. This chapter really answered some questions and put things into perspective, so thank you for that. But now I'm worried about Jaehwan and Krystal's friendship, so I hope that doesn't change.

Chapter 4: I like this story so far. I do hope that Jaehwan will learn to trust them and know that they're concerned about taking care of him, instead of treating him the same way the slavers did.

Chapter 17: Okay I've caught up with this story and I just have to say WOW, I really liked it. If I had to pick between other stories, I'd say my favourite story of all time will always be Cursed, and I've really loved Depths of Reason too. I will reply to your reply soon enough one day! So, this makes me sad as now I've totally caught up with every story from Myths of Calceryn. Hence, I will go and search for other stories I can read off you in the meantime!

So back to Promise -- I really liked the ending, and King Sukjin proved that he was a just man. As for Krystal and Jaehwan, I thought that was a brilliant wrap up to their bonding. Jaehwan really cares about her but I got a bit emotional when Krystal delivered him his father's message. I think no matter what, Jaehwan really wants to go home -- maybe this will change in future chapters but for now, no matter where he goes, he will always want to return back to his family. Changmin deserved what got to him but I can tell from his POV that he was just doing the best for his country. Unfortunately, he was young and foolish and shouldn't have put politics into his own hands.
Now then, it appears that Sohee got something important -- it is the dang scroll about the dragons I just know it! I had a look a the timeline and noticed that Promise occurs before Depths of Reason, so I think Sohee has been called to discuss the plot. I'm glad Jaehwan will get to experience some more adventures with Krystal but this does come to the question -- will he bump into Leo and Joy on the way considering they are also crossing Noria?

Now, it was mentioned that Sohee saw an Elemental's touch on Jaehwan. I think this was the Elemental that Leo summoned in Cursed, rather than Jaehwan having any magical capabilities. I understand what you mean that it's hard to fill in the background of what's going on when you have a character who's not involved in the politics. It's nice in a way and Final Fantasy 12 does that too -- have an ordinary guy get caught up with people involved in politics. I can't help but wonder how the story would have turned out if it was from Krystal's POV. i feel like there I would have experience so much more as a reader.

But otherwise, brilliant story as always Tigress. You never fail to impress me and leave me at the edge of my seat! Myths of Calceryn have a special place in my heart :)

Chapter 13: Welp, Siwon surprised me too!! I didn't think he'd actually be a thoughtful guy, but damn, so Eldresan had nothing to do with this at all? Now I'm fishy about Kelsar! I guess we will find out about Changmin's true motives when he's caught and brought to justice. This is getting so intense. I just want to keep reading the next chapter eventhough it's so late T.T

Chapter 12: Did I just see Changmin there in the story!? Okay, I'm super curious to know what role you've given my bias xD In any case, it seems like he's definitely an antagonist in this story if he's escaping the city. I should add that Eric and Victoria probably feel a lot of burden if they since they are the next to take over the ship now that Daniel's gone T.T

As much as Jaehwan's lining the pieces seemed plausible. I think the Tower they are speaking of is the one where the Magicians strut their stuff in. Interesting to see that the Elementals are more than just summons. It seems that they are the energy of the planet: wind, water, fire, air and I'm guessing you might put in spirit or ether if we're going with the Greek Elementals. I like it! Yunho T.T Go get him ladies!

I'm curious as to why Changmin is in all this? It really is a delicate situation as Krystal puts it. Surprising still, he didn't kill of Yunho so he must also be aware of the cracking politics. I sort of like that you made the main character of this story a clueless lad from a village, and who was spontaneously saved from a slave ship. I feel so bad for Jaehwan at this point, but I can't help wonder if he has a role other than being the clueless village boy. Everyone else is so integral to this world, even Joe (who seems to be warming up to Jaehwan).

Oh wait, the tower really is Changmin's tower! You had me there :O Joe seems like he's on edge. He's just so angry about what's happening to his Prince. what a loyal guy to the end. I underestimated him. I sort of like the loyal guys. Poor Jaehwan -- we know clearly well who wears the pants in this ship xP
Eh? Siwon!? Damn you're really surprising me with these cameos haha. In any case, I never trusted Siwon in any stories xD But his clothes sound weird. I can't remember if I read about those robes anywhere else but I've a feeling he might be a Magician? And how the hell did Changmin burn down a whole tower made of stone!? He must have some wand at his disposal or something that powerful.

Siwon is slimier than I thought! Not sure if I will trust him. There's something very off about him. My gang better watch out! But his words leave a chill. What things is he talking about? I can't help but feel like it goes back to that Emperor with the dragons in Obarsan -- the name of his country eludes me. But damn, Changmin had some nerve! I dislike him already and he hasn't even made an appearance yet >:(

Chapter 11: Wait what!? Not Daniel! :(( I feel so empty inside. Who will say "Jaewan" now. I can tell things are getting serious, really serious. All the initial banter and good will is gone. The question is, what and how? Who led the ambush? How did they do it? Is there a traitor on board? It's like these guys KNEW when and where the Lion Heart would be.
Interesting bit of law there. I like how you added that aswell to the worldbuilding!
Ah, so that was where Jessica was, and also Sohee. That explains why they were away from the battle. At first, I thought that Sohee would only fight based on her orders from the Tower. But her reaction to Daniel tells that she really considered him as a friend at the least. :(

I just want to protect Jaehwan right now! It wasn't his fault what happened to Daniel. In the bigger picture, he saved the rest of the crew because he woke up :(

That ending gave me chills. Didn't think Magicians would have that much power. She must be very powerful. I'm also intrigued by the ritual? Did she call upon a being that takes away the bodies of the dead? Was it a cremation? I really want to know!
