the root world
If all the different alternate universes are lined up in a row, the Root World runs perpendicular across it touching everyone of them.
The Root World is like a copy of the world we live in now, but the reality has been unravelling and there isn't much left of this world now. What is left has gotten jumbled together around the Spire to that the Sidney Opera House now flanks the Seine and you can walk from Gangnam to the canals of Amsterdam. The people don't notice, they live in a dream where this reality is normal, and more and more people just stop existing.
the spire
The Spire is the centermost feature of the Root World. It houses the Keepers, and now the Seekers too, and it holds a portal to every one of the universes it touches. Normal people can't even see or enter the Spire, it simply doesn't exist for them.
Even in the worlds the portals lead to, theycan only be accessed or een seen by Seekers and Keepers, even if anyone else knows a portal is there they would have no way of seeing or activating it.
The keepers
There have always been Keepers in charge of maintaining the portals and making sure the web of worlds is undisturbed. Obviously something went wrong there and it went catastrophically wrong. Since then the Keepers have been scrambling to figure out what went wrong and to fix it. Now there is only one Keeper left and the Root World is nearly unravelled entirely.
What happened to render the Root World as it is now remains a mystery. The Keeper might know but he guards his information well.
the seekers
The Seekers originate from the Root World. Since then the Keepers have been recruiting people from the Root World whose state of dreaming was light enough to be disturbed, and those people have been dubbed Seekers and sent out to the other worlds to figure out a way to stop the unravelling.
The Seekers have all been living normal lives until they were woken up, either by a Keeper or another Seeker. Now a new batch of Seekers has been awakened to stop the unravelling of reality itself, but time is running out.
As soon as one becomes a Seeker they are erased from their previous life and those they were close to no longer remember who they are. They can briefly interact with people in the Root World, but those people will forget they exist a few minutes later.
Seekers are often paired up and sent out into another world together, and if two Seekers work well together then that partnership remains until one or both of them perish.
