Prologue
A Monkey Love Story“YAY!!” Donghae yelled in victory, after succeeding in shooting down the last spaceship in the booth at the Mokpo funfair. Donghae’s father smiled proudly at his son and hoisted the giggling eight-year-old boy onto his shoulders, doing an accompanying victory dance while his wife looked on in amusement.
“You did it, my boy! I knew you were the best,” his father praised. “Now, which toy do you want? You’ve won the grand prize so you can pick anything you like.”
“I want that one!” Donghae babbled, pointing at the largest plush toy hanging around above the booth. The staff smiled kindly and plucked the toy down before handing it to the overjoyed kid who was vibrating in happiness. “Monkey!! I wanna play again!!” Donghae exclaimed, hugging the beautiful monkey plush toy in glee.
Donghae’s mother was a little wary. “Dear, you’ve already won a lot of toys. I don’t think there’s enough space on your bed for all of them anymore.”
“Let the boy play, honey,” Donghae’s dad laughed. “It’s family day, and family day means we get to do whatever we want without worrying about anything! Right, Donghae?”
“Daddy, wanna catsh the goldfisch!!” Donghae squealed, lisping with his two missing front teeth. His father gently set the boy down and let himself get dragged over to the goldfish booth, laughing softly while his wife followed them with a smile on her face. Anything was worth it to see both father and son smiling beautifully like this.
