chapter 1

you're the snitch to catch

chapter 1

"So you're gonna suffer... but you're gonna be happy about it." - Ronald Weasley

In the Slytherin dungeons, Mina and Tzuyu didn’t stop pestering Yeri about what “come by the astronomy tower at 10,” meant. Yeri was convinced that it quite literally meant to come to the astronomy tower to accept whatever apology Jungkook had for her. Mina and Tzuyu were convinced Jungkook was going to smuggle her out of campus to Hogsmeade.

Yeri found it all preposterous.

“He would so do that, though.” Tzuyu emphasized. “He’s Jungkook. He’s ing Jungkook Jeon.”

“That really doesn’t validate anything.” Yeri snapped, rolling her eyes as she finished her Divinations homework. “Hell, how would you even know what he’s like? We’ve never even met him before.”

“He’s been in our Transfigurations and Divinations classes for two years.” Mina pointed out. “You’re just not interested in basically everything. You’re a little nihilist child, you.”

“Rude.” Jisoo called, and the girls looked up to see him and the Head Girl, Joohyun Bae, walking towards them.

Joohyun Bae was something different. She was quite possibly the pretties girl on campus, outshining the girls from Beauxbatons girls and getting confessions from almost every boy in the school. Every girl wanted her face. Every guy just wanted her.

The Head Girl stay down next to Yeri, and looked at the trio curiously. “What is all this drama? I’ve heard ten different versions of Yeri’s little incident during the game. Nice win by the way, guys.”

“Thanks. And there’s really only one version. He knocked me off my broom.” Yeri dryly deadpanned, before taking her parchment for Divinations and whispering wingardium leviosa on the yellow paper, and sending it floating into her room.

Joohyun looked at her slyly. “I heard that wasn’t the only thing going on, though.”

“He asked her out on a date.” Tzuyu excitedly said, her lips at the prospect of telling the story (her version of the story, mind you) all over again.

Joohyun’s eyes widened like a bunny’s. “I thought he just knocked her off her broom and caught her like a superhero. Yeri, why didn’t you say anything?”

Yeri inwardly groaned, and kneaded her temples. “I. Am. Not. Going. On. A. Date. With. Him.”

“He wants to meet her one-on-one in the astronomy tower. Merlin knows what he wants there.” Mina snorted, to which Jisoo, who had sat himself down on the arms of Mina’s armchair, laughed as well.

“Good luck scoring that one. You’re gonna need it.” Jisoo winked.

Yeri almost screamed sectumsempra.

During Divinations, Yeri couldn’t help but sneak looks in Jungkook’s direction curiously. He sat diagonally from her, three seats to the right, next to a pretty girl with a peachy face, Dahyun, and Taehyung. Yeri recognized Taehyung easily as the boy who hung out with Baekhyun and the Gryffindor quidditch team.

He seemed focused on what Professor Trelwaney was saying, and was scribbling down notes quickly. Yeri’s own parchment paper had several blanks in between.

It wasn’t that she wanted to look at Jungkook.

It was that she couldn’t stop.

She was curious about just what he had prepared for her in the astronomy tower. She wondered why he had gone lengths just for a mere apology in the first place. She wondered whether Tzuyu and Mina could be right for once…

… And then shook her head. No way.

Smiling to herself, she took one last peek at Jungkook, who snapped his head up. Staring at her. And her dumb smile.

And he smiled back, giving a small wave with his hand a little too enthusiastically for her taste. Yeri awkwardly acknowledged him with a little nod, before digging her face back into her notes.

Oh, she so was doomed.

When class finally ended, with Yeri looking into the bottom of her teacup where the magical tea leaf residue had gathered, all she could see was a donut. Professor Trelwaney seemed confused, and told her that her fate was “undetermined”. And she mentioned that Yeri’s results were extremely subpar.

To Yeri, that was pure bull, but she did need to pass the class.

And to pass this class, she needed to get good ing results. Mina patted her on the back, telling her that one bad teacup wasn’t going to affect anything. Tzuyu, on the other hand, was more interested in Jungkook. “I saw those looks.” Tzuyu grinned.

“I’m sorry that I was curious about the dude who knocked me off my broom.” Yeri snorted.

As the trio got ready to leave the classroom, someone tapped Yeri on the shoulder. Yeri didn’t need to turn around to figure out it was Jungkook—the cheeky smiles blooming on Tzuyu and Mina’s face were enough. Yeri breathed in and turned around, facing Jungkook’s radiant smile. “Hey.”

“Hi.”

“So, when I meant 10, I meant at night. I just realized I forgot to tell you.” Jungkook started, brushing his hair back. His hair was tousled in a boyish way, and his eyes seemed to wander slightly, resting on Yeri’s frame for a few seconds before darting awkwardly to a different corner of the room. “But that probably wasn’t necessary judging by the fact that we have Divinations at 10 a.m.”

Yeri wasn’t sure where the conversation was going, but nodded along anyway.

“Please be there okay? I have something important to give you.” Jungkook flashed her another smile, before jogging to catch up to Taehyung and the two girls. Taehyung gave Yeri an energetic wave while Dahyun gave her a quick smile. The girl with the peachy face simply stared at her, before walking away.

Mina patted Yeri on the back, while Tzuyu suppressed squeals.

“I got it.” Tzuyu suddenly bursted out during lunch in the Great Hall. “I figured it out.”

Vernon, who was sulking after Hufflepuff’s Sana had rejected his request to go to the Yule Ball in favor of Ravenclaw’s Wonwoo, turned to Tzuyu with a frown. “Is this about that Gryffindor kid again?”

“Yes!” Tzuyu’s eyes were shining bright now, as if a light bulb had gone off in her brain. “It’s the Yule Ball!”

Yeri’s brows furrowed, and she exchanged looks with Mina, who was nibbling on a piece of bread. Professor McGonagall had alluded to the Yule Ball a few days ago, but the Yule Ball wouldn’t be held for another month and a half. “Where are you trying to go with this?”

“He’s going to ask you!” Tzuyu clapped her hands gleefully, “there’s no other explanation.”

“He could be giving her a gift or something.” Vernon pointed out, raining on Tzuyu’s parade. “The guy literally talked to her for the first time in his life two days ago. You’d think he’d wait before asking her to the ball, if he was actually planning on it?”

Jisoo thoughtfully drummed his fingers against the table. “Vernon’s got a point. Tzuyu, you’re definitely overthinking it.”

Tzuyu scrunched her nose up and shot him a little frown.

Yeri didn’t want to admit it, but she was nervous as heck when she made her way up the long, spiraling staircase. The air was growing frigid from the cold November air, and Yeri could feel the piercing cold attack her ears. The tip of her nose felt numb, and her fingers felt icy cold. She rubbed her hands together as she got to the top of the astronomy tower, reaching the platform overlooking the castle campus.

It was dark, save for the luminescent stars twinkling that were spread across the night sky around the parapet. Yeri couldn’t stop a smile from creeping up her face—the last time she took Astronomy had been as a first year. She had forgotten how beautiful the night sky could be.

“Beautiful, isn’t it?” A voice behind her asked.

Yeri swiveled around to face Jungkook, who gave her the same radiant smile that he had given her during Divinations.

A smile so radiant, it was like the sun which outshone the evanescent starlight stretched behind her.

“So, what did you need to tell me?” Yeri asked, cocking an eyebrow as Jungkook gave her a playful grin.

“This.”

Jungkook pulled out his wand, and instantly, the dark, endless ceiling hazed over. One by one, little sparkles of light began appearing, until Yeri realized what was happening.

Jungkook had enchanted the ceiling to take the appearance of the night sky outside.

“You… Enchanted it?” Yeri murmured, looking up in awe. Usually, the Great Hall’s ceiling took the form of the weather, but this felt completely different. This was like seeing Van Gogh’s Starry Night in the flesh. This was like seeing an art form come to life before her very eyes. “It’s beautiful.”

“That’s not all.” Jungkook winked. He pointed at a star that glowed with an emerald green hue. “That one’s yours.”

Yeri turned to Jungkook and raised an skeptical eyebrow. “Jungkook, the stars don’t belong to anyone. There’s over billions of them—you can’t just up and give one to me.”

“That’s no ordinary star. It’s a key.”

“A key. That star is a key.” Yeri repeated, speaking her words slowly to see if Jungkook would respond by laughing and tell her it was all a joke. He looked at her quite seriously.

“You have your wand with you, right?”

Yeri nodded and took it out. Jungkook stood reached for her wand hand, and with his arms encompassing her small frame, he lifted up into the air and whispered. “Wingardium Leviosa.”

After a second or two, the green star began began pulsating, releasing waves of shimmering green light before slowly descending towards the pair of young wizards. It kept pulsing until it stopped right in front of Yeri, the glow slowly dimming until she saw what resembled an emerald jem, cut roughly around the edges.

Yeri instinctively held out her palms, and the emerald dropped into her hands. “What is this for?”

“Follow me.” Jungkook said, grabbing her frigid hand and pulling her along towards the middle of the platform, where the planets were slowly revolving on a slab. He pulled out a ruby-hued stone, similar to her own, and reached for the model Jupiter. He stuck his key into the eye of Jupiter, and Yeri heard a faint click. For a second, nothing happened. And then, the platform under the planets slowly opened, revealing a staircase leading down into a dimly lit space.

Jungkook took a step in, before turning to offer a supporting hand to Yeri. She hesitantly took it, and let Jungkook lead her into the room. The slab creaked to a close behind them. The room was surprisingly spacious, with a warmly lit fire in the hearth and several arm chairs encircling it. The walls were made of a pale marble, with the star chart carved into them so that the whole room was encompassed, figuratively, by stars.

There wasn’t anyone there, but Yeri could tell someone had recently been there from the plethora of chocolate frog containers and toffee wrappers. Jungkook muttered a low “Taehyung,” under his breath, before flicking his wand in the direction of the wrappers. The candy wrappers flung themselves into the flames.

“So, this is what I call, the Appendix.” Jungkook proudly introduced. “It’s a compartment which the Astronomy professors built back when the four heads of houses were still here.”

Yeri was still dumbstruck. “… Don’t the professors know about this place?”

“No. They stopped using this compartment decades ago.” Jungkook shrugged.

“Then… How do you know this place? And how do you even have a key for it? Is this even okay?” Yeri sputtered.

“The Restricted Section in the library truly is a wonderful place." Jungkook winked.

The boy lead Yeri towards the armchairs, where he sat her down in front of the warm fire. “All of this might come across as odd, the lengths I’m taking just to apologize for a mishap during a game.”

Yeri found herself nodding slightly. She had actually been enjoying this experience, surprisingly, and hadn’t stopped to consider whether Jungkook was going a bit overboard. But now that he mentioned it, the nagging thought that had been bothering her ever since Mina and Tzuyu's pestering in the Great Hall and the Slytherin dungeons came back.

“I’m not just trying to apologize. This space is really special to me—only a few of my friends have access to it. And as bloody cheesy as it sounds—I'd like to be your friend and share this compartment with you, too.” Jungkook murmured, looking at her with a sheepish smile.

A/N: hope u enjoyed. big shoutout to my subs! comments and feedback would be appreciated btw.

to those who think this is similar to some other harrypotteraus—this plotline is mine and mine only. maybe the characters overlap, or some elements happen to overlap slightly, but that is all pure chance. im sorry to those i may have potentially offended with the first chapter. i hope this second chapter proves my originality (not that it needed proving in the first place)

anyway, ive introduced irene and sana and wonwoo (albiet fleetingly) youll be seeing more secondary characters soon ;)

PS IF THERES A YULE BALL THEN THAT MEANS THERES A TRIWIZARD TOURNAMENT. WHICH MEANS THAT YOULL BE SEEING KIDS FROM OTHER SCHOOLS COME TO HOGWARTS. WHICH MEANS YOULL GET MORE IDOLS. HAVE FUN.
