Chapter 6
What a Beautiful Mess This Is
Sundays aren't sacred, not if your job is on the line. So Kyungsoo finds himself and his other workmates in the office slaving away on their computers, taking occasional peeks at the scenery outside through the glass windows. A beautiful day perfectly wasted indoors. Again. If he's lucky, he could finish everything before the afternoon's over and he might just have enough time to swing by the market. He'd been thinking about cooking again, he misses it he says. A flash of Jongin's smile the other day, warm and content when he thanked him for breakfast, has Kyungsoo shaking his head to rid of it. He manages to convince himself that cooking is a self-serving purpose and someone else enjoying his food is just a fortunate accident.

It's only a few minutes after eight when someone buzzes his apartment and a puzzled Kyungsoo goes to the door, fluffy towel sitting on top of his wet hair. Jongin greets him with one hand full of groceries and that same arresting smile, and Kyungsoo has to remind himself to breathe.
"Good morning! Have you had breakfast yet?" He asks, remarkably chirpy, as he heads straight to the kitchen . Kyungsoo takes a moment to compose himself before he follows him, hand rubbing the towel through his hair.
"Uh, nope not yet," he answers and watches as Jongin unloads the items on the counter. "You're really early today."
Jongin looks up at him and notes the confused look on Kyungsoo's face. "Oh uhm, I'm not that early," he points out and goes back to rummage through the bag.
"It's eight in the morning. You're like an hour earlier than usual."
He stops rifling through the groceries to look at Kyungsoo, pursing his lips. "I kinda wanted to make you breakfast. Y'know, 'cause you've fed me a couple of times even though you're crazy busy and I appreciate that. So I wanted to return the favor."
"Oh," Kyungsoo's heart beat picks up because wow this is unexpected, and Jongin is looking at him, hopeful, eager and maybe a bit unsure of what he'll say. "You don't really have to--"
"I want to," he interrupts and who in their right mind would refuse such an offer? Jongin can serve him bland bread and water and Kyungsoo would eat it to his heart’s content.
"Okay then. Need any help?" he steps nearer to the counter but Jongin shoos him away. "I'm fine, go get dressed. You working today?"
Kyungsoo frowns at being told to leave but answers, "Nope, but I'm meeting Baekhyun at ten."
Jongin nods. "Hope pancakes are fine? I'm nowhere near as good as you but I make a mean blueberry pancake. Well, my mom says so."
Kyungsoo catches the compliment and struggles to settle the fluttering in his chest. "Yeah, sounds good," he says and he tries not to think about it as he heads into his bedroom.

By the time he comes back out, fully dressed in casual jeans and a button-up shirt, a plate is sitting on the small dining table, stacked with five golden-brown pancakes and topped off with two small squares of butter. A plastic bottle of syrup stands on one side and a cup of hot coffee on the other complete the picture.
