PERSONALITY:

mikan is intelligent but not the type to show it because she's so shy. a timid girl that prefers to be in the background that can't hurt a fly and refuses to hurt it. she enjoys helping others and doesn't expect anything back from them but her helpful ways can lead her to be taken advantage of. don't mistake her kindness for weakness though, she knows how to defend herself very well and can easily have you pinned on the floor before you even realize what happened. but mikan never wants to go that far, she's a very tolerant person giving people multiple chances even after they disappoint her on many occasions.

she believes everyone has good in them some just need more help to get it out. somehow she thinks that the war can be solved by talking it out. she thinks that maybe if everyone understood each other more there would be no more fighting. the patience that she has with others is crazy, she wants to know the root of the problem instead of just judging others so easily.

mikan was the type of kid who had a few friends but no close ones. its like she's always there but no one ever truly knows her, she doesn't feel close to anyone other than suki and her grandfather. she doesn't mind just sitting there watching the others talk and laugh along with them without saying anything, it doesn't make her feel left out. she's just a private person.

she prefers to keep her deep thoughts to herself because if she told them then they'll be there forever. she has a tendency to think deeper about things than other people. for example, her mother could be doing something like fishing and while looking at the caught fish slowly suffocate, mikan can't help but think if they have a family. the circumstances into why they chose to take the bait. was it starving or just greedy? since she often feeds the elephant koi she would start to feed them more often to try and prevent them from getting caught yet they always do anyways.

her need to help people can be her downfall though because she can't help but help every person in need that she sees as much as she can. even if they're in danger she'll probably try to help. in her friend groups she usually takes the lowkey motherly role. she'll clean up after everyone, buy them things with her own money and doesn't mind not getting recognition for it. she will remember the little things about her friends and is sensitive to others emotions and behaviors.  

BACKGROUND: 

mikan was born in kyoshi island, specifically oyaji's village. she only had her mom anzu and grandfather yuzu, her dad passed away from an illness before she was born so she never knew him. her mom was an ex kyoshi warrior and took great pride in that, she planted in mikan's head that she'll be a kyoshi warrior too when she got older. her mom was a typical citizen of the island, believing isolationism, gender equality and honoring avatar kyoshi. but her grandfather yuzu on the otherhand was a little wacky and mikan loved being around him way better than her mother. she remembered when she was younger he would leave kyoshi and come back with all types of gifts for her from different villages nearby. everytime she wanted to go with him but her mom never allowed her, calling her father a crazy old man. 

she grew up hearing stories about the amazing wonders of the other cities and villages, how different their cultures were and the wacky people he meant long the way. mikan looked up to her grandfather because he was so different from everyone else. she dreamed of being just like him but her mom was still her sole guardian and thats who she had to listen to. mikan trained to become a kyoshi warrior as soon as they would accept her to please her mother. she went through the motions but didn't feel any sort of pride like the others, she always thought she could be doing so much more, especially after hearing the horrific stories that some villages had to go through. she was aware about the war since she was little, her grandfather never sugarcoated anything for her. he described some of the gruesome scenes that he saw the fire nation do and even some power-hungry earthkingdom citizens. but in the end he learned that kindness overcomes all evil.  

mikan took what he said literally and thought that doing acts of kindness and talking instead of fighting can stop the war. if anything they could use their aikido to defend themselves, that way no one has to get hurt anymore. all they have to do is come together and show that they're stronger together than apart. that way, everyone can get along, be one nation and isolationism no longer has to exist. she announced her big idea during avatar kyoshi day to the whole village. but instead of getting a generous amount of support like she thought she would, she was seen as an outcast just like her grandfather. since then she's just been living a normal life as a kyoshi warrior, but people still whisper about her once in a while saying she's crazy just like her grandfather.              

TRIVIA:

🐠 before she left her grandfather customized her katana to have a poison pouch in it to use just incase. he said, "don't worry the poison is painless, but the knife isn't hhahahah." she didn't want it but he insisted, she doubts she'll ever use it since she doesn't like using her katana anyways  
🐠 she doesn't see other kyoshi villages as enemies, more like possible allies
🐠 she gives everyone the benefit of the doubt, even the firenation
🐠 she's a vegetarian
🐠 she finds fishing cruel but she knows how to fish and clean the fish because her mom made her help her when she was younger even when she expressed that she didn't want to
🐠 she has a soft and quiet voice
🐠 when she gets upset she holds it in until she explodes. but usually her being mad is her just being extra quiet and ignoring you. she might not fold your clothes like she would before but she forgives easily though
🐠 she knows how to cook meat but won't eat it herself. she prefers fishless sushi rolls. she'll probably be the designated chef of the group
🐠 she loves animals, tries to feed any one that she sees and water the plants
🐠 she can actually be kind of sassy and savage when she wants to
🐠 she sleeps quietly like a rock
🐠 she loves sitting and drinking tea while having a deep conversation because its what she used to do with her grandpa. the other person can realize that she thinks a lot from these times because she would talk about the most random things having different theories
🐠 she's never been in a relationship before
🐠 her name means mandarin orange, all of her family are named after fruits
🐠 she doesn't like wearing revealing clothes or swimsuits because she isn't confident
🐠 she loves listening to people play instruments and always wanted to learn how to play one
🐠 she doesn't really like loud places. she prefers sitting near the water with a good book
🐠 she's never gotten drunk befroe but when she does she gets loud and clingy
🐠 when she doesn't agree with something she'll try to nicely say her viewpoint but since she's not aggressive it gets overlooked. so usually when theres a plan she ends up going through with whatever others want yet still do what she wants because she can't help it. (like how katara interrupts their plans acting like appa is sick and pretending to be the painted lady) 

RELATIONSHIPS: 

🐠 maternal grandfather - yuzu (75) / farmer / eccentric, friendly, wise / 10/10 [george takei]
yuzu was an ex nomad that traveled all over the earth kingdom to gain wisdom before settling back down in kyoshi his home town at an old age. he never liked the isolationist ways of kyoshi island and wanted to change that because there was so much more the world has to offer. during his travels he has come across many more nice people than bad so he thinks its foolish for oyaji and the citizens of kyoshi to be skeptical about any visitors. the only reason he didn't settle somewhere else is because he always thought they could still change, he still hopes for it yet its stayed the same all his life. he's a big supporter of mikan, the only person that supported her actually. his words of wisdom and stories is a big part of who she is today. in their village yuzu is considered crazy though because his views don't match everyone elses. also because he can be a little strange at times yet somehow still full of so much knowledge (similar to king bumi yet also kind of like iroh). he has a garden where he grows his own flora and gives them out to random people around the village just to make their day. he's a sweet old man, always down for a cup of tea and some advice. he loves telling stories of his travels but he still considers kyoshi island his home and doesn't plan on leaving anymore.  

🐠 mother - anzu (45) / fisherwoman / strict, stubborn, hardworking / 4/10 [rinko kikuchi]
anzu is a strict mother with childhood wounds. while her father was out living his best life in other cities, anzu spent most of her time with the neighbors and her fellow kyoshi warriors. she isn't close to her father and her mother was actually from a different village. she supports isolationism so much because they were the ones that had her back and she doesn't want to ruin the unity they already have. anzu doesn't understand mikan at all, she can't get why she would want to leave kyoshi when everything she could ever need is right here. it makes her highly upset actually. she tries to control every aspect of mikan's life. the fact that she's not the leader of the kyoshi warriors makes her mad too since mikan is the oldest. she's always comparing mikan to suki saying mikan should take charge more and not be so timid. but the one time she did take charge and say how she felt her mother didn't support her. mikan usually just tunes her mom out but they do argue occasionally. most of the time mikan prefers to stay at her grandfathers house and despite mikan being an adult now anzu still thinks she can run her life.

🐠 friend - suki (16) / kyoshi warrior leader / protective, sassy, caring / 9/10
suki and mikan are good friends, even though others might not like mikan suki still cares for her even if they don't agree. suki thinks mikan's ideas are crazy but she doesn't dismiss them like everyone else, she at least tries to listen and debate about it. they agree to disagree but don't let it ruin their friendship. suki is really mikan's only friend. she's really protective of her as the leader making sure none of the other girls are talking about her behind her back or anything like that. when mikan leaves she'll try to stop her but if that makes her happy she'll support it either way, she would refuse to go along though.

🐠 acquaintance - oyaji (65) / village leader / judgmental, skeptical, protective / 3/10
mikan doesn't like oyaji though she'll never tell him that to his face. whenever he comes around she lets out a quiet sigh knowing he's going to make a bad comment about her grandfather and preach about the benefits of isolationism. oyaji was the main neighbor that took care of anzu when she was younger so they're close. oyaji sees mikan as his granddaughter and cares for her but mikan doesn't see him like that. she only has one grandfather and likes it that way. oyaji actually almost kicked yuzu out of the village for good for spreading his kindness defeats evil nonsense to the kids of the town but mikan was able to change his mind. since then she honestly lost respect for him because if were all one big family, shouldn't we support everyone? even if they're a little different? she's never rude to him though, she just wants to prove him wrong.
