Melody || Main Vocalist

All that is said in my reviews is solely to help the auditionee / trainee / artist to improve. Nothing said in the reviews are meant to criticize, bash or hurt the feelings of the individual.

Hey Melody (<3),
I'm going to be strict as I usually am with reviews. (I still love you but this is serious business)

Note that this review is based on the three covers provided

Beginning with the rubric review ;

Style & originality - (7/10)
Tune - (4/5)
Voice Strength - (3/5)

Total - (14/20)

Strengths ;

+ Remaking, you can make a song your own. This scored you good points in the originality section.
+ Melody (no, not your stage name xD), your tune doesn't run while singing the melody. I would have given you full marks for tune. (Why you didn't will be mentioned later)
+ Strong singing voice, you have good control over the power you use while you sing and you can sing with power when needed and you sound natural.

Weaknesses ;

- Voice stability, your voice sounds very shaky throughout all the covers you have submitted. There were only moments when your voice sounded solid and stable.
- Belting, you sound like you're shouting when you belt in Boy In Luv. Like I said, you have a strong voice and good control, but I think you need a tad bit more.
- Pronounciation, that word is self explanatory.

Inconsistencies ;

~ Harmonies, here is where it cost you a mark on tune. You can harmonize but sometimes the tune of your harmony and melody don't blend. Since I have said your melody is always in tune, this means your harmony is off. But this is just sometimes. Most times your harmony is spot on. If you can change 'most times' to 'all the time' then you would have earned yourself full marks in the tune section.

Moving on to the constructive review ;

I don't have to list out your pros and cons since they're above. I'm just going to share some tips and give a more detailed explanation of why marks were deducted in areas like style.

Once again I would like to point out your voice stability. Unstability can make it sound as if you're off tune but I can tell that it you're in tune. Your voice was constantly shaking and this is not a natural vibrato. There is a difference between vibrato and unstability. Vibrato is usually subtle, while the shakiness in your voice was very prominent. This unstability can be overcome the same way as vibrato though.

I was born with a natural vibrato to my singing voice, this is not a bad thing but sometimes you need to be able to sing smoothly. An unstable voice will take a little more time to get away from than a natural vibrato but with a little hard work and persistence, you can do it in no time.

Tip, practice soft and smooth ballads and record yourself. Soft ballads rarely have vibrato incorporation and even if it does, its subtle. After recording yourself very carefully review your recording and take note of any instability in your voice. You can also practice holding a single note and listen to yourself, when you hear prominent shaking, stop and start over. Controlling your release of breath will help to stabilize your note and also give you a more solid sound.

An irregular release of air will cause shakiness and a breathy voice.

Moving on to the second weakness I mentioned, belting. I mentioned that you sounded as if you were shouting, this is also a matter that can be overcome with some control.

You have a mid-strong voice, if you can tone down the power you use in your normal singing and strong singing, your belting won't sound as forced. If I don't make sense, what I mean is, you level down each part. If you can get that control over your voice, your belting will improve immensely. It will be much easier on the ear.

Tip, when practicing belts, try beginning with a song which doesn't have an extremely powerful belt and maybe in a lower key. Don't start on level Ailee and most definitely avoid songs in male key unless you can actually reach it in the lower octave. Not in a male key and then one octave higher, big no no. With time you will improve till you hit level Ailee and then you can say to yourself

"Achievement unlocked."

Lastly is the self explanatory, pronouciation.

I have caught some parts in your covers where you slur the words. Whenever I hear a K-Pop song, they have very very clean pronounciation. Its not like English where you have these "swek" slangs, no no. K-Pop is clean, clear and precise.

I want to point out in your Boy In Luv cover, at the beginning you were saying "wae nae maeumeul henene gonae" when it was supposed to be "wae nae maeumeul heunduneun gondae"

Throughout the three covers, there was some slurring and mushing of words where I would like to once again stress that K-Pop is clean, clear and precise. You can even take G-Dragon and Zelo's raps for example, they can get pretty freaking fast but the words are precisely pronounced. With the exception of satoori raps, every word is pronounced spot on.

Tip, enunciate each and every word in the song. Don't sing it, just read it like you would a story book, but outloud. If you don't know how to pronounce it, refer to the song or search up a simple romanji version. This will help a lot.

Last but not least, harmonies.

This is not your weakness however you are inconsistent with your harmony. I myself am not amazing at harmonizing (which is why I don't do it much), but I hope the tip I share is good.

Tip, listen to a song with a very clear harmony. Covers by acapella groups are the best way to go. Copy the harmony and, again, with time you get the hang of it.

That's it for your review, I hope it was helpful and the tips are useful to you.
Thank you for requesting and I apologize if I have said anything to offend you.

Yours truly,
     Ha Maerin.

Thank you for this! Now I see what you mean with "long review" it is very long and helpful indeed! :D

With shakiness, were you referring to my "attempt" at vibrato? loll.. Sadly I am not born with a natural vibrato so I tried.. Haha. I will keep on practicing it. But thank you for pointing it out. Zee mentioned it to me before too, but I didn't now which part she meant as being shaky.

And the belting, yes.. Sometimes when I get too excited I shout it out instead. lol. Reaching level Ailee would be like a dream. On a side note, I was planning to cover an Ailee song soon XD But i shall learn to belt properly without straining my voice.

You're right about harmonies as well. hahaha (You're right about everything) Sometimes I get it, sometimes I don't. Those acapella groups always amaze me! I've started learning harmonies when becoming a singer at church, so being able to apply it to kpop songs instead of gospel songs was already a new achievement for me. LOL..

Anyway, thank you again for the review! Maybe if I'll have time, I'll add more things to the review I wrote you. hahaha :p
