Why Is It A Shock To People When I Say I'm An SM Stan??

Can someone please tell me the mystery behind why everyone has such a shocked look on their face or sound shocked when I say I'm an SM stan... Like why?? I mean I know that SM is known for not treating their artists right but do you really need to hate the artists for their company's flaws? I understand that not everyone has the same taste in music or anything, but is it such a shock that I prefer to listen to SM songs?

Everytime I tell someone I like SM they ask me why... Every single time.. Like if I didn't say I stan SM would I get a different reaction? Probably. And this is me talking with fellow kpoppers not non-kpop fans because they just ask why I like kpop in general.

Well the answer as to why me and other SM stans stan SM is because we like the music and the idols.. I know shocker right? People actually do like and enjoy SM's music and adore their dorky idols.

I know a lot of people, especially in Western society, don't really like SM's style of music and I can see why to be honest. As a Westerner I've come to the conclusion that it's because SM's style of music is not something we're use to, at the start my brain was not thrown off guard when I first heard a song from SNSD  because their songs at the time were very girly and about trying to impress Oppa, and at first I hated them because of this, but in reality SNSD actually represent what a woman in society is like. When you think about it females get all dolled up and try their best to look as attractive as they can be and act in a certain way just so that they can get the guy to notice them. That's why I can no longer stand people who say "SNSD is all about trying to look your best for a guy" seriously because that's what females do it's the harsh truth. These "independent" woman who I have grown up listening to are in fact very rare to find. Songs that are targeted at females are about how all the boys want you, they will have to change for you, you don't need a man to be complete, blah blah blah. These songs were made because that's what their target audience wants to hear, they don't want to hear what SNSD say in their songs because they don't want to admit or see that it's true. In a lot of Western music with the female artists they just basically talk about how a guys want to bang them because their butts are big or they have big s.

For example the chorus from SNSD Oh!:

Oh! Oh! Oh! Oppa, I love you.
Ah! Ah! Ah! Ah! A lot, A lot!
Yuri: Please don’t laugh at me, I’m embarrassed.
Yoona: It’s my real feelings, please don’t make fun of me.
If you do that again, I might cry.

When you think about these are the things that will typically go through a girls head when confessing or being around their crush. It will be embarrasing for a girl if they were laughed at by their crush or be made fun of after confessing and there are girls who would cry after being put in that situation, so I don't understand why people (females) feel so offended when they hear stuff like this and say this goes against being a "strong, independent" woman when really that's how females, especially teenaged girls, feel, we just don't like being told that because then that breaks the illusion that females are the stronger gender.

This time I've compared this to Beyonce' Run The World:

To other men that respect what I do
Please accept my shine
Boy I know you love it
How we're smart enough to make these millions
Strong enough to bear the children
Then get back to business
See, you better not play me

Beyonce's words seem a lot more impowering and there is truth in the lyrics however in general not all females are like this and find it hard to cope with going straight back to work after their baby is well enough to be seperated from them, and I know that these two songs were aimed at different age groups... Never mind I was going to say something but then realized a lot of teenaged girls are getting pregnant so.. GIRL POWER!! :D

Now I know that a lot of people are put off of becoming SM stans is because they lable SM artists as "All looks, but no talent" which is highly unaccurate. A majority of SM artists are actually some of the best and top singers and dancers in all of kpop, which means that anyone who says SM artists are untalented.. Your statement is invalid.

Also even if it's still not setting in, SM and K-idols in general are what they are, IDOLS!! They are not artists, no matter how much they wish to be recognized as artists, they are idols. Idols singing are meant to be decent at least, nothing out of the ordinary, even though there are exceptions, they only have to be decent at what they do. So even if you still think they're not all that it's because there's really no need for them to be.

People say that SM songs have no meaning, their mainstream ones I admit are not all that meaningful but then again SM doesn't go for meaning because if it's catchy and highly likely to get stuck in your head easily then of course it's going to get downloaded.. And besides I don't even know what they're saying nor do I care so why should it matter if it's meaningful or not. And when you think of it a lot of mainstream songs, not just in kpop, but others as well don't have meaningful lyrics. SM songs that aren't mainstream are actually meaningful, well for me anyways.

 SNSD Let it rain:

I don’t know whether you’re my enemy or you’re on my side
But it’s time to pay the price
A moment when everything changes
All It won’t stop no matter how much I cried
It won’t stop no matter how much I pray
Now it’s washing us away
Now I can no longer connect
Our last separation, right
Just let it rain let it rain let it rain 2x

Exo Baby Don't Cry:

Above the dark shade of pain, at the doorsteps of farewell
Even if I take a brutal fall, I can manage if it were for you
Uh, Instead I’ll give myself to you who don’t know me
Don’t cry, give me chilling laughter instead of hot tears Baby

SHINee:

*[All] A-yo, when it’s tough
Doong tah dak, lean on the rhythm, oh
With our song for you
Everyone a-yo, everyone a-yo

A-yo, when you can’t sleep
Tap brush it off, leave it to the rhythm, oh
With the anticipation of the unfolding tomorrow
Everyone a-yo, everyone a-yo*

Super Junior Andante:

No matter how much I turn back your memory
Those words, I cannot avoid
At the end of separation,
I turn back, I turn back

** Slowly, slowly, the stacked up emotions
Slowly, slowly, the gathered memories
I will slowly, slowly forget them
Andante

I know there are so much more but these are the ones I bothered to put up.

Another big problem people seem to have a problem with is plastic surgery.. It's only plastic surgery and even though it's deemed as weird to have it in Western society, it's nothing out of the ordinary for someone to have gotten PS, it's probably as common as spray tan who knows, but it is said to be unommon for Koreans and K-idols to get PS, so I don't get why SM artists are constantly attacked, like get over yourself, they could've gotten for personal reasons or for company reasons, but who cares as long as it's not highly noticable on first glance and they haven't severly over done it and looks natural then I find no problem with it, and if it boosts the idols confidence and self-esteem then why should it bother others, I mean it's their face and their body.

Also another reason why I love SM artists so much is because a lot of them support equality and gsy rights, for example Jonghyun openly showed his support for gay rights and never regret it or took what he said back even after he was constantly attacked by his own fans, Taeyeon stood up for and protected the drag queens she had posted a picture of her with when she was on the set of Galaxy Supernovia after both her and the Drags were attacked by netizzens because the Drag Queens were pulling the fingers and because they were drag queens and Taeyeon took a picture with them, also Boa showing her support for gay rights at a concert, like how can you hate people who do stuff like that??

Now I'm not trying to say that SM are better than every other person in the music industry, mainly because there is no such thing someone being better than another since everyone has different tastes and styles so if they were truely better everyone would always prefer them over everyone else which will never happen, but rather that just because they don't reach your standards doesn't mean they're untalented, just because they weren't born with the looks they have now doesn't mean that their personalities are fake, because to be honest I don't think you can fake or act in the dorky way SM artists do

I roll my eyes when anti SM fans call their idols 'fake beauties' when I can gurantee you that most of the Korean artists/idols have had at least something done to their face to, even if they did get PS is it really that big of a deal? As long as they aren't obsessed with it and want to do little changes then that's nothing in my opinion. There are talented people in SM whether they agree or not agree.

Sure some of the lyrics are meaningless, but does there have to always be a meaning in everything? Some songs are just created to entertain people and make them feel good there doesn't always have to be a secret message behind the song. People bash Red Velvet's MV for that reason ^^; It's silly isn't it?

SM isn't the only company with flaws: YG, JYP, TS i'm sure any other company all have flaws. None of them are perfect.
