Plastic Surgery in South Korea

This blog post was inspired by this article about Krystal saying that no one in f(x) had plastic surgery, which sparked netizens' criticism. It's this whole plastic surgery thing that got me thinking. Let's start with some background.

Article: Krystal "None of the f(x) members got plastic surgery"

Source: Newsen via Nate

When asked if they got any work done for their mature new image in 'Red Light', Luna said, "We did not get plastic surgery. We managed our diets and lost weight by skipping on late night snacks."

Luna was asked again on a lie detector test if she ever got any work or procedures done and she said "never", which was revealed to be true.

Krystal had to add, "None of the members have had plastic surgery. Our members are bad at withstanding pain."

1. [+307, -31] I don't know about the other members but Krystal got double eyelids done... she looks different from her debut videos and pictures, why is she lying again ㅜㅜ..

2. [+173, -18] Huh????

3. [+112, -16] Hul~ ㅋㅋ

4. [+37, -15] You got double eyelids and your nose done.. why are you lying? Victoria's the real one who hasn't gotten work done.

5. [+35, -15] Did she mean everyone but herself? Because she got double eyelids and the corners of her eyes cut.

6. [+34, -9] I've never thought of getting work done as a con but it's because she says things like this that the comments are like this ㅋㅋㅋ Her eyes and nose are 100% different, is she joking? ㅋㅋㅋ

7. [+33, -7] Is she asking for hate? Don't say useless lies like that because it's only going to make people like you less.

8. [+31, -12] The members don't seem like they got any work done but I think Krystal got double eyelids;;

9. [+28, -4] Of all the members, can't believe Krystal said that... Even Krystal fans admit she got double eyelids. Why lie and tarnishy our image ㅠㅠ

1.) Why is plastic surgery such an issue in Korea?
It honestly doesn't make any sense to me. The thing is South Korea has the most number of people who have had plastic surgery. Since plastic surgery is so abundant, why are they so pressed about idols having plastic surgery? Isn't it a little hypocritical to say that she's fake and shallow because she had plastic surgery when their own country is the country that's known for it? And the thing is, male idols don't get called out for it. You only see female idols getting bashed because she has had plastic surgery and whatnot. I'm pretty sure some male idols have had plastic surgery too. I mean, look at their nose bridge. Is it because female fans are too obsessed with their oppars and hate on my unnirs?

2.) I'm pretty sure Krystal hasn't had plastic surgery.
I'm not saying this just because she's my bias or anything. If you look at her childhood and predebut photos, it's pretty clear that she hasn't had any work done. They claimed that she got her eyelids done but hello? She has had double eyelids since she was a child. I sometimes wonder if netizens are blind. The worst thing about this whole issue is that netizens are saying that she must have had surgery because there is no proof that she hasn't had surgery. Like wtf? I don't know but I only have one piece of advice for them: Please don't major in law next time.

3.) If a female idol is pretty, then she must have had plastic surgery.
Honestly, sometimes, korea's culture scares me a little. As long as an idol is pretty, then she must have done something. It's like plastic surgery and the whole obsession with pretty faces and skinny bodies has brainwashed them. Can't a person be pretty without plastic surgery? What's with all the hate on someone who has done nothing wrong? All Krystal did was answer a question that was posed to her, and she answered that truthfully. Just because she's pretty, you think that she's lying? That's just plain bull. And this gender discrimination thing in Korea keeps getting worse. It's actually quite funny, seeing that it's actually the female fans that are all 'oppa, please rest more, you look tired' and 'OMG she's such a cold ' towards female idols. Why do this to your own gender?

Sigh. The world nowadays. (Thank god these are only netizens and not people who hang around us in our lives. Netizens are pressed and shallow.)

I agree. The thing about (irrational, and a lot of the time, uneducated) people is: when they want to prove something, they tend to pick out the evidence that supports their theory/opinion and completely ignore everything else. In this case, it would be the pre-debut pictures of Krystal where her double eye-lids show. It's aggravating at times (and I totally understand where you're coming from), but as fans of girl groups, we have to learn how to ignore people like those netizens and not let their comments get to us...because most of the time those comments are written and upvoted by immature, jealous tweens who only have eyes for their oppars. It's a shame, really.

I agree with you. Just because someone is pretty in SK, they think you had plastic surgery and what's big deal of plastic, all they want to do is improve. I don't think anyone in FX got plastic surgery. They all look the same if you go see their predebut videos. Krystal definitely looks the same and Sulli. She already appear in cfs and dramas before she got into SM. Victoria didn't audition until later and she looks the same. Luna and Amber too.
