`chronicle. - Yeong Shimae

`APPLICATION.

NAME: Yeong Shimae (that's Shim-Ae, not Shi-Mae, thank you very much!)
NICKNAME:
Mae / May - Since the characters in Shimae's name are often mistakenly slurred, her friends take to shortening it to . (Shimae pretends to whine and correct them in exasperation, but does so only because they are deliberately butchering her name, not because it seriously bugs her. In fact, she'll grudgingly admit that it's kind of cute.)
Xiao Shimei (little younger sister / junior / apprentice) - Punning on yet again! the wrong pronunciation of her name and the Chinese phrase, some of Minseok's friends started calling her this when they found out she'd learned taekwondo at the same school as him. (This she does mind, because who even are these guys and who said they could go around calling her something like that? Especially because it emphasizes that she's the Little Junior. She doesn't even care that it's kind of cute too, like excuse them, she's not that little!)

FACE CLAIM + GALLERY: Yeeun
BACKUP FACE CLAIM + GALLERY: Kang Jiwon
APPEARANCE/STYLE:
Shimae's generally good about wearing the standard school uniform. Neatly ironed white blouse, tie knotted at a half-windsor, pleated skirt over short-shorts and sheer pantyhose instead of knee-high socks, with classic black leather mary-janes and her shoulder-length hair pinned up in a half-ponytail when her bangs grow too long...the only thing she refuses to wear is the school blazer, opting for a soft oversized hoodie that extends to the hemline of her skirt. Even though it makes her look smaller than ever, it reminds her of manhwa heroines wearing their boyfriends' jackets, which in turn makes her giddy when she can hide her hands in the sleeves and burrow against the collar because wow she really wants her future boyfriend to give her something to wear squee! She'd even consider a blazer if it's his, that's a pretty big deal in her book. (The blazers are stiff and ugly okay!) Shimae's gotten in trouble for ignoring that particular aspect of the uniform for so long that the teachers have pretty much given up on trying to correct her, considering she could've done much worse.

Unlike most (probably all) of her peers, Shimae actually chooses to wear her uniform outside of school too. She's got several sets, so it's not like she'll risk not having a change of clothes for the next day if she dirties one. Why would she bother going to her room and changing after class, when she can head straight out to play? Waste of time! Besides, Shimae doesn't think the uniform looks half bad. It's easy enough to move in, she's not particularly worried about accidentally flashing someone when she bends over, and, most importantly, the uniform is quite possibly the closest thing to a shoujo character's outfit she can stand wearing. While Shimae's all for frilly blouses and lace and ribbons, they're not exactly...practical. That and her friends laugh at her each and every time she tries to doll up. She wants to look cute and feminine, but since no one takes her seriously when she tries (frankly, she can't really take herself seriously either), she settles for eyeing the clothes she can't pull off longingly. When in her room, however, she'll swap the uniform for a pair of baggy gym shorts (a couple of which she may or may not have stolen borrowed from Dongwoo) or sweatpants, coupled with a loose tee, the ensemble pretty much doubling as her pajamas.
PERSONALITY:
Drama queen or intensely sensitive? Either way, Shimae is usually not afraid to very loudly declare her feelings to any willing to listen, the sole exception being when she fears it will drive someone she loves away. Generally left to her own devices since she was ten, Shimae has developed a strong sense of independence and can very well take care of herself - she merely chooses not to. Where's the fun in isolation? With only yourself and silence for company? No thanks! The exact opposite of a distant person, Shimae is an extreme extrovert and thrives on human contact, emotional and physical. Leave her alone for too long and she'll get restless. The kind who would rather study in a bustling dessert parlor instead of a library, or better yet, among a group of friends, Shimae is at her best when surrounded by people. Open and playful, she may come off as somewhat childish, but is laid-back and simple to get along with once you take the time to get to know her. So simple, in fact, she would doubtless be considered a social butterfly, if not for a couple of less savory quirks that come with her brand of outgoingness.

Preferring warm friendliness over rigid formality, Shimae likes cracking jokes to create a lighter and more pleasant mood, even if the jokes come at her own expense. Although she has a good sense of humor, Shimae may be blunt and therefore sometimes speaks before she thinks her words through - Dongwoo always did for speaking better with her fists than with . Even when she has good intentions, they don't always carry through. Some of her jokes can be inappropriate, dirty, or even border on offensive. What's more, there's a thin line between being witty with banter and downright crude shameless flirt, and Shimae doesn't always realize she's crossing that line of acceptable behavior. It's not just her words here, either. If you asked her friends to describe her in one word, you'd almost definitely get the same answer from all of them - "ert." Shimae is highly affectionate and a total skinship devil. She likes touching others, be it innocently hugging or hanging onto their arms, or be it not-so-innocently sliding her hand around their hips or slapping their butts. You get used to it, but it can be uncomfortable to some because she might not realize how intimate she can get. With how often she's seen man-handling grabbing someone in potentially inappropriate places, while in full public view, the perhaps obvious conclusion to be drawn is how she frequently she flits about and attracts attention. Yet while outsiders may deem her blatantly flirtatious, Shimae has never considered her behavior remotely ual. Call her naïve, but liking to touch nowhere near equates to instigating something more, and luckily for her, her friends understand that. Besides, she's a romantic at heart and firmly believes in waiting for The One.

That's another thing - Shimae is obsessed with love stories. She can't wait to experience one of her own, but no matter how she tries to reenact the sweet scenes from her books and dramas, things have yet to go as planned. Act cute? Forget it, it makes her friends cringe simply because it's such an obvious front compared to who she really is. Neither the timid and soft-spoken girl that guys clamor to protect (how nice would that be though?!) nor the y and confident lady that has guys wrapped around her pinky, Shimae seems to be stuck being "one of the boys" or that loud silly puppy you can't help but put up with. Ah well, it's better than nothing, she supposes, it may not be romance but having a harem that'll cater to her skinship needs reliable friends is just as good. In the meantime, she's got plenty of love for everyone, and goes about clearly showing it. The only thing Shimae probably likes more than giving skinship, is when it's returned. It's true, she likes attention, not in the vain sense of the word, but rather knowing someone she cares for will show her the same affection. She's spoiled in that respect, needing tangible validation lest she feel neglected. Nothing is more comforting to her than a tight hug or gentle hands her hair, especially when the chill of loneliness comes creeping. Shimae might seem clingy and needy for throwing herself around like that, but she really just likes the physical assurance. Besides, it's not like she jumps on just anyone - now that would be plain creepy, not to mention desperate.
TRIVIA:
likes
☣ skinship
she likes to touch people to show affection, and likes receiving it even more because of the physical assurance
☣ "cute things"
anything from stereotypical kawaii stationery and plushies to fluffy and / or chubby animals to attractive people she wants to pet all over, it's probably a side-effect to the girlish persona Shimae wants to exude but does not embody
☣ lemon bars
sweet yet tangy, a refreshing yet satisfying pick-me-up with her daily morning glass of milk or simply as dessert
dislikes
☣ being ignored / given the silent treatment by someone she cares about
it's uncomfortable since it means they're mad or upset at her for some reason, right?
☣ heavy perfume / cologne
she may like to stop and smell the flowers as much as the next person, but artificial scents, floral or otherwise, are much different
☣ dishonesty
Shimae's not one to lie and doesn't like being lied to, especially by someone she cares about - it means you don't respect her enough to tell her the truth or don't think she deserves it, which hurts all the more if you're close to her
hobbies
☣ hanging out with friends
while many people might unwind by relaxing in the comfort of one's own home, the thought of being cooped up all alone in hers has her scrambling for human company
☣ collecting postcards
some people compile scrapbooks or photo albums - Shimae fills them with postcards her parents send her from around the world, and has dedicated the bottom row of her bookcase to them
☣ watching drama marathons and / or reading romance manhwas in her pjs
fangirling, basically, and imagining herself as the female heroine
habits
☣ chews on things while she reads
for example - gum, tip of her pen, straw of her drink, her nails...
☣ rolls around in bed "to stretch" before she can get up
Shimae's not a morning person - if she could get away with sleeping to noon every day, she totally would but if she had an incentive to get up, say someone comes knocking, she'd leap right to the door
☣ always adds a pinch of sugar or pepper to her food
even before she tastes it and depending on if the food's sweet or salty
fears
☣ arachibutyrophobia (fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth)
happened once when she was five - she still remembers the feeling of almost swallowing her tongue while trying to it off
☣ athazagoraphobia (fear of being forgotten)
the thought that she matters so little to someone is rather painful
☣ coulrophobia (fear of clowns)
they're just creepy as hell okay, who knows what's going on behind their smiley makeup?!
other
☣ a second-degree black belt, although she never placed in the few taekwondo competitions she participated in - her style is unorthodox, despite being technically correct, which generally detracts from style points
☣ writes with her left hand in pen, her right in pencil - she can't switch for some reason, and believe her, she's tried, only to have her handwriting come out looking like a preschooler's with a crayon
total household slob - clothes scattered everywhere, coffee hot chocolate mugs permanently stained, desk cluttered with loose notes and papers...she doesn't like doing chores, and she's no housewife in the making anyway, it's fine as long as she can find what she's looking for right?
POWER + BACKUP POWER: Second Heart + Object Immortality
Strengths:
☣ Her second heart enhances Shimae's physical condition, making her stronger and faster, as well as improving her stamina.
☣ Although she still needs practice shifting from super to normal states, and vice versa, her previous taekwondo training makes honing and controlling her power significantly easier.
Weaknesses:
☣ She has...no idea that the source of her enhanced physicality is due to a second heart, having assumed she's merely developed super strength and speed. Shimae doesn't even know her other heart exists, never mind know where it is.
☣ Delayed reaction to injury - having another heart doesn't make her invincible, and depending on the wound, blood loss is a risk factor if she doesn't realize she's hurt.
☣ There is a carry over effect - if her second heart perishes while enhancing her abilities, the strain affects her primary heart and may be fatal.
☣ Having two hearts makes Shimae doubly emotional, and the whole head-verses-heart deal twice as annoying as well - and here she thought the phrase was a metaphor.

TIMELINE:
1996-2012 - Guri, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea
☣ 1995 - Yeong Jihoon and his wife and partner, Lee Aejung, settle into their new house, back in their hometown. Aejung recently discovered she was pregnant, and did not feel comfortable with their constant travel. They greeted their friendly neighbors, of course, and let the Jangs' little son pat her still rather flat belly. Dongwoo had not known at the time, having been a toddler himself, but so marked his meeting with Yeong Shimae, future dongsaeng extraordinaire.
☣ 1996 - Born the only child to a pair of successful travel journalists and photographers, Shimae was a readily pampered baby. Play-dates with the Jang children were frequent, and Shimae and Dongwoo were nearly inseparable.
☣ 2000 - Her parents began alternating with travel so that one of them was still always home with Shimae, gradually ending their hiatus from journalism by taking local and semi-local freelance jobs. Nothing that would take over a week of absence from the home, and showering Shimae with double the attention upon returning. It's supposed to reassure the silly child that even though they leave, they ultimately come back, but to Shimae, nothing quite made up for her parents being there for her.
☣ 2003 - Shimae's parents officially ended their hiatus and traveled as a pair once more for their stories, leaving her in the care of her grandmother. Her grandmother moved in with her, and Shimae eagerly awaited her parents' next phone call or visit. Postcards were always welcomed and added to her collection. While she was old enough to understand her parents must travel for work, she still missed them dearly, and clung onto those around her so they couldn't leave too, even if they promised they'd be back.
☣ 2006-2007 - Shimae's grandmother passed away. Her parents returned to organize the funeral and stay with Shimae, but time passed and they eventually deemed it time to return to work. While she was somewhat bitter that she'd have to stay home alone now, Shimae realized throwing tantrums got her nowhere and accepted the instructions to behave for the Jangs, who had offered to babysit while Jihoon and Aejung were away. Trusted by both their parents, Dongwoo became part coddling older-brother as well as best friend. In addition to having her over at his place, Dongwoo started taking her out when meeting friends because he knew how much she hated being home in her empty house. This was how Shimae met Minseok at an arcade near the academy where he was learning taekwondo, and wow this oppa's so cool! and the reason Shimae begged her parents to enroll her in lessons.
☣ 2012 - Dongwoo and Minseok enrolled at St. Pauline Prep. Cue the waterworks from Shimae because OMG WHY ARE YOU LEAVING ME TOO QAQ?! When told to study hard and catch up to them, Shimae took it to heart and did her best to prepare for and take the entrance exam. It didn't matter if she scored too low for any scholarships, as long as it was high enough to get in the school, she knew her parents wouldn't say no to paying her way through when she told them it would set her up well for university.
2013-2014 - St. Pauline Prep
☣ 2013 - Enrolled as a freshman and moved into the dorms, where she met her roommate Jieun. She then met her nemesis Jinah, who happened to be in her class, soon after. Shimae may or may not have also pounced on Dongwoo and Minseok the moment she found them bowling over some other guy with them in the process.
☣ 2014 - During a friendly spar with Minseok, Shimae accidentally knocks him out. Hysteria Panic ensues, and she doesn't even realize she managed to drag him at a sprint to the nurse's office until after she arrives...even though he's physically larger than her. Not to mention she barely broke a sweat, and her heart rate was still normal. She tells herself it was the adrenaline rush because she was afraid for Minseok but deep down she had her suspicions against that, because she'd lasted longer than usual against him during their fight, and shouldn't something be aching by now? The two of them brush the incident off after he'd awoken, with some teasing on his end about how Dongwoo and he wouldn't even have to worry about threatening her future boyfriend at this rate, but Shimae still feels uneasy. A few experiments on her own later, Shimae realizes she is unnaturally stronger, faster, and more durable than she should have been, and begins recalling her martial arts training to figure out how to control herself.
FRIENDS/RIVALS/LOVE RIVALS/ENEMIES:
Jang Dongwoo // Infinite // bestest friend in the whole of forever friend // Dongwoo always seems to be happy, and endearingly tries to raise everyone's spirit too, with his infectious laughter and quirky sense of humor. He is rather gullible because he's so honest, but it also shows how sincerely thoughtful he is when he says or does something. Though playful and fun-loving, Dongwoo's authoritative and serious when he needs to be - despite his goofy laid-back image, he's a quick and insightful thinker. // First and foremost, they're friends who know each other best. He's her trusty confidante, generous with skinship and jokes to cheer her up when she's down and eager to join in her excitement when she's happy, mixed in with a pinch of protective older brother she's never had and a dash of partner-in-crime when it comes to landing her ideal man. Shimae's known him all her life and shared everything with him, from milk and cookies when they were children to secrets and insecurities as they grew older. The only thing she's kept from him is the name of her crush, but she has the sneaking suspicion he's figured it out on his own anyway.
Kim "Xiumin" Minseok // EXO // crush friend + (potential) love rival // Though a reserved individual, Minseok is an all-around warm and sincere guy. Perhaps more uncomfortable with people he's not close to, he opts to smile and stay in awkward polite silence after respectful pleasantries are exchanged, rather than attempt to continue conversing - with loved ones, however, Minseok is actually very loyal and affectionate, even if he may not be particularly vocal about his feelings. Patient and good-natured, he isn't easily ruffled and is likely to laugh along or tease back when harassed…assuming he realizes, anyway. // Minseok's about as oblivious as a pile of bricks to Shimae's feelings...that or he's pretending he doesn't realize because it would tossing out such a long friendship, should anything screw things up between them if they were to get together. Since she doesn't treat him any differently than as a close friend, it's not exactly difficult for him to ignore his suspicions. It probably helps that in spite of being physically apart, they kept in thorough contact, Dongwoo and him often Skyping together to talk to her - there are no awkward pauses as they try to reconnect, except for the occasionally slight bouts of self-consciousness from Shimae where she originally had none when it comes to skinship. If he teases her when she gets flustered or deliberately gets her flustered now and then, it’s all in good fun right?
Im "Nana" Jinah // After School // friend rival // A secret goof with a quirky sense of humor behind her blank face polite smiles, she is honestly a sweet and loving girl. While she is generally mellow, she's rather frank and will usually say whatever she likes according to her mood. That's not to say she isn't considerate - she is also a good listener who is sensitive to the emotional cues of others, even if people seem to think she's a bit of a space cadet. // Strong, beautiful, and sassy, she's got all the qualities Shimae admires and can never possess. Her charisma appears graceful and her snappy retorts sound witty, whereas Shimae comes off as brash and uncouth more often than not. In aspiring to achieve the same poise, Shimae has a grudging respect for her buried beneath outright envy, but it's received with amusement and occasional friendly teasing rather than contempt. Once Shimae managed to warm up to her, which isn't particularly difficult considering how wonderful her hugs are sweet Jinah is, Jinah becomes her companion in the fickle sport of boy-watching, the pair sharing a comfortably open friendship acquaintance filled with blatant staring and shameless discussions.
Lee "IU" Jieun // soloist // roommate + (potential) love rival rival // She may seem meek and timid on first impression, but once she has warmed up, she is bubbly and talkative. Sweet, thoughtful, and friendly, she is the lovable "girl next door" and the ideal girl of many a guy, but this romantic is much more interested in the love stories of others than her own. A bit of a gossip, she straddles the line between nosy and attentive, but also takes everything she hears with a grain of salt, aware that the sources of most stories tend to be questionable. // On the other end of the spectrum from the model-like Jinah, Jieun is the kind of cute Shimae wishes to be. Despite sharing a suite in the dorms and living together, their friendship is closer to being "acquaintances who inhabit the same space" as opposed to the close relationship cohabiting inspires. It's mostly Shimae's fault, to be fair. Shimae isn't one to stay within her room for long periods of time, other than to watch or read something before falling asleep for the night, leaving them little chance to bond considering they're in different classes. A pity, since Shimae would undoubtedly find someone who'd enjoy spazzing over romantic-comedies with her. While they catch up briefly with each other in the mornings before leaving for class, or in the evenings upon return, they don't really interact much otherwise. When Shimae finds out that Jieun was at some point the crush of the guy who's been flirting with teasing her, however, it only convinces her that the guy can't be serious - just look at how different she is from his previous type!

LOVE INTEREST: Nam Woohyun
BACKUP LOVE INTEREST: Lee Sungyeol
PERSONALITY:
Bold and outgoing, Woohyun may come off as a shameless flirt or womanizer, but it's in actuality a front he puts on - behind the loud exterior lies a calculative thinker. He is observant and smarter than people give him credit for, but acts oblivious because it's more fun wiping the cocky smirks off people who underestimate him. Witty and a real smooth talker, he can be manipulative and knows how to get what he wants. Sincere with all he undertakes, he can be extremely stubborn about achieving his desires and determinedly pursue what he is passionate about. A bit of a perfectionist, Woohyun holds himself and his work to high standards, and has overworked himself on more than one occasion to achieve those expectations. For all his confidence, however, Woohyun is also prone to jealousy and self-consciousness, and may seek ways to get even with make up for whatever's upsetting him.
TIMELINE:
1995-2011 - Seoul, South Korea
☣ 1995 - Born and raised in a family of four, consisting of his father, mother, and older brother. They're the average middle-class family, neither suffering from poverty nor wealthy enough for most luxuries, with their livelihood dependent on their family restaurant.
☣ 2011 - While Woohyun enjoyed helping out with cooking at the restaurant and interacting with their customers over the years, both he and his family knew he was capable of more. He took the entrance exam for St. Pauline Prep and landed in the 89th percentile on average, earning a partial scholarship and work-study coverage for his remaining expenses. He'd have to work part-time in the school's cafeteria, which was ironically the kind of service he was looking to escape, but you had to do what you had to do.
2012-2014 - St. Pauline Prep
☣ 2013 - Unofficially met Shimae when she practically tackled him into the ground, but they were formally introduced to each other soon after. He'd heard about her from Dongwoo in passing, but reality wasn't exactly what he'd imagined. He developed a crush on her as he got to know her, and grew accustomed to her touchy-feely tendencies. He originally mistook them as Shimae's way of confessing to him, but realized that's just who she was and how she behaved with almost everyone, and became quick to respond to her skinship when he learned that it comforted her.
☣ 2014 - He thought it was a series of coincidences, at first. Getting someone to lend him their notes, whining to his teacher about postponing a quiz, weaseling his way out of cleanup duties... Woohyun isn't exactly a stranger to getting what he wants, so it doesn't strike him as bizarre when he gets his way. There comes a point when coincidence is no longer likely, however. He realizes people rarely put up a fight against him, and only do so when he presents his requests as questions. He confirms his hunch when he persuades the school nurse to excuse him from class for the rest of the week, using an utterly pathetic excuse "I think I'm scared of doorknobs." He begins experimenting to figure out the limitations of his power, whether it works when he's only thinking the command nope, over the phone nope, on animals still nope... He is terrified of the possibility to compel someone to harm themselves, so skitters around some experiments that come to mind.
RELATIONSHIP:
For someone so invested in experiencing a manhwa-romance, Shimae is incredibly oblivious to the lighthearted relationship unfurling between her and Woohyun - sure, they didn't have the cavity-inducing sweet love filled with squeal-worthy "moments," nor did they have the dramatic affairs where something always came between the male and female leads, but they do have something yet she apparently can't recognize it. Her skinship and her potentially flirtatious quips are always reciprocated, and Shimae can admit that she's comfortable with Woohyun...but she doesn't consider it romantic, per se. She sees him as playful and teasing, and though thankful to have another friend who'd indulge her, her sights are still set on her childhood crush. As far as she can tell, Woohyun's a reliable friend, but seems oddly possessive for reasons unknown. It's not like she's known him half as long as she's known Dongwoo and Minseok, after all.

The problem? Where Shimae sees playful teasing, Woohyun is really trying to flirt with her and ask her out. He wants to be more than a source of friendly comfort, wants to be someone Shimae can rely on emotionally. He responds to her skinship and her snark with blatant advances of his own, yet it's like the girl's immune to male attention after having been pampered by Dongwoo and Minseok. Ridiculous! Still, he's persistent. Once Woohyun discovered and confirmed his power, however, he attempts to influence Shimae towards him. It starts with little things - pay attention to him, don't look elsewhere, share her drink with him indirect kiss!...but after a while, he gets desperate bolder and escalates his manipulation. Say yes to a date, a kiss, two. It's unhealthy, to say the least. Happy at first with the results, it isn't long before doubt settles in. The closer they manage to become, the more dubious their closeness seems. She makes him feel insecure, which is unpleasant in itself, but knowing he's at the root of the problem makes Woohyun angry with himself and all the more anxious to have Shimae return his feelings.
