Face Claim: Hwang Jinuk

Back-up Face Claim: Park Sangil

Height: 181 cm

Weight: 64 kg

Style: Jaedeok is known as Korea's gentleman, as he actually enjoys wearing suits. No seriously. Dress shirts, ties, jackets, everything. If he's not in a full suit (because, really, who wears a suit every day?), he'll either be in a dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up or a t-shirt with a suit jacket over it. Not a big fan of jewelry as a whole, but he does like to wear this ring that his father has a matching copy of -- at the time he got it, he thought it was stupid, but he slowly started wearing it and now can't imagine leaving the house without it on. His ears are also pierced, once each, after what he calls a freak accident where the stylists forced him to do it. He's still working on getting over the trauma of the whole thing, and won't wear earrings unless he's forced to. He likes to describe his style as suave, fangirls like to describe his style as drool-worthy. He doesn't complain.

Personality:

At first glance, Jaedeok is cool, calm, and very suave. He's the kind of man that has a certain charm to him that simply attracts people. This isn't necessarily confidence, however, as Jaedeok has an air of mystery surrounding him. It takes a lot of prodding and a very close relationship for him to reveal anything about himself, though he does have moments where he simply cracks and pours his heart to whoever would listen. He prefers to keep his thoughts and feelings inside for the sake of others, and because he has a more private, self-conscious side. He knows that he's intelligent and, as much as he would love to have deep and meaningful conversations with the ones he's close to, he knows that people often think he's weird for his willingness to sit and talk for hours about the politics of the music industry or the evolution of dance or whatever else only he seems to find interesting. With that in mind, he's comfortable by himself, and even seeks this at times. He trusts himself the most and is his own best companion since he has a perpetual, "woe is me, no one understands me" kind of attitude, ever since he's been a teenager. He only gets down on himself in private, though, since he'd rather offer his expert help and advice to other people's problems. He's so good at this due to his empathy -- the ability to understand others. However, this is a bit of a contrast to his apathy, as it takes quite a lot to get Jaedeok to react to, well, anything. He's the type of person that has very little care for what other people do, so one could call him open-minded, but he really doesn't let other people offend him because, frankly, it's not his problem until it involves him. That's when Jaedeok starts to care and offer whatever help he can.

Jaedeok's greatest strength is his loyalty, though he acts upon it in very subtle ways. He's not the type to proclaim his affection in front of everyone with a flashing banner, but one is definitely able to tell that he cares for them because of his smaller actions -- remembering how they like their eggs, recording episodes of their favorite shows to watch together, buying their favorite candy on a day he knows they're stressed, for example. He doesn't speak much, on that note, and most of his affection is displayed through such actions. He's the type that you may not notice for a while, but would miss as soon as he's gone. His presence is subtle and quiet, but still leaves an impact on the people around him. He's a realistic and practical type of man, who is able to stay calm in almost any situation without letting outside factors or people affect him. He's an individual that more or less does his own thing without a care for people who want to stop him, which may lead to an unwillingness to bend over to accommodate others. If he's forced to be social, he's best with one-to-one situations where he may feel out a person and get to know them by giving them his complete attention, and he can walk away from a conversation remembering and simply knowing more about a person that they may expect. If he has to be around more people, Jaedeok is the type to stay back for a long while to observe everyone around him, assess the situation, then decide who he wants to socialize with. On that note, he is a picky person when it comes to being in public, even in general, so it takes a lot to make him both happy and comfortable.

On the more negative side, Jaedeok is known for his extremely high expectations. he pushes himself and others to be perfect in everything, which leads to him being overly critical. He's not one to raise his voice, but he has a nasty habit of talking down to people and playing at their faults and mistakes when he's angry. He's aware he does this, and regrets this like nothing else, but he also has a hard time apologizing because of a slight pride complex -- he's a bit afraid to appear weak in the face of danger or fear, and to bow to someone else's wishes. He pushes himself and others too far at times, to the point where he gets over stressed and breaks down in a fit of self-loathing. When this happens, he cuts himself off from other people even more than he already is and refuses to speak to anyone, even those closest to him. His goals are nothing less than perfection, so he won't stop until he achieves that. When he pushes other people, however, his apathy returns in a more darker color. He sometimes pressures others to be better than they actually can be, then gets frustrated when they don't meet his expectations. He's aware of this, too, and is trying his best to build his patience, but it's not easy to change one's personality. He's patient with certain people, such as his sisters, children, and whoever his boy/girl/whatever-friend happens to be. He has a soft heart with a hard exterior, but it's difficult to crack his shell and see who Lee Jaedeok really is inside. Only a very special type of person can do that, and they just might be a member of Gemini.

Background:

Ulsan, South Korea: first steps | Lee Jaedeok was the first child and only son born on September 15th, 1994 to a happily married couple, with a husband as an army doctor and a wife as a piano teacher... Though his father missed his birth. His mother was accompanied by his grandmother, who has a stronger influence on his life than his ever-absent father. As a child, he had a fairly normal life, until he entered elementary school. When the other children would talk about their mommies and daddies, Jaedeok didn't have anything to show for playing catch with Daddy on the weekend, Daddy helping him with his homework, or anything involving his daddy at all. His entire world was his mother, and he is a stereotypical mommy's boy -- strongly influenced by the female presence and male absence, to the point where his school friends were mostly girls. His best friend at the time happened to be in ballet classes, so, naturally, he just had to join, too, and be the only four year-old boy in the class. His female influence worsened when his younger twin sisters were born, as the 1-to-1 ratio suddenly became a 3-to-1 and his masculinity became a lost cause to forced tea parties and playing with dolls.

Lacey, Washington, USA: choreography | In his first year of middle school, Jaedeok was yanked out of his life and friendships in Korea when his father was transferred to an army hospital in the United States. To be frank, Jaedeok absolutely hated the country and the people in it for the first few years. He was often made fun of for his accented English because, hey, kids are cruel. His closest friends became his sisters, as he grew especially protective of them when he heard that they, too, were being bullied for being the foreigners. He devoted himself to their happiness, often bending over backwards and sacrificing things he wanted to do in order to attend their soccer games or band concerts or school plays with his mother, while their father still wasn't present, despite the fact that they lived closer to the base he was on than they had while he was in Korea. Seeing his sisters and how they clung to him as their only male, fatherly figure, sent him into a period of loathing towards his father for being absent and missing almost all of their lives, save Christmases. In Lacey, however, Jaedeok discovered a new passion in ballroom dance. His training in ballet made steps easy, but he loved dancing with another person and having to depend on each other to create what he calls a full story. Ballroom dance comes with competitions, which he always came into the top three of with his partner, until their split in high school...

Beijing, China: refinement | His father moved the Lee family for a second time, when he relocated to a medical center in Beijing. This move felt bittersweet to Jaedeok, as it tore him from his partner and ballroom dance in the States, but provided him with the opportunity to enter into the Beijing Dance Academy. Though his mother protested that it would be a waste of his time, that he should get into a "proper school" where he would focus on academics rather than dancing, but he eventually managed to convince her that universities offered excellent scholarships to students of the fine arts. While this wasn't a complete lie, Jaedoek didn't exactly plan on making academics his priority at school. He was accepted after displaying his talents in ballet and ballroom, and was immediately placed in higher level ballet classes. Learning Chinese wasn't much of a problem, since most of his teachers spoke English anyway and he had that advantage, but he did spend a little time with the language. He excelled in the school easily; his dancing became more refined and, as certain teachers called it, flawless. Jaedeok also experimented with his uality for the first time while in high school, when he found himself a boyfriend that he kept until his graduation from the academy. While his now-ex-boyfriend remained in China as a ballet dancer, Jaedeok returned to Korea with a certain dream in mind.

Seoul, South Korea: homecoming | Jaedeok's return to Korea was on his own and with very little money, so he wound up renting the cheapest apartment he possibly could while he began his rounds of auditions mixed with training mixed with occasional sleeping. He'll never admit this, but he missed the only solid things in his life -- that is, his mother and sisters -- more than he ever would have imagined. This drove him to a near-depression state where he almost gave up on dancing until his father received another transfer: back home to Korea. With a family reunited and a bit of financial support from his mother, Jaedeok found new confidence to begin auditions again, which brought him to A-Star Entertainment in the end.

[ ♊ ]     commonality

Family Members:

Father - Lee Taehyun - 45 - doctor in the Korean army - Taehyun and Jaedeok's relationship is constantly up and down. While Jaedeok very strongly admires and loves his father, he sometimes can't help but to resent him, as his career choice is the reason why the family moves around so much and Jaedeok never had long lasting relationships with those outside his family. That said, he also has moments where his misses his father deeply and wishes he could be home, so he could have what he considers to be a "normal" father-son relationship. Jaedeok refuses to speak about his father beyond "he's in the army; I miss him very much", because the mix of not having his father around growing up and not having a normal life because of his father hurts quite a lot. When Taehyun is actually home, the two can't help but to be a little awkward, as both try to hard to make up for what little of a bond they have. Taehyun does, however, send Jaedeok and his sisters gifts and letters when he isn't home.

Mother - Jung Miyoon - 47 - piano teacher - Miyoon is the driving force in Jaedeok's life, as she basically raised him all on her own. Their personalities are very similar in that they are both very calm and collected people that strive for perfection at its finest, which is both the cause of their close relationship and their constant bickering. Miyoon often doesn't agree with his life choices, particularly him devoting himself to dancing in place of studying and/or piano, and isn't afraid to call him out on that. With that in mind, he isn't afraid to argue back to her, as his passions are his passions and that's where his heart belongs. She does support him, though, as she could have stopped paying for his dancing at any time... But never did.

Younger Sister - Lee Jaehwa - 16 - high school student - of his sisters, Jaedeok is closest to Jaehwa. While, of course, both depend on him, Jaehwa has a personality that's extremely similar to his. This may be due to her constant clinging to him while growing up, and even now. She considers herself to be his biggest fan and supports him in everything without question, so she idolizes her brother more than sports or music stars. While he's not at home, he'll call and email her to check up more than he does with his mother or other sister, as he considers her the most responsible family member, other than him. When he is home, however, he won't be seen without Jaehwa attached to his hip, though he wouldn't really want it any other way.

Younger Sister - Lee Jaena - 16 - high school student - Jaena is a loner by nature, so she doesn't cling to Jaedeok like their sister does. However, she very strongly admires his passion and drive, and thus sees him as a sort of inspiration when following her own dreams. She's kind of a black sheep, since she's an academic in a house full of artistics (she plans to major in biology in college), and she's extremely ambitious. Jaedeok, however, sees this as a reason to take care of and constantly check up on her. Though they can be a little quiet -- not awkward -- with each other, Jaedeok is protective over his youngest sister because he doesn't want her to feel like she's alone or not part of the family just because she's a little different from her siblings. She sometimes sees him as a little overprotective, but doesn't really mind.

Best Friend(s):

Park Youngwon - 21 - dancer/A-Star trainee - Youngwon had been a trainee for two years before Jaedeok was, so the elder naturally took the other dancer under his wing. Youngwon, to Jaedeok, is the older-male figure that he never really had, so he really looks up to him. Youngwon is who he learned most of his contemporary/hip-hop technique from, while he sometimes helps Youngwon in making his movements smoother and cleaner. Their energy feeds from each other, so their personalities compliment each other well. While Jaedeok is reserved, Youngwon is the reason that Jaedeok actually managed to come out of his shell as a trainee and gain more confidence, so he feels that he owes a lot to him. Youngwon is still a little bitter that Jaedeok got to debut first and that he's one of Gemini's backup dancers, but he doesn't like to talk about that.

Friends & Acquaintances:

Katherine Lancaster - 19 - ballroom dancer/Jaedeok's ex-partner who he still skypes with on occasion

Zhang Tianyu - 20 - ballet dancer/Jaedeok's ex-fling with whom he swears he's on good terms

[ ♊ ]     romanticality

ual Orientation: Biual

Ideal type: Jaedeok's ideal type is someone he's comfortable with. Of course, that sounds simple, but it really isn't with him. He's never been good at words, especially verbalizing his emotions, so he's most likely to express his affection through stolen touches and small, random gifts -- he'll remember the finest of details about who he loves, from how they like their eggs to their favorite book. The person who he chooses to be with must be both intelligent and tolerant, considering that he himself is both of those. He'll want to talk with this person, like really talk, and they have to be able to challenge him, mentally. He's known for a bit of playful banter, so his partner will have to be able to handle a bit of teasing on occasion. That said, he's extremely against any kind of drama, and his partner is going to reflect that: he wants to be with someone refined and classy, a man rather than a boy. He's still the dominating one in the relationship, however, as he's usually drawn to the softer-hearted individuals that look like they could use the protection of his ridiculously toned muscles. In all honesty, Jaedeok wouldn't mind being the knight in shining armor to his precious prince or princess -- and he'll spoil them as such, making them feel like the most loved person in the world. On that note, he'll be cheeky and say that his ideal type "human" in interviews, never revealing what he really wants in a partner.

>> On a radio or television show, the MC asks Jaedeok to say a message to his father in the army. It all starts out well, with the usual "I love you; I miss you; I hope you're well" kind of thing, but he suddenly tears up when he says that "Mom and the girls are doing well, I wish you could come see all of us. I admire you so much Dad, you're so brave [...]". This could turn into a moment with his love interest back home, either as a confession or just a fluffy moment, when his uke comforts him and lets him cry his poor heart out.
