Thoughts On Fanfiction

Well lookie here: A blog that's not an application form XD Sorry for all those by the way, I've found some rather interesting apply fics lately :P

Anywho on a more serious note.

I've been wanting to share how I really feel about fanfiction for quite sometime now. Obviously I have nothing against it, being a fanfiction writer myself I think it is somewhat good practice for writing. I heard from one published author who said 'If you were really creative, you'd make up your own characters instead of ones already created' or something along those lines.

I agree and disagree with this statement. I think fanfiction can unleash your creativity and imagination, sure you are technically using characters already created...but you can tweak them a little bit. Add what ifs and what if scenarios to the story. For example: In the Harry Potter fandom I've seen quite a few fics that went with the plot 'What if Harry was a Death Eater' or 'What if Harry was evil' and tell me those aren't creative because the authors are showing you another side of Harry, a 'what if' side of him anyway.

Personally I do think fanfiction is good practice for real writing. Maybe not the best way to go, but I noticed when I write fanfiction I gradually form ideas for my own original characters and own original stories. I write original stories from time to time also besides fanfiction, fanfiction is just a fun hobby for me is all it is.

I can understand why some authors are against fanfiction such as Anne Rice, but at the same time, like JK Rowling and Stephenie Meyer I'd be flattered if someone wrote fanfiction off of my characters. I do it so it'd be hypocritical of me to tell my fans to not do things like slashing my characters together or writing non canon pairings.

Anywho on topic here: If you want to write fanfiction then write it ^^ Don't let anyone stop you from doing what you love. If writing fanfiction makes you happy and helps you express yourself, then by all means continue. Plus fanfiction can be quite difficult actually like for writing about anime or certain books to try and have the characters true to their original selves that can be a pain.

And that's it I guess. Forgive me if I rambled through this, I have a bad habit of rambling *chuckles* What are your guys's thoughts on fanfiction? How do you feel about it?

I S_pport You XD no, in all seriousness, I think you are right.. that's actually why im writing ffs... not because its like i want to make them my own, but because i really like those guys i am writing about and i want them to be heroes (something like that.... -.-) and when i think a story is cool enough, i start rewriting it, like im renaming the characters and the scenery maybe as well... and maybe publishing it in 20 years?? haha just kiddin... anyway what was I saying? I think ffs are a good way to trigger your imagination, and some really famous writers have started with writing stories about their famous characters (eg Cassandra Clare). So never stop being creative and i have the feeling that this comment is going to become longer than the post itself if i dont stop writing so... i agree with you :D

Agree!
Tbh, I started writing fanfics because there wasn't enough JooMi ones out there and I kept thinking of scenarios in my head, about me, like fantasising little things, so I just decided to use Joon and Mir as my characters and since I don't do English classes anymore, considering I didn't take it for my course, I think writing is fun, and I missed it so yh (I don't think I formed my sentences well OTL).
Plus, there are so many good authors out there who writes such AMAZING fics, and it makes you think omfg why aren't they real authors that publishes books cz they write so well.

Agreed one hundred per cent!
Also, I heard that the woman who wrote the immortal instruments series wrote Harry Potter fanfiction.
While I don't like the series, I think that it was amazing that she started off with fanfiction and now has her oen movies based off of it.
50 Shades of Gray was also based off of Twilight fanfiction. (They're as preverted as kpoppers! OTL!)I don't like that series either, though OTL

But, yes, fanfiction is a very good practice. I think I definitely improved my English grade. And, we borrow the characters, but in most fanfiction I've seen, they make it their own :)
Just as long as you don't romanise Korean in English class ;)
