"It's an infinite dream." - Writing survey

"It's an infinite dream."

i. Why did you get into writing fan fiction?

Back in 2010, I used to read Naruto fan fictions on a German fan fiction website. One story really blew my mind, and I started thinking, "Girl, you have such a wild imagination. Why not bring that to life?" I've always loved creating stories. Because I was more of the introverted type, I would always sit alone and think of plots. Okay, I'm probably exaggerating. But I still remember having filled notebooks with my ideas. I guess, I was living in a fantasy world full of miracles and dreams. Writing is such a beautiful thing. It's like a never-ending phenomena in which you will keep on dreaming until you decide to end it. It's an infinite dream. (Excuse my greasiness...) I like the feeling of escaping the harsh reality. I just like the world you build around yourself. I guess, I'm a dreamer. That's why. Aren't all writers dreamers?

ii. What would you say are your inspirations?

As cliche as it sounds, it's the world. It's my life. It's people's lives. It's the things around you. You get inspiration from everyone and everything. From conversations with friends, from small talks with strangers. You get inspiration wherever you go. For example, I found orange juice in the freezer, decided to try it and got addicted. This experience mixed with the memory of a dense guy from high school created the idea for a story. Things that might interest you can be an idea for a plot, too. Childhood memories or past conversations can be inspiring. You just need to look around you. I guess that's how writing works for me.

iii. What are the main fandoms that you write in? Why?

Infinite. Enough said. It's Infinite. Why? Because they are my favorite group.

iv. Would you consider branching out to other fandoms? Why or why not?

No. I had considered it, but it was of no avail. Because I made a deal with the devil and sold my heart to Infinite. Now, I can't love anyone else. Jokes aside, they monopolized me. I can't write about guys I hardly know. And before you ask, I do like other groups. Just not as much. I don't know their hobbies or the TV shows they had attended. For me, it's Infinite. I like writing about them. For now, it will only be Infinite.

v. Which of your fics are you proudest of/is your favorite?

Reply, First Love. It's still lacking a lot (especially the first chapters), and I still need to improve the writing, but I'm proudest of this story because I've written it for so long. I guess, it's a matter of loyalty. I guess, I'm proud of it because it reflects on my life. It tells stories of teenagers growing up. Maybe because it feels nostalgic to write about the youth. Maybe I feel too attached to the characters (which is bad). Maybe because I like my readers and our conversations too much. I just feel like it's a story that makes me proud to know that I have created it.

vi. Which of your fics do you feel is most underrated? Why do you think that is?

Thinking of my stories as being underrated is a bit... I don't necessarily think that my stories are underrated. One of them hasn't even started yet, so it's difficult to say whether it gets too little spotlight or not. On top of that, the amount of subscribers I have on that story right now is more than enough. The other story is probably rather overrated, in my opinion. I'm not sure if it's okay for the author to say that. But it's the truth. The third one has enough readers, although I feel like it should get more spotlight than the second one. Because I still have a lot in mind for the third story. The last one is the most popular story on my list. I don't think it's underrated.

vii. What is your favorite scene and/or favorite character that you’ve written?

Favorite scene would be the one in Reply, First Love in which the female lead tells her best friend about the crush she had kept in secret for three years. Which reminds me, I also feel quite attached to the scene on the basketball field where the girl has her heart beating moment with her crush. It's in Reply 7, if someone is wondering. I also remember having read comments about how this was the readers' favorite scene. At least, back then.

My favorite character... It's hard to answer. I'll just decide by the likeliness of the characters to be my friend if they were real. I think, it would be Hoya from Reply, First Love. This might also be a bit biased since I like him a lot. But in the story, he is quite a good friend to the female lead. Or maybe it should be Hana, instead. Since she matures a lot throughout the story. I guess, I'll pick Hana.

viii. What do comments and subscribers mean to you?

A lot. Really. A lot. Comments tell me how to improve and help me to keep on doing what I love. You know those times when you order ramen and you get extra dumplings? Neither do I. But what I'm saying is, comments make me extra happy. I also feel like if an author receives no comments, they will more likely abandon their story. I do think that writers should write because they love it, and not because they do it for comments and popularity. But writers also need some feedback. It's normal. That's how the relationship between readers and writers should work. Like a normal conversation. You do want someone to react to you when you talk, don't you? And it's always heartwarming whenever someone writes a long comment. Or when they post on your wall just to tell you how much they like the story. It really touches my heart. Thank you.

Subscribers are great, too. It's just a number, but still. It does make you feel better and more confident about yourself and your writing. Though, it shouldn't define you. Maybe some readers don't know it, but writers actually remember almost every single one of the commenters. Unless they change their names... But even then, they will have a hunch of who they are. Especially if they comment often.

So yeah, everyone means a lot to me.

ix. What is the hardest part of writing for you?

The beginning. Besides descriptions of sceneries and buildings, it's the beginning. I really have a hard time starting the story, for some reasons. Maybe because it's the part in which readers decide whether to read or not. It's the part where you need to impress the potential subscribers. I feel like it's the most difficult thing for me. With my latest story, I had to redo the first chapter a few times. But other than that, I feel like my descriptions of emotions and feelings are still lacking.

 x. What writing challenges have you set yourself?

To write in as many different genres as possible. I'm probably not abiding by my words, but I will. Maybe in the future. I really want to try different genres. Like supernatural, mystery, angst or fantasy. I recently had a dream about a zombie apocalypse. Wouldn't that be a great new story?

I hope to improve my writing by being here. Just like in the past where I used to write German fan fictions, I hope to improve my language. Writing a lot really does help your language skills. And one day, I hope I will be able to be proud of my writing style.

Oh wow, this was such a great interview! I felt like we were chatting over coffee (or cocoa for me, lol). Wow, and you write in German, too, that's just sooooo amazing to me. I could never write fiction in my other language, it just doesn't work for me. I totally agree with you about beginnings, they are so difficult to write, because they lay out everything, it's like that first confession to a crush, you put your heart on a sleeve and hope for the best. :) I loved this and thanks for answering!
