My thoughts about "update soon" comments (little rant):

Okay, I actually have wanted to talk about this much, much earlier, but somehow I always ended up not doing it and telling myself I'd do it soon. My opinion on "update soon" comments: well, I don't think of them highly, that is obvious, I guess. Even when I had only been a reader, I have never understood why the others wrote "update soon" instead of "thanks for the update" (<--- which I always have and still do when commenting). Intead of rushing the author or telling him/her to hurry up, wouldn't it be more appropriate to thank him/her for the update, especially after he/she used up hours to write the chapter? I mean, I know both are substance-less, but the latter shows at least grattitude. No one likes being rushed; I'm certain everyone will agree on this. And if some think that "update soon" is motivatiing, then you're unfortunately wrong. You know what's motivating? Comments filled with thoughts about the story, the characters, the plot, the pace, the writing style, language, maybe comments on a metaphor or a certain phrase used in the story. Comments that show that you, as the reader, precisely read and took it in instead of just skimming through it. Comments that show that you understood what I, as the author, have tried to get across. When I see such comments, I feel like flying and begin to grin like an idiot from happiness. But comments that only contain "update soon" or even worse "hurry up" (<--- this one actually angers me a lot) don't motivate me at all! Rather than that, you're doing the opposite. Seeing that the chapter of 3000 words I've spent three hours writing on while racking my brain to think of the scenes, find nice words while using the online dictionary for a better vocabulary and thinking about a way to phrase prettily is not worth more than the urge to tell me to update faster will more likely take away my motivation. Of course, though, I won't throw a tantrum and say that I won't update because you're telling me to (since there are many wonderful comments that make up for the rushing ones). Still, I think that I have to get across that I don't like being rushed. You could say "I'll anticipate the next update" or something that sounds less rude than "hurry up and update". I have the feeling that I come across as if I don't mind those comments. I do mind them, though. I am someone who reads all the comments and takes her time to answer to the really wonderful ones. And believe me, if you're tired and sick and spent your little free time writing a chapter, you really won't be delighted seeing that some readers still complain about the update pace and don't appreciate your hard work. Besides, I don't consider my updating speed of every second/third day as that slow considering the length of my chapters that's usually 2000-2500 (sometimes more) words.

Of course not everyone is like that (no, actually the majority leaves really nice comments) but there are still some that complain without giving me actual feedback on the chapter and that saddens me. I just hope that the "update soon" comments will be less or disappear completely.

I didn't mean offend anyone in particular, but I just wish that rather than commenting with "update soon" people would talk about the actual content of the story, because that makes authors the happiest. ;)

Thank you for reading and I hope you understand my position.

And a huuuuuge thanks to all those who leave me wonderful comments! You guys are the best. <3

I always try to tell the author how amazing they are doing but I will admit that I sometimes slip in a "please update soon!" at the end :(

I'M SORRY IF I DID THAT YOU! I shall try my best to never say that to you or any author again! :)

I'm guilty of some "update soon^^" comments in the past. But that was very rare. I mostly added some compliments as well.

Lately, I've been doing "awesome update!", "thanks for the chapter! I appreciate your hard work" "Can't wait for the next update^^ I really like this story" (okay, this one may be a little pushy...) if I can't find anything else to write. But I don't feel like I deserve the karma points if I take one of these "all-round" comments...

*screech!!!!!* aishhhhh. I've done that more than once. I never knew how bad it affects the authors. It's just that when I'm in a hurry and don't feel like writing a paragraph of what I liked (slash disliked) I just write that I can't wait to find out what happens next. So. Oops. It may not just be me, but I'll delinetly learn for next time.

I agree with you._.
i rather have silents readers that love and keep supporting my story(ies) rather than the readers who like to comment 'update soon'...
It's like, we have lives too you know-_- we're not just providing them for the update(s).
But hey, that just my opinion

I always write Thanks for the update and something about the fic itself because like you said... long comments are the ones that really motivate me..

i used to (and sometimes still do) 'thanks for the update' because 'update soon' is too...

i don't think i have ever wrote 'update soon'?

I... If not to lazy #slap, (but its true) I just coment how good they write n in the end write update soon (for a new fic)
If its chaptered fic n the author seem nice for me, I'll definitely leave a long coment... (especially if fic since i usually forget the name of the oc)

The point is, I wont just comment 'update soon'... Its rude n maybe make the author angry n not update soon... (thats what I always had in my mind...)

Really? I always write about the story and then at the end of the comment i say 'hope u update soon'! Cuz for me when my readers wrote that I would get motivated to write more! Lol I guess we all have our ways of getting motivated, but ur right, sayin a thanks is better!

I don't typically use "update soon", I use "looking forward to the next update". Is that.... Somewhat disrespectful? Because as an "author" (don't have any subbies or comments LUOL), I haven't experienced that kind of thing yet and I want to know how you feel about that kind of comment. Would that be alright? I don't want to be disrespectful to any authors..

That's true! Even me as a reader for this fanfic somewhat feel littleeeeeee irritated with those comments ._.
I know update soon can be so annoying, but sometimes I still slip that sentence in my comments if I really really dying of curiousity LOL
Btw I feel so thankful for author that read our thoughtful comment :)

but still...
