My thoughts about "update soon" comments (little rant):
Okay, I actually have wanted to talk about this much, much earlier, but somehow I always ended up not doing it and telling myself I'd do it soon. My opinion on "update soon" comments: well, I don't think of them highly, that is obvious, I guess. Even when I had only been a reader, I have never understood why the others wrote "update soon" instead of "thanks for the update" (<--- which I always have and still do when commenting). Intead of rushing the author or telling him/her to hurry up, wouldn't it be more appropriate to thank him/her for the update, especially after he/she used up hours to write the chapter? I mean, I know both are substance-less, but the latter shows at least grattitude. No one likes being rushed; I'm certain everyone will agree on this. And if some think that "update soon" is motivatiing, then you're unfortunately wrong. You know what's motivating? Comments filled with thoughts about the story, the characters, the plot, the pace, the writing style, language, maybe comments on a metaphor or a certain phrase used in the story. Comments that show that you, as the reader, precisely read and took it in instead of just skimming through it. Comments that show that you understood what I, as the author, have tried to get across. When I see such comments, I feel like flying and begin to grin like an idiot from happiness. But comments that only contain "update soon" or even worse "hurry up" (<--- this one actually angers me a lot) don't motivate me at all! Rather than that, you're doing the opposite. Seeing that the chapter of 3000 words I've spent three hours writing on while racking my brain to think of the scenes, find nice words while using the online dictionary for a better vocabulary and thinking about a way to phrase prettily is not worth more than the urge to tell me to update faster will more likely take away my motivation. Of course, though, I won't throw a tantrum and say that I won't update because you're telling me to (since there are many wonderful comments that make up for the rushing ones). Still, I think that I have to get across that I don't like being rushed. You could say "I'll anticipate the next update" or something that sounds less rude than "hurry up and update". I have the feeling that I come across as if I don't mind those comments. I do mind them, though. I am someone who reads all the comments and takes her time to answer to the really wonderful ones. And believe me, if you're tired and sick and spent your little free time writing a chapter, you really won't be delighted seeing that some readers still complain about the update pace and don't appreciate your hard work. Besides, I don't consider my updating speed of every second/third day as that slow considering the length of my chapters that's usually 2000-2500 (sometimes more) words.
Of course not everyone is like that (no, actually the majority leaves really nice comments) but there are still some that complain without giving me actual feedback on the chapter and that saddens me. I just hope that the "update soon" comments will be less or disappear completely.
I didn't mean offend anyone in particular, but I just wish that rather than commenting with "update soon" people would talk about the actual content of the story, because that makes authors the happiest. ;)
Thank you for reading and I hope you understand my position.
And a huuuuuge thanks to all those who leave me wonderful comments! You guys are the best. <3
