Ugly Thoughts

Individuality liberates a person, correct? It gives them the freedom to do all that a single human being has the innate power to do without fear of reprisal or even the apprehension of idealistically oriented rejection. If and when one crosses the river into adulthood, one should be well-prepared to step into the arms of this...state of being. Is it, by raw nature, that we have this instinct to break away and make our own homes and hearth. If so, is it so wrong to seek oneself and to make one's own decisions? To be able to know the world from one's own perspective coupled with the opinions of others -- compare? Is it such a heinous crime to defend one's dogma?

Or are we doomed to the shadows of tradition and hearsay, only afforded the privilege of being on the outside looking in? Are we condemned to forever lay upon the cold earth as the stepping stones of our earthly masters? Are we, their spawn, only the empty vassals in which they will outlive their own lives and fulfill their dreams? Slaves to their every whim which completely disregards our individuality?

To look at these shackles, manacles welded together and see beyond the iron bars what could have been had these chains been lengthened if only by a few links...

Is this bleak existence really all there is to live for?

"There are two way to be a slave: one is when you are in a prision and you see the iron bars... the second is when you live your life according to the society's rules, and convince yourself to be free..." ~David Icke

Thinking profoundly, just as you do, can be draining and sometimes takes away one's will to live...! So at times, I need to remind myself that all is not as bleak as it may seem <3

Can we not, to a certain extent, shape our own destinies?
We are, pehaps, bound to the earth and its failings by physical body. Our parents, even in their weaknesses, play a part in shaping who we are and this may or may not be a good thing.
But is it not all the more satisfying to emerge from this transitional stage with a sense of self, when many battles have had to be fought in order to gain this sense of identity?
Is there not duality in everything? Is not everything a paradox? Does not liberty present its own constrictions, when ideologically imposed upon a society of fallible beings, in which we are all inevitably included?
There are certainly many aspects of tradition than can be illogical, seemingly groundless and even, if I might put it bluntly, disgusting. "Giving life to a child" or "doing God's will" certainly seems like a feeble, if not repulsive justification for bowing to the all too human desires of immortality and familial comfort.
But that is only one, of many ways, to look at something.
Find your own definition of these things. Find your own principles and defend them. We are only bound by things such as human definition and tradition if we never try to overcome them.
I highly recommend that you read the book "The Quiet American" by Graham Greene, if you get the chance. It addresses the issues of belief, of tradition and of searching for oneself, although maybe never finding a definite answer.
Perhaps the meaning of life is that we are always trying to define it. Through trial and experience, failure and victorious findings, are we not all living?
