Maybe it's a problem happened between them and lead to this or if u want to take it from another way maybe she saw him hug his buddy or something and she said that because she was jealous because she LOVES him ! And u said they were together since 28 years ago (just like my parents ) and at this situation problems always appear not to get them apart but to bring them together more , to show how they love each other ! Don't take it personally or anything like that but you should understand that this things always appear ! From god to test us and test our love for each other ! And I'm sure ur mom didn't mean it but maybe she was just angry or jealous like I said !
