Chosen role: well he'd be more involved in the freak show plotline, but he's not a freak... so round and round I guess. the mechanic/engineer. because it's character-building, a job that hard, which is something he needs. but he thinks he has that job because he's manly. twerp.

Clothing style:

 

for some reason I feel like this kind of style makes sense for when he's on the job. casual would just be more like the pictures I used above. t-shirts and mundanity.

Background: He always wanted to be a part of something different. The mundanity of his average, easy life was suffocating, so as soon as he turned 18, he left home to join the carnival, abandoning his given name for the psuedonym "Kai." He had no real ties to it before joining, and he cut all his former ties after joining.

*What about family? Do you have any? What happened to them, and where are they now?

• Completely average, wholesome, traditional family. Mom and Dad, a younger sibling or two, maybe even a dog. He doesn't like to talk about them though, just because he finds his past boring and irrelevant and nobody wants to hear about a privileged kid abandoning a perfect life to join the carnival, a place you'd expect the desperate to run to when there's no where else to go and they don't belong anywhere. He ran from a place where he belonged to a place where he doesn't at all.

Personality: He's infatuated with all things abnormal, constantly frequenting the freak show tent, even though he will never be a part of them. He is the epitome of average, which is somewhat of an anomaly in the carnival line of work, but he's often overlooked, and some even think he's strange, in a creepy awkward albeit harmless sort of way. He also has a problem with authority, which is how he got assigned to working as a mechanic under the head engineer, who was tough enough to handle him. He scorns all things "right," which is why he has authority issues and also why he's so fascinated by the freaks. He loves anything that goes against the norm and what he was brought up to value and believe.

What do you value in life? abnormality, anti-tradition, the unorthodox, and doing things for oneself instead of for others

 

Hobbies:

• people-watching (he likes to sit in the background and observe and analyze people); making weird things (sculptures or gadgets or inventions) out of ordinary and thrown out objects; sulking around the freak show tent.

• Pubescent stage of life: His first crush was really creeped out by him because he would leave her random mementos of herself, but they were all really distorted images of her so she told her parents and he was threatened by her father. This made him withdraw from being social and he just became a complete loner and didn't reach out to anyone else after that.

Platonic relationships:

Which of the other 6 carnies are you close to? The head engineer; a fellow mechanic (daughter of head engineer?); a game booth guy, same age as him and the female mechanic.

*Why/How? What do you guys do together? S/he's like a mentor figure and taught him how to fix equipment in resourceful ways, even though Kai's kind of rebellious against him/her because of anti-authority. He and the mechanic/engineer all work on the equipment together. He and the female mechanic and the game booth guy all just kind of hang out and get up to shenanigans, usually suggested by game booth guy.

Which of the other 6 carnies do you dislike? The fortune teller

*Why/How? What happened? He doesn't like the idea of someone knowing too much about him when he'd prefer to be invisible

*Any other acquaintances? not really since he's such a loner. but the ticket vendor would be somewhat of an acquaintance, since they're both people-watchers. she might see him around and throw a comment or two his way, something that made him kind of uneasy because it means he was noticed (fear of being found).

Passionate relationships: 

Love interest 1: okay I'm honestly indifferent as to who this is, but it's one of the freaks. he's so ing infatuated. a female freak.

Personality: A bit timid, but definitely one of the more deformed, with one of the most notable abnormalities. She notices him creeping around the tent, but she doesn't really approach him, and when he occasionally approaches her for small talk or maybe he gives her one of his weird sculptures or something, she kind of just looks at him strangely and accepts it without saying anything. She doesn't really understand why he hangs around so much.

Love interest 2: A male freak whose deformity is a more topical thing, like snake skin or cat eyes or something that doesn't really change his body shape.

Personality: Because he's less deformed, he's more outgoing and confident. He actually notices Kai hanging around the tent and approaches him first, which kind of intimidates Kai a little bit, but he's also strangely happy about being included.

*Love interest 3: A fellow mechanic, most likely female.

*Personality: Stubborn and headstrong and independent, she's pretty annoyed with Kai and his inability to follow authority and his unorthodox way of doing his job. But she comes to find him endearing and even starts to like him, which is kind of a tragically hopeless endeavour, with how much he prefers freaks over normal people. Maybe game booth guy likes her.

*Rival: If anything, the rival would be the same as the second love interest. If not, then game booth guy.

*Personality and appearance: 

*Why is he/she your rival? Perhaps they're both romantically interested/involved with the first love interest, and maybe love interest 2 is totally playing Kai or something. idk... As for game booth guy, well he likes female mechanic and is jealous that she likes Kai, so he sees Kai as a rival more than Kai would see him as one. Kai's pretty oblivious to that triangle that's happening in his little friend circle.

Behaviour:

How do you act around people you like as a friend? Totally normal, kinda cheeky and laid back. Around people he's comfortable with, he's not quite so weird. He still has his unorthodox habits though and his weird tendencies. He smiles and laughs and all that. Although he is relatively quiet compared to most people, so they assume he's shy.

How do you act around people you don't like? He's completely cold and quiet, and he doesn't want to interact with them. He isn't cocky around them, he just keeps his distance and hates them from afar. Barely talks when they're around.

How do you act around a crush? ing weird. He doesn't talk a whole lot, and when he does he's saying weird stuff, probably about them or maybe about his odd hobby with the sculptures. He kind of just...creeps for the most part.

Habits:

• He has that habit of running his fingers through his hair, it's a completely nervous habit. When he's angry, he sulks and doesn't talk and just kinda... glares. He isn't bored much at the carnival, since he left his boring life behind, but when he was bored way back in his past, he also just brooded and dwelled on how boring everything was and how much he wanted to get out. He was very much in his head then. Still is. He wouldn't want anyone to see him when he's sad. Way too vulnerable. He has this way of distancing himself from people emotionally. Even when he has a crush on someone, it's more of an infatuation than anything else, he won't open up to anyone and he's emotionally inept. When he's happy and comfortable, he acts totally normal. Pretty much around those he considers a friend, so fellow mechanics and whatnot. Around them, he's deceptively normal.

*Anything I've missed? I'll be honest, I don't see any of his romantic plotlines working out. He doesn't live happily ever after with anyone because he is emotionally and socially inept and doesn't know how to connect with anyone at the level. I kind of like the idea of there being some sort of ending scene with fellow people-watcher, the ticket vendor, where they're just kinda sitting together silently and few words are exchanged but they're like seen as kindred spirits or something.

*Suggestions/Thoughts: I was really indifferent about what characters you'd use for his relationships because I want it to be moldable with your story and whoever else applies, if that makes sense... I hope that's okay :)
