My Theory on f(x)
So, I was roaming around tumblr when I saw this one post about f(x). Basically saying that we should get SM to make f(x) more famous by voting on MAMA. Now, I agree on the whole voting thing. I already voted along with SuJu, but I can't help to wonder. Why is it that SM never invested much to f(x)?
Well, my theory goes like this.
First of all, the girls are practically busy. Until this year, Sulli and Krystal were both still busy with school. And of course next year Krystal is going to Uni, while Sulli focuses on her career. Then Luna, she is in uni and she is attending classes. The two people that are not as busy are Amber and Victoria. Amber doesn't go to uni either, so she is practically free. That's why I think SME decided to put her on IY2. Victoria is from China so she probably has to go back and forth once in a while. And SME would probably let her to prevent another fiasco happening like what happened to Han Geng. So yeah, Victoria became busy in China.
Basically speaking, all the girls are busy with their own personal life or career to do anything together. Thus, it will be hard for SME to make more albums or songs for them.
But the problem is their schedule doesn't mix. I don't know what marketing strategy SME is trying to pull, but I think they are going for the sequence appearance. As in one member on screen after the other. First Victoria (with IY and WGM), then Krystal (with HK3), next is Amber (IY2), Luna (IS2), and last Sulli (TTBY). But the problem is, since they are a small group, they can't really do much when one member is not present. Based on their on-screen appearance, after one member finished her activity, the other member will follow, and followed by another one. Not making any chance to create an album.
If you look at SHINee, the members rarely have individual activity, different from SuJu or SNSD. Individual appearance works best with large groups, since missing one or two people doesn't really do much difference with the choreography or lyrics distribution.
And then I though, do I really want everything to change? I mean, think about it.
This year f(x) only released 2 MV (ES and HS Japanese). They don't have concert, they don't have repackage album, they don't have a TV show. They are just that. They also haven't got a fanclub name. Like seriously, really SME? Forever NAMELESS here!
But set that aside, I keep thinking, do I really want all those thing happen to these girls? Yes they are less popular, but then they seems more free compare to other artists. They get to do what they want. They get to go to uni without much trouble and more frequent, they can go back to their hometown more frequent, spending time with their families and going on vacation, venturing to something that they actually want to do.
I mean look at Amber. Trolling, derping with us fans, going to Taiwan, LA, everywhere. She still has works, she collaborate with SuJu on SS4, and collaborate with Stephanie from CSJH, but she is free. She gets to rest.
And then Luna. We don't see Luna that often other than from IS2. But that's because she went to uni and wanted to focus on her studies. If she was heck busy she won't even have time to go to a lecture.
Krystal said that she wanted to go to uni and study. If she is dead busy, she won't even have time to apply. She also get a chance to go back to San Fransisco. She looks healthier. The last time Krystal over worked herself she fainted on stage. I don't think any of us wants that to happen again.
And Sulli was an actress, so I'm guessing her calling first and foremost is acting. She got to star on her own drama. It didn't do well, but at least she gets to do what she wanted to do.
And Victoria. She is from China, so it's just normal for her to prefer activities back home. She filmed a drama in China, and also did charity. And she just had a vacation few weeks ago.
They are doing the things they want to do, not the company wants them to do. They are doing things their own way, not the company way. They are just being them, not being a robot controlled by the company.
Well, that's what I thought anyway.
Other than those, I have another theory. Which is the timeline.
My theory is that successful groups in SME reach their peaks around 3 to 4 years after they debuted.
Now think about it.
SuJu. Debuted in 2005, plus Kyuhyun in 2006. SuJu became very successful during Sorry Sorry era, which is around 2008 to 2009, continued to 2010 with Bonamana.
And then SNSD. They debuted in 2007. Gee was a big hit in 2009, but they didn't get international coverage and being basically plastered every where until around 2011, with The Boys and international success.
SHINee. They debuted in 2008. This year and last year, they basically had no rest. Japanese debut, then tours, Sherlock, Dazzling Girl, endorsement. They are busy. Like seriously.
And TVXQ. They debuted in 2003. TVXQ's success is something different compare to other. They already popular since 2005, but then with the whole Japanese debut they basically had to start off from scratch. Their success in Japan was around 2008 to 2009 with Purple Line, and after that Mirotic hit.
Following the pattern, hopefully next year will f(x)'s time to shine. And hopefully SME can give them a chance to shine and give us a fanclub name. Let's just pray SME doesn't mess this up and waste a whole bunch of amazing talents.
